Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. LITERATURE: which Anglo-Indian author created Shere Khan, a terrifying tiger with a fear of fire?

Answer: Rudyard Kipling

The tiger Shere Khan is one of the bad guys of Rudyard Kipling's 'Jungle Book' stories. He has a damaged leg, and is hated and feared by all except Tabaqui, his jackal sidekick. He becomes obsessed with Mowgli, the 'man cub', in 'Mowgli's Brothers' after he tries and fails to hunt Mowgli's parents, and Mowgli strays into the jungle and is adopted by Akela and his wolf pack. Local villagers in 'Tiger! Tiger!' believe that Shere Khan is an injured moneylender reincarnated, and there is a massive price on his head.

He is afraid of fire, which he calls the 'red flower', after Mowgli chases him away with a burning branch. While he is burned to death in the Disney movie, in the books, he is trampled to death by a herd of buffalo. He was voiced by George Sanders in the 1967 Disney animated film, and Idris Elba in the 2016 live action/CGI film.
2. MOVIE: the 2012 film 'Life of Pi', based on the book by Yann Martell, featured a Bengal tiger called Richard Parker. Who directed the film?

Answer: Ang Lee

'The Life of Pi' stars Suraj Sharma as Piscine Molitor Patel, or 'Pi' for short, who finds himself stranded in a lifeboat with a tiger called Richard Parker. Pi's parents own a zoo and Richard Parker is one of the animals there, whom Pi befriends, to his father's disgust.

The family and their animals travel to Canada but the ship is lost in a storm, with only Pi and a few animals - Richard Parker, a hyena, a zebra and an orangutan - surviving, although the other animals kill each other. It is uncertain how true Pi's story is and both the book and film leave it ambiguous.

The film won Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.
3. MUSIC: which Welsh rock band released the album 'Send Away the Tigers' in 2007?

Answer: Manic Street Preachers

'Send Away the Tigers' is the eighth studio album by the Manic Street Preachers and was released in the UK in May 2007. Four singles were released from the album: 'Underdogs', 'Your Love Alone Is Not Enough' (a duet with Cardigans singer Nina Persson), 'Autumnsong' and 'Indian Summer'.

The title is a reference to a quote by comedian Tony Hancock, a metaphor of using alcohol as a way of coping with personal demons. 'Send Away the Tigers' peaked at Number Two on the UK Album Chart.
4. PEOPLE: which zookeeper and collector of exotic pets was the subject of the 2020 Netflix documentary 'Tiger King'?

Answer: Joseph Maldonado-Passage aka Joe Exotic

'Tiger King' kept many Netflix viewers entertained during the coronavirus pandemic of 2020. It is a true crime documentary about the big cat collector community. The main focus of the series is on the feud between Joe Exotic, owner of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park, and Carole Baskin, owner of Big Cat Rescue, a Florida-based animal sanctuary.

The Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park mainly housed tigers, ligers and tigons, cougars and other big cats, and was criticised by PETA, Baskin and the Humane Society of the United States for the conditions in which the animals were kept, and Exotic's sideshows where he would allow people to pet tiger cubs. Exotic was arrested and received a prison sentence for trying to have Baskin murdered, and Baskin was subsequently granted control of the park in 2020.
5. RELIGION: in Hinduism, many deities are depicted riding on certain animals. Which Hindu war goddess is often depicted riding on a tiger?

Answer: Durga

Durga is a Hindu goddess of war and strength, who fights against evil and those that would threaten peace, and carries many weapons in her multiple hands. In Vaishnava Hinduism, she is an aspect of the goddess Lakshmi, wife of Vishnu. She is often depicted slaying Mahishasura, a buffalo demon who, according to one legend asked the god Brahma to ensure that only a woman could kill him, as he believed women were weak.

The gods responded to him going on a murderous rampage by creating Durga and arming her, and she slaughtered him.

Her mount is a tiger called Gdon (Dawon in Tibet), who is sometimes depicted as a lion or a lion/tiger hybrid, and who was given to her as a reward. Durga's festival, Durga Puja, is celebrated in September or October (in the Hindu month of Ashwin).
6. SCI/TECH: which company released the OS X Tiger operating system in 2005?

