Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The name of this quiz ("This is the End") comes from the first (and other) line(s) in a famous song by which of the following groups?

Answer: The Doors

The song "The End" was released in early 1967 on the album "The Doors"-and, fittingly, it was the last track on the album. There are a number of interpretations of the meaning of the song. Jim Morrison said at one point that it was written about a breakup with a girlfriend, but he also gave it an Oedipal interpretation, and there are some who connect it with death.

The Doors performed the song at the end of what turned out to be their last live performance together in December of 1970.
2. What "end" word or phrase is suggested by the Mobius strip in the photo?

Answer: Endless

A Mobius strip has no beginning and no end. It's endless.
3. What phrase denotes the condition of someone who has completely lost control?

Answer: They've gone off the deep end.

The phrase "go off the deep end" has been in existence since at least the 1920s and, according to the Online Etymology Dictionary, it very likely originated as a reference to being in the deep end of a swimming pool where one can no longer find a footing.
4. Using the photo, can you complete this phrase? The light at the end of the ______"

Answer: Tunnel

Tunnels often seem dark, scary, and hopeless. Seeing the light at the end of a tunnel, whether literally or figuratively, lifts the heart and raises the spirit, providing a sense of relief.
5. One of Agatha Christie's later works of crime fiction, which does NOT feature any of her recurring detective figures, is "Endless _____". What word belongs in the blank?

Answer: Night

"Endless Night" was published in 1967. The book did not include any of Ms. Christie's often-featured detective types as a character, but a later television adaptation of the novel brought Miss Marple into the story.
6. If you saw a "leath bhrogan", you would likely be at the end of what?

Answer: A rainbow

"Leath bhrogan" is the Irish term for "shoemaker", which, according to legend, is what leprechauns are. Leprechauns are associated with the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
7. What is a classic hair nightmare known as?

Answer: Split ends

Split ends can result from a number of conditions that stress one's hair-overuse of "product", poor nutrition, too much sun exposure, and styling practices like teasing. Although there have been a number of remedies marketed to correct the condition, the most foolproof way to eliminate split ends is to cut them off.
8. Who was the female star of the 1981 movie "Endless Love"?

Answer: Brooke Shields

"Endless Love", released in 1981, was Shields' third movie role having to do with sexuality at a very tender age. It followed her roles as the child prostitute Violet in the movie "Pretty Baby" in 1978, and as Emmeline, a young girl marooned on a deserted tropical island with her cousin in "The Blue Lagoon" in 1980.

In "Endless Love" Shields played Jade, the female half of a teenaged couple who falls in love; their parents disapprove and try to prevent the relationship. Shields' character in the movie is 15, and she played the role when she herself was 15, although it was first released shortly after her sixteenth birthday.

The photograph is of a brook.
9. Which of the following is a position in US football?

Answer: Tight end

Of the four choices listed, the tight end is the only position that exists in American (or indeed in any other kind of) football. The tight end is an offensive position that plays on the front line, next to the players responsible for tackling members of the opposing team.

A tight end can assist the line in defending the quarterback, but is also an eligible receiver, meaning he can catch passes or receive handoffs of the ball and move it down the field.
10. What American author, who also penned the novel "White Fang", wrote a short story entitled "The End of the Story"?

Answer: Jack London

"The End of the Story" is a tale of a doctor's toils to save the life of his ex-wife's lover-the fee for which is that she leave her lover and return to the doctor as his wife. Although not generally hailed as one of London's best efforts, it is entertaining and has a nice twist at its end.

The photograph is of the London Bridge, which has been transplanted to the state of Arizona in the US.
