Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why is Francie jealous of Ruey?

Answer: She wants to be Margot Maynard's best friend, and sees Ruey as an obstacle.

Francie is a moody teenager with a troubled home life. Her mother died when she was a baby and her father remarried, only to die in a yachting accident later on. Francie's stepmother then married an old friend and although he tried to be kind, Francie behaved so badly that her stepparents sent her away to boarding school. Emerence Hope, Margot's best friend, has returned to Australia and Francie hopes that she can replace Emerence, only to find that the Maynards have Ruey with them all the time and that Margot and Ruey seem to be close (justified as Ruey is their adopted sister). Francie gets jealous and makes digs at Ruey while the triplets and their friends are chatting.
2. Ruey is a big fan of lacrosse, and the other girls explain that they used to play it at the Chalet School, but gave it up. What is the reason for this?

Answer: Mary-Lou got injured and there weren't enough people to make up teams.

Ruey mentions that she played lacrosse in a private club at home and Margot and the others explain that they used to play it but gave up when Mary-Lou injured her head, as she had to miss games and they didn't have enough girls to make up a team. Con Maynard corners Gwen Parry, the Games Prefect, and asks her about bringing it back. Gwen and her classmates discuss the subject on a walk, and Gwen later proposes bringing back lacrosse at the prefects' meeting. Jessica Wayne seconds the motion and Josette Russell, the Head Girl, and Gwen ask Miss Annersley about it. Miss Annersley agrees to discuss it with the staff, on condition that Miss Burnett is willing to help with training and that enough girls are willing to play, as they need to make up at least two teams. Luckily, some of the younger teachers have also played lacrosse and are willing to help coach as well.
3. The school's two new chapels are due for dedication and Miss Dene assigns various jobs to the girls to prepare the chapels accordingly. What is Ruey's job in the Protestant chapel?

Answer: Polishing the altar rails

The chapels were built as part of the school's coming-of-age celebration, and various families and Old Girls have chipped in to pay for various parts, such as windows (Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson), seating (Cornelia Flower and Evadne Lannis) and altars (the Russells and the Maynards). Ruey polishes the brass rails in St Mary's, the Protestant chapel, along with Ricki Fry, while Rosamund Lilley - a gardening enthusiast - arranges the flowers and Sue Mason sweeps and polishes the floor.

In Our Lady of the Snows, the Maynard triplets polish the giant candlesticks, while Giulia di Ricci - the niece of Luigia di Ferrara, an Old Girl who became a nun and died in a Nazi concentration camp - arranges the flowers and Miss Wilson fills the sanctuary lamp. Giulia says that she wishes her aunt had lived to see the chapel, and Miss Wilson replies that Luigia and many other 'unseen worshippers' will be with them in spirit.

The chapel also has a statue of St Clare in Luigia's memory, as she was a member of the Order of St Clare.

The Bishop of Minchampton, whose daughters are former pupils, conducts the Protestant dedication service while Bishop Mensch, Frieda von Ahlen's uncle, conducts the Catholic one.
4. What happens to Ruey during a maths class?

Answer: She injures her finger.

Miss Wilmot is taking Ruey's form for maths and is not pleased when she finds Francie and Primrose Trevoase having an argument, and most of the other girls joining in. She is even less pleased when she discovers that very few of the girls have prepared the theorem they were set for homework, and insists on them coming back - with the exception of Margot and two others - so she can take them through it until she is satisfied that they know what they are doing. Ruey sits up straight and accidentally knocks over her ruler and inkwell, and as she tries to grab them, she catches her finger in the desk top and bends it back. Miss Wilmot takes Ruey to Matron, who bandages the finger and promises to warn the other teachers, but she is distracted when Gretchen von Ahlen is sick from eating too many chocolates and forgets.

This causes a problem for Ruey when Miss Moore tells her off in geography for not working, and tells Margot to be quiet when Margot tries to explain. The pain eventually causes Ruey to faint.
5. Miss Annersley calls a staff meeting to announce that the school is going to have a new uniform, and that Madge Russell has sent over a few sketches of potential uniforms. Which description best fits the new uniform that the staff pick?

Answer: A blue dress with a white revers and crimson honeycombing at the shoulders and waist.

Joey Maynard drops hints by saying that Madge wants them to choose something both pretty and practical. Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson explain the reason for the meeting and Miss Wilson adds that they want to teach the girls about style, while Miss Annersley adds that gymslips are going out of fashion.

The younger girls wear gymslips while the older ones wear skirts and blouses, and the colour scheme for the Swiss branch is gentian blue and crimson, while the English branch have stuck with brown and flame.

The dress with the white revers and honeycombing is picked as the final choice, though the girls will not be wearing it until the next Christmas term. They also discuss the lacrosse and decide to bring it back, and Miss Wilson even manages to put together a staff team.

The girls later have a lacrosse match with mixed teams comprised of Chalet School and St Mildred's girls, as it is felt that putting St Mildred's against the Chalet School would be unfair.
6. What pudding are Ruey's form making in domestic science class?

