Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Widely regarded as one of the worst sci-fi movies of the 1950s, 'The Beginning of the End' tells the story of giant radioactive creatures attacking Chicago. What sort of critters were they?

Answer: Locusts

Peter Graves starred, and probably wishes he didn't, as the movie was vilified by critics. The storyline was ridiculous, the special effects were almost childish and the acting was very overplayed.

The picture is of an actual locust plague in Australia.
2. 'The End' was a Beatles recording from 1969. What claim to fame does it hold?

Answer: Last song recorded by the group

A rather fitting ending for the band, it was recorded as the last full track on the 'Abbey Road' album. It also features a drum solo from Ringo, a quite unusual occurrence.

Yoko did not sing on any of the Beatles albums, and the song title is not the shortest- 'Girl' only has four letters, as does 'Help'.

The final words of the song are well known to Beatles fans, and quite deep and meaningful.
'And in the end the love you take
Is equal to the love you make'.

I like this picture- it is street art found in Milan, Italy.
3. 'The Restaurant at the End of the Universe' was the second book in the 'Hitchhiker' series, written by Douglas Adams. What was the name of the restaurant?

Answer: Milliways

It does not matter where in the space-time continuum you come from, Milliways will accommodate you. Every evening, you could dine in the huge restaurant and watch the universe vanish into non-existence.

"Don't Panic" were the words of advice that Earthman, Arthur Dent, received from Ford Prefect, the experienced space traveller and correspondent for the encyclopaedia of the future, 'The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy'.
4. According to legend, what is found at the end of a rainbow?

Answer: Pot of gold

The pot of gold comes from Irish folklore, and is the hiding place used by its owners, the leprechauns, or 'wee folk'. Rumour has it that you can never find the treasure, because it is impossible to reach the end of a rainbow.

Ritchie Blackmore made his name with English heavy rock band, Deep Purple, before forming his own band, Rainbow, in 1975. I was lucky enough to see them in concert shortly afterwards.

Biblically, the rainbow represents God's promise to never flood the earth again.
5. This is a survey map of Land's End, the extreme south-western point of mainland Britain. There have been many instances of people travelling from Land's End to the opposite extremity of the British Isles. It is located in north-east Scotland, but what is its name?

Answer: John o' Groats

Land's End is in Cornwall, and John O'Groats is about 1,400 kilometres away, in Caithness County. In 1985, champion cricketer, Ian Botham, walked the route for charity, and it is regularly used by cyclists as a test of endurance. Personally, I would rather drive!

The three wrong answers are the southern, northern and eastern extremities of mainland Australia.
6. The Tour de France is the most prestigious cycling race in the world, and lasts about three weeks. The starting point of the tour is not fixed, and indeed, has not even been in France on many occasions, but the end is always in the same place. What is the name of the famous Parisian location where the final stage of the Tour is won?

Answer: Avenue des Champs-Elysees

The riders come past the Louvre, turn onto the Champs Elysee, and do a loop round the Arc de Triomphe, before racing to the finish line, situated near Avenue Dutuit.

The start of the race has been held in various countries, such as Belgium, Switzerland, Spain and even Ireland!

Saint Laurent Boulevard is not in Paris- it is one of the major streets in Montreal. The Rue Morgue was part of the title of the Edgar Allan Poe mystery and is not actually a Parisian street, either. Île de la Cité is an island in the Seine and home to the historic Notre Dame cathedral.
7. In 2012, it was predicted that the world would end (again!). This prediction was based on the item shown in the picture, but what is it?

Answer: A Mayan calendar

The world was supposed to end on 21 December 2012, at 11:11 UTC. It didn't happen...
8. 'All's Well That Ends Well' is one of Shakespeare's comedy plays, written about 1605. Which of these is NOT a major character in the play?

Answer: Katherina Minola

One of the Bard's comedy/love stories, it tells the tale of Helena, a Spanish 'gentlewoman' who is in love with the playboy, Bertram. He considers her of too lowly status and sets her a supposedly impossible task after they were forced to marry by the King. Helena and her mum weave a complicated web, and Bertram is impressed and mends his wicked ways. All's well that ends well, eh?

Katherina Minola is the 'shrew' in another of Shakespeare's comedies, 'The Taming of the Shrew'.
9. Which genteel sport is divided into 'ends'? It is generally played by countries in the British Commonwealth.

Answer: Lawn bowls

In this photo, there are several orange bowls (bowls, NEVER call them balls!) out of shot, but the team using black would win this end. The object is to get closer to the 'jack', the small white target ball, than your opponent.

An 'end' would be equivalent to an 'inning' in baseball, but the number of ends played would be determined before the game. 18- or 21-end games are the usual.
10. This letter is at the end of the Greek alphabet. What is it called?

Answer: Omega

As with many Greek letter, the symbol is used in mathematics and the sciences. It is the metric unit for electrical resistance, and is even found in the Bible. It is pronounced with a long 'O' sound.

It also represents the end of my quiz!
