Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Granite is a tough hardy rock known for its strength. Which Scottish coastal city, known for its bleak weather and its hardy souls, is nicknamed the "Granite City"?

Answer: Aberdeen

Aberdeen is the third biggest city in Scotland behind Glasgow and Edinburgh. This city, with around 200,000 people, earned its nickname because of the large amounts of granite that were quarried in the area. This granite has been used in the Houses of Parliament in London, Waterloo Bridge, and the Firth of Forth Bridge. Aberdeen is also known as the "Silver City" as the granite used extensively in building construction in the city has a high mica content and hence, buildings made from granite tend to sparkle.
2. The Granite was a concept vehicle, a compact crossover SUV, developed by which US manufacturer that also produced the Yukon SUV?

Answer: GMC

This vehicle was first shown to the public in 2010 and should it have gone into production it would have been GMC's smallest crossover SUV. It would also have been the first of its class to have rear hinged doors. It was powered by a 1.4 L (85 cu in) EcoTec turbocharged I4 engine and supported by a dual clutch, six speed transmission.
3. "Topaz" is a Cold War suspense novel by which author better known for his 1959 novel "Exodus"?

Answer: Leon Uris

Chiefs from both NATO and French intelligence agencies uncover plans by the Soviet Union to ship nuclear weapons to Cuba; however, when they report their findings, no-one seems to want act upon it. The novel, published in 1967, would top the New York Times' Best Seller list and it would be Uris' first novel since "Exodus" to achieve that feat.

The book was adapted to film by Alfred Hitchcock but it would prove to be one of the suspense master's few critical and commercial failures.
4. What gem found in granite is also the name of a city in a book by L. Frank Baum?

Answer: Emerald City

The Emerald City of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is found at the end of the Yellow Brick Road. In fact, only the walls are green, and the rest of the city is described as no greener than any other city. That problem is overcome by the green-tinted glasses people are given to wear, enhancing the brilliance of the city.
5. Which television drama series featured James Garner playing a private investigator?

Answer: The Rockford Files

The series was created by Roy Huggins and Stephen J. Cannell. Huggins had had great success by using Garner in his series "Maverick" during the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was anxious to recover some of that magic by pitching Garner as Brett Maverick, the modern detective. Rockford has been released from prison after serving five years for a crime he didn't commit, lives in a trailer, wears low budget clothing and is trying to get his life back on track. Garner's usual charm shines like a beacon in this series and the show, which ran from 1974 to 1980, proved to be an NBC success story.
6. Over 95% of precious opal is mined in Australia. Which Australian national sporting team is known as the Opals?

Answer: National Women's Basketball team

The Australian Women's Basketball team is one of Australia's most successful national sporting teams. It won the Olympic silver medal, almost beating the USA, in the 2000 Olympic final in Sydney. In 2005 it won the World Championship in Brazil. Frequently Australian women enter the US highest levels of competition.
The National Women's Netball, Soccer and Cycling team are the Diamonds, the Matildas and the Cyclones respectively.
7. "Boulder Dash" is a video game that was released in 1984 for the Atari 8 bit computer system. Can you 'garner' your wits about you to identify who the game's main protagonist is?

Answer: Rockford

Rockford's mission is to channel his way through a series of caves to reach an exit. Along the way he has to collect a range of precious stones and fight off a number of dastardly creatures, rock slides and obstacles. Oh, did I mention... he has a time limit just to make things awkward.

The game, original for Atari, has spawned many sequels and has has since been adapted for a much larger array of platforms.
8. Cary Grant became Gary Granite on which Hanna Barbera cartoon of the 1960s?

Answer: The Flintstones

Cary Grant, unlike some other famous actors of the time, didn't actually voice his cartoon doppelganger. This was done by Bob Hopkins. Other famous stars who voiced own characters were Ann Margrock (Ann Margaret); Stony Curtis (Tony Curtis) and Rock Hudstone (Rock Hudson).
9. What stone's name comes from the Middle English term for 'dark red'?

Answer: Garnet

The garnet generally occurs in granite pegmatite and is usually red. It is thought that the Middle English term in turn came from the Latin for 'red seeds', perhaps a reference to pomegranate. Garnet is also an obsolete Imperial Russian measure of dry volume, and is used in several places in the USA as a place name.
10. What anagram of the word 'granite' is a major city in Morocco?

Answer: Tangier

Tangier is just over 25km from Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar, and the city is a gateway for Europeans wishing to visit Africa. The city is famous for the Kasbah, mint tea at the Café Hafa and markets crowded with merchandise from the region. The city itself is built on a limestone hill, and is an important trade connection with the rest of Africa.
