Chicken, Boar, Monkey and Tiger are the female fighters. Boar makes a point of arriving late, in keeping with the legend of the Chinese zodiac race, and is the point of view character in the first episode until she is killed by Rabbit. Her real name is Toshiko and her father is the previous Zodiac War winner.

Her younger sister Kiyoko (older sister in the light novel) was going to be the original Boar for this Zodiac War, due to her willingness to kill animals, but she was less willing to kill humans and Toshiko goaded her into becoming increasingly violent, until Kiyoko eventually snapped and cut her own throat with a knife given to her by Toshiko. Boar wields two machine guns in battle.

Answer: She grabs hold of his head and kills him.

Dog works in a kindergarten, where he secretly acts as a scout for a mercenary organisation and provides them with potential child soldiers. He adopts one of the girls in his care after rescuing her from a paedophile and works to provide for her. In the Zodiac War, he teams up with Chicken, thinking she will be easy to fool and that he will be able to use her as a weapon, and bites her to inject her with the 'One-Man Army' drug. Chicken pretends to be naive about the potential effects of the drug and kills Dog with her newfound strength by crushing his skull.

It is later revealed that Chicken is insane due to a combination of an abusive childhood and being groomed by the Niwa family into becoming an assassin, and has a habit of betraying her allies.

She sets a flock of birds on Boar's reanimated corpse and plots to kill Monkey, but ends up telling her useful information instead. She is then killed by Ox, who stabs her in the eyes.

Answer: Rabbit

Snake has the ability to feel vibrations in the ground, as well as a flamethrower. He is distracted when he senses Monkey moving explosives around and tries to warn Dragon, but Rabbit decapitates him before the tournament even starts. Rabbit has the ability to control the corpses of his victims, who he considers his 'friends', and uses Snake's severed head as a camera to spy on potential victims and prevent them from sneaking up on him (as Monkey tries to do), which is how he is able to kill Boar and later Monkey as well.

He also uses Snake's body to lure other fighters out of the sewers.

Answer: Resolving conflicts by talking to people

Monkey is a diplomat and one of the kinder fighters, who uses her power to resolve conflicts by talking to the parties involved. She also has the ability to manipulate solids, liquids and gases, which she uses to destroy the floor of the building where the Zodiac War begins in order to stop Sheep attacking.

In a flashback, it is shown that she has a boyfriend and that she trained under three wise monkeys. Her power backfires on her when she resolves a conflict between two warring countries by suggesting that frontline fighters desert and form their own nation, only for the two countries to team up and kill the deserters.

She tries to attack Rabbit from behind as she realises she cannot reason with him, only for Rabbit to reach out behind him and stab her, as he can see her through Snake's eyes.

He then uses his necromancy powers to reanimate her body.

Answer: Explosives

Sheep, the oldest of the contestants, is a mercenary and a previous Zodiac War winner who specialises in explosives. The previous war in which he fought was on a space station, and he won by placing explosives around the station and detonating the explosives while escaping in a pod.

He started out as an arms dealer, but ended up getting involved in combat due to his knowledge of explosives. His granddaughter was originally selected as the Fighter of the Sheep for the present Zodiac War, but he volunteered to take her place.

He meets his end at the claws of Tiger, who he assumes to be a useless drunkard and weaker than the likes of Horse, Boar and Dog (two of whom are dead by this point). However, he finds out the hard way that Tiger is at her strongest when drunk, when she rips him apart with her nails.

Answer: Suffocation

Despite being one of the bigger and more intimidating fighters, Horse is actually timid and shy. A former soldier, he got into bodybuilding and willingly participated in various medical experiments, which gave him the ability to strengthen his body - which he calls Stirrup - and mutating cells which protect him from poison and other injuries, making him immune to the poison in the jewels the fighters are all made to swallow at the beginning.

After losing a fight against Ox, Horse becomes demoralised and locks himself in a bank vault.

However, Rabbit detects that Rat - who Horse briefly encounters - is in the area and uses Snake's headless body sets the bank on fire with his flamethrower and Horse suffocates to death when the oxygen in the vault runs out.

Answer: Dragon and Snake

Dragon and Snake are twin brothers who wear similar outfits and carry tanks on their backs with tubes attached: Snake, the younger twin, has a flamethrower while Dragon's tank contains liquid nitrogen. They are greedy, amoral mercenaries who enjoy playing both sides of a conflict and throwing around money with little care for the consequences (such as when they drop money from a plane over a poor village and the villagers fight over it, a reference to the Dragon in the original story making it rain). Their flashback shows that Dragon was hired for a pharmaceutical company who experimented on children, while Snake was working for a gang who kidnapped children for the experiments. The brothers ended up betraying both sides.

Dragon can fly and spends most of the Zodiac War in the air. He is killed by Rabbit when Monkey throws Snake's severed head at him, followed by Rabbit, who cuts him in half and reanimates his body. When both brothers are eventually frozen with Dragon's nitrogen and killed by Tiger, their bodies shatter into pieces and nobody can tell whose body is whose.

Answer: He kills himself

Rabbit is the only character who has no flashbacks or backstory, and is also the most insane, unpredictable and downright dangerous fighter, despite his silly appearance (imagine a male Playboy Bunny). He carries two swords, March Hare and White RabbitHe kills five fighters (four directly, one via Snake) and comes very close to killing two more. Ox and Tiger try to kill him, but he beats them to it by biting his tongue, effectively using his own power on himself. Ox and Tiger dismember him, but the pieces of his body still move and his body reforms into a misshapen mass with Monkey hidden inside.

His wish is to be friends with everyone in the world, but due to Rabbit's twisted idea of what friendship means, it would involve killing everyone in the world and making them into his zombie slaves.

Answer: He rescued her during a conflict.

Tiger is a former martial arts student turned mercenary, who turned to alcohol to cope in war situations and stop her questioning her own actions, and developed an animalistic fighting style where she fights on all fours like a real tiger. She was kicked out of her dojo because of it.

A man saves her during a conflict, thinking that she is a civilian, and she strives to be like him after he tells her that he always does the right thing. This man is Ox and she volunteers to participate in the Zodiac War in the hope that she might meet him again.

She does not admit that she recognises him. (Ox also recognises her, but keeps quiet.) She is fatally wounded by Rabbit while protecting Ox from him, and Ox kills her to prevent Rabbit from reanimating her corpse. Ox is then attacked by Monkey and Rabbit and tries to kill himself by biting off his tongue, but Monkey prevents him from doing this by breaking his teeth.

Answer: The ability to see 100 scenarios and pick the best one

Rat meets Duedecuple, the manager of the tournament, who offers him an 'optional' winner's interview. Rat refuses and as he leaves the building, he is shot dead. The scene then rewinds and replays again and again, with different outcomes, and it is revealed that Rat has to do the interview in order to survive, and that he has the Hundred Paths of Nezumi-San, the ability to see a hundred different scenarios and choose one.

As a result, he is able to win without fighting, as he knows what the other fighters will do, and largely stays out of the conflict.

This is also why he sleeps so much in class, because he is exhausted from all that mental activity, not to mention his memories of trauma and horror from the different worlds. In one world, he is eaten by Chicken's birds, while in another, he befriends Rabbit.

He discovers what all the wishes of the different fighters are. When he himself has to pick a wish, he is overwhelmed by choices and the possible negative outcomes of each, and decides that he ultimately just wants to live a normal life.