Answer: Apple strudel

Frau Mieders takes the girls for domestic science and they start off by learning how to make polishes, before progressing onto a cookery class where they learn how to make appel strudel. As anyone who has ever cooked or eaten it knows, it's a tricky recipe with very fine pastry, and Frau Mieders is very strict about getting the pastry to the right thickness and texture. Ruey takes off her bandage while cooking, meaning that she can only use her left hand. Margot accidentally spills flour when the lid comes off a dodgy flour sifter and several girls get covered in flour. Frau Mieders overhears Margot commenting about Ruey's bandage while the girls are making pastry, and insists on bandaging Ruey's finger again and making her sit out while she takes over Ruey's pastry.
7. Which Old Girl gets married during half-term?

Answer: Peggy Bettany

Peggy Bettany is getting married to Giles Winterton, brother of Polly and Lala, and Josette, her sister Ailie, Maeve Bettany, Ruey and the Maynards all attend. On the way to the wedding, Joey bumps into her old friend Evadne Lannis, who is pregnant, in Paris and introduces her to her new twins, Geoff and Phil. Ruey gets a welcome surprise when her brothers Roddy and Roger also show up at the wedding, as Dick Bettany has written to their High Master to ask if they can come. Though Ruey doesn't know this, Joey has spoken to Sir Edgar Watson, Evadne's husband, about Professor Richardson's planned space flight and Sir Edgar thinks it is essentially a suicide mission.
8. What happens to Ruey, Francie, Con and Margot when their form go on a walk?

Answer: They nearly get hit by an ambulance and have to jump into a ditch and a hedge.

Francie wants to walk with Margot, but Margot has already promised Ruey a walk, so Francie makes do with Genevieve, a French girl who speaks very little English. When the girls are allowed to go off on their own, Francie joins the Maynards and Ruey, and notices that they are all talking about something - as it happens, they're talking about Professor Richardson's plans, as Ruey hasn't heard anything, but they don't want Francie knowing as it is private. Francie is insulted and makes a snooty comment about Ruey, and an argument breaks out.

The girls are standing in the middle of a road and an ambulance comes round the bend; Francie and Ruey jump into a roadside ditch and are soaked, while the Maynards fall into a thorn bush. Dr Graves, who is in the ambulance with a patient, is not impressed and takes them back to school, where the matrons look after them and Miss Annersley tells them off and warns them that they will be kicked out of the play if they misbehave again. Margot writes a long letter to Emerence about it, adding that Francie is in a foul mood and has been hanging around her all term, and she can't understand why. Both girls go into the library and make a huge point of ignoring each other. Ruey apologies to Francie, but Francie continues to be unfriendly, and Len wonders if Joey can help.
9. What role does Francie play in the school play?

Answer: The cruel matron of a children's home

Joey has written this year's Christmas play, about a rich girl - played by Margot - who meets some poor children from a children's home and learns about their horrible lives, and begs their parents to give the poor children a big Christmas party and try and make the home a better place. Francie plays the matron of the home and complains because her part is a horrible old woman who moans all the time, though - as Margot thinks - it's perfect for Francie. Miss Ferrars is producing the play and gets annoyed with Margot and Francie for their poor acting in rehearsals. During break, Ruey gets a letter from Roger saying that Professor Richardson is going into space in December and that there is a chance he won't come back, and is so shaken by it that Margot goes to Freudesheim to get Joey. Joey comes to the school and consoles Ruey, and offers to let her come home for the weekend, but Ruey says no as she wants to go to the staff evening. Joey privately thinks that Professor Richardson might be a genius, but is insane for abandoning his children.
10. As part of the staff evening, the girls have to make costumes out of bundles of crepe paper and prizes will be awarded for the best ones. What does Ruey dress up as?

Answer: Robin Hood

Ruey gets crepe paper in two shades of green and goes for Robin Hood, complete with a hat with a feather in. Margot has pink and white paper and is the daisy; Francie has blue and white paper and dresses up as a sailor, and wins a prize because Mlle de Lachenais is impressed with her collar; and Josette, who also wins a prize, is a Georgian lady in a pink and lilac dress with panniers stuffed with handkerchiefs.

Other outfits include a mandarin (Ricki), a nurse (Connie Winter), a Native American chief (Len), a poppy (Con), an Irish colleen (Clare Kennedy), a Breton fishergirl (Lisette Falence) and a crocus (Maeve Bettany).

The winners get vouchers for the new uniform, which is modelled by three of the younger mistresses. The girls play a series of games, including Subject and Object, and Miss Wilmot pairs Francie and Ruey and sends them out to decide what to pick. Both girls are awkward at first, but Ruey asks Francie why she hates her and Francie tells her the truth. Ruey explains that she isn't Margot's best friend and that Margot misses Emerence.

They choose to be Saint Nicholas (Francie) and the chimneys he went down (Ruey). The girls later have a talk in the gym and Francie gets over her bad mood, and returns home much happier. At the end of term, Joey gets Ruey alone and tells her that Professor Richardson has taken off and no-one has heard anything since. Ruey is upset, but knows that she has the Maynards and her brothers, and the Rosomons as well, so she won't be alone.