Answer: Apple

Several of the operating systems in Apple's OS X series are named after felids: the series also includes the Jaguar, Panther, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion operating systems. The Tiger is version 10.4 of the OS X system and included the Spotlight search system, the Dashboard feature, a Zoom screen magnifier function and an updated version of the Safari browser. Developer's releases were leaked by BitTorrent users a few months before the official release, and Apple responded accordingly with lawsuits. Apple itself was on the receiving end of one from TigerDirect, an online computer retailer who claimed Apple had ripped off its trademark. Both companies settled in 2006.
7. SPORT: which English football team, previously managed by Marco Silva and Steve Bruce, are nicknamed the Tigers because of their orange and black kit?

Answer: Hull City

Hull City, also known as Hull City Tigers, were formed in 1904 and play at the KCOM Stadium, where they moved from their old ground of Boothferry Park in 2002. Their name comes from their orange and black kit and their club badge is a tiger's head. They were promoted to the Premier League for the first time in their history in 2008 under Phil Brown, and again under former Manchester United defender Steve Bruce in 2016.

After Bruce's resignation and a cycle of managers including Marco Silva, Nigel Adkins and Leonid Slutsky, the club were relegated into the Championship and then into League One after a disastrous 2019-2020 season which included an 8-0 thrashing by Wigan Athletic.

A move to change the club's name to Hull Tigers by owner Assem Allam in 2013 was roundly rejected by fans.
8. TELEVISION: which '80s cartoon featured the character Tygra?

Answer: Thundercats

If you're a child of the '80s like me, you may well have grown up watching 'Thundercats', a cartoon about a group of cat-like humanoid aliens: Lion-O, Tygra, Panthro, Cheetara, twins WilyKit and WilyKat, and Snarf, a red whiskered creature and the series' comic relief. Three further Thunderians, Bengali (based on a white Bengal tiger), Lynx-O and Pumyra joined the cast in the second series.

The gang regularly did battle with Mumm-Ra, an evil priest who resembled an Egyptian mummy, and his minions. Tygra was an architect and a scientist, the second-in-command of the group and the quietest, and fought with a whip.

He also had the power to manipulate people's minds.
9. VIDEO GAMES: which character in the 'Street Fighter' fighting game series is a one-eyed Muay Thai practitioner whose signature move is the Tiger Uppercut?

Answer: Sagat

Although most gamers may have originally encountered Sagat in 'Street Fighter II', he actually made his debut in the first 'Street Fighter' game, along with series icons Ryu and Ken, where he is the final boss. He is a tall Muy Thai fighter who wears an eyepatch and has a massive scar on his chest, courtesy of Ryu.

Although he joins up with M Bison (known as Vega in Japan) in 'Street Fighter II', seeking revenge, he later becomes one of the good guys (much to the disdain of his rival and fellow Muay Thai practitioner Adon).

He is one of the CPU-controlled bosses in 'Street Fighter II' and the last before Bison, and is associated with tigers; his signature moves are Tiger Uppercut and Tiger Cannon, and he has a pet tiger in later games. In 'Street Fighter IV', he even has a downloadable tiger costume.
10. WORLD: which 'gr-r-reat' breakfast cereal has a mascot called Tony the Tiger?

Answer: Frosties/Frosted Flakes

Frosties, known as Frosted Flakes in the USA, are sugar-coated cornflakes made by Kellogg's and were first brought onto the American market in 1952 as Sugar Frosted Flakes, although the 'sugar' part was later dropped. Mascot Tony the Tiger has appeared on the front of Frosties boxes since the cereal's creation and was voiced for several decades by Thurl Ravenscroft in Frosties adverts, and Tom Hill after Ravenscroft's death.

He was created by Eugene Kolkey and Edward Kern for a breakfast cereal mascot contest and named after Tony Wells, a colleague of theirs at advertising agency Leo Burnett.

In the 1970s, he was given a family, including a son, Tony Junior, who had his own breakfast cereal. In 2017, Kelloggs announced that it would be cutting the sugar content of Frosties to combat obesity in children.
