Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Reportedly taken from Seychelles and brought to General Robert Clive of the British East India Company sometime around 1750, Adwaita spent the last years of his life in Kolkata, India. He finally passed away in 2006, over 250 years in age. What kind of animal was Adwaita?

Answer: tortoise

Adwaita was a Aldabra giant tortoise and weighed a whopping 550 lbs. During his last days, his shell developed a crack and he eventually died of liver failure. Zookeepers declared that they would keep a preserved version of his shell on display for visitors who ventured to the Alipore Zoological Gardens.
2. José Díaz-Balart, whose aunt just happened to be Fidel Castro's first wife, is a Cuban-American broadcaster who has worked for what American television network?

Answer: Telemundo

José Díaz-Balart has won two Emmys for his work in journalism. Two of his brothers are involved in U.S. politics, becoming members of the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida.
3. As pronounced in the language of its country, which of the following cities is both the site of a Winter Olympics as well as known for a famous burial shroud?

Answer: Torino

The 2006 Winter Olympics were hosted by the Italian city which is also known as Turin in English as well as the native Piedmontese language of the city. The Shroud of Turin is rumored to be the burial shroud of Jesus, and his image appears on it. However, most archaeologists refute its legitimacy.
4. In medicine, which of the following terms describes a solution that contains the alcoholic extracts of plant or animal matter?

Answer: tincture

A tincture is typically alcoholic, though sometimes other solvents are used and labeled as tinctures. This form of serving the medicine in alcohol was once much more popular as the ethanol in the tincture allowed some materials to more thoroughly dissolve. The alcohol also acted as a preservative in many cases.
5. Appearing with their band name in Hollywood sign-style letters, which System of a Down album gets its name from the term meaning "the degree in which something could possibly be damaging to an organism"?

Answer: Toxicity

The metal album came out in 2001, a week before the September 11 attacks, and some lyrics from the song "Toxicity" (which talk about the "toxicity of our city") were oddly seen as being prescient. The artists claim it is purely coincidental.
6. The five mother sauces of traditional French cuisine include béchamel (from milk), velouté (a light sauce made from stock), espagnole (a dark sauce made from stock), hollandaise (from egg yolk), and what other classic sauce?

Answer: Tomate (from tomatoes)

The idea of mother sauces was first envisioned by the French chef Marie-Antoine Carême, perhaps one of the most famous French chefs of all time and the leading proponent of "haute cuisine", food prepared artistically as well as flavorfully.
7. The name of what spunky character from the teen-sitcom "Boy Meets World" has Native American origins?

Answer: Topanga

Some sources claim that Topanga means "a place above" or simply "above" as it shares its name with a canyon in California. The character from "Boy Meets World" was given such an unusual name likely because she was being portrayed as a quirky hippie girl.
8. A familiar idea in science fiction literature and film, the concept of converting the atmosphere and living conditions of another planet, moon, or inhabitable body to those favorable to human beings is commonly referred to as what?

Answer: Terraforming

The idea of possibly changing other worlds to be inhabitable is hypothetical at this moment, but there is evidence to suggest it could be possible. Terraforming may be a necessary step if humanity wishes to leave the cradle of Earth and move to other planets, though some science fiction paints the concept as aggressive, ethnocentric and possibly dangerous to alien life.
9. In Greek mythology, which of the following pairs is the name of Odysseus' son (which in Greek means "far from war") and the city where Odysseus fought and which his son was indeed far from?

Answer: Telemachus - Troy

Though Telemachus was far from war, he was not an effete figure. Indeed, after years of trying to discover who his father was as a man, the two created a plan to slay the suitors that had been plaguing his mother Penelope with marriage offers. The father and son then went on a bloody killing spree after Odysseus revealed himself in Ithaca.
10. A question dealing with the ultimate "T" is a must! Which of the following words would NOT be considered a synonym for "trivial"?

Answer: tremendous

While fans might think trivia is great, the word "trivial" means "insignificant" or "unimportant". How unfortunate! Why, trivia ought to be considered a tremendous endeavor!
