Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1869, the Northern Pacific Railroad sent Samuel Wilkeson west to inspect the company's proposed rail route from Minnesota to Washington Territory.

Answer: True

Samuel Wilkeson was sent to simply check out a feasible route, but became overwhelmed by the majesty of the western forests. He submitted reports on the vast potential for wealth that the western forests held in store for the United States.
2. What are the three mountain ranges that comprise the Pacific Slope forest range?

Answer: Coast, Cascade, and Sierra Nevada

These three mountain ranges are spread over 1200 miles from Canada down to California and contain the majority of the giant forests of the west.
3. Which of the following trees is found only in the state of California, naturally?

Answer: Giant Sequoia

The Western Hemlock is found in Oregon, California, Washington, Idaho, and Montana. The Fort Orford Cedar is found in Oregon and California. The Coast Redwood is found in Oregon and California.
4. Who is credited with discovery of the Douglas Fir?

Answer: Archibald Menzies

Archibald Menzies discovered the Douglas fir in 1791. However, the tree is named for David Douglas who did the definitive study on it in 1825.
5. Which of the following is a member of the "deciduous" family of trees?

Answer: Elm

The Elm tree is the only one listed that is not a part of the "conifer" species of trees.
6. Logger's Lingo. What is meant by the term "Woodsman's bed roll or pack"?

Answer: Bindle

A bucker is a lumberjack who trimmed and sawed felled trees into more manageable lengths. It's obvious what the single and two man saws are. Of course, the two man saw was mostly used to cut through the logs when they were at their thickest.
7. Logger's Lingo. What is meant by "second and final cut" in felling a tree?

Answer: Back Cut

Highballing is speeding up the logging operation. Peeler is a woodsman who stripped off the bark. Snipe is to shape or bevel the front end of a log.
8. Logger's Lingo. What is a log that lodged in a river or stream in such a way that it caused a jam during a log drive?

Answer: Key Log

Dog is a short metal spike pointed at one end and with an eye or ring at the other. Boom is a raft of logs in the water. Timber Beast is a wry nickname for anyone who worked in the woods.
9. This man owned the sawmill in California where gold was discovered in 1848.

Answer: John Sutter

John Sutter had already earned a reputation as one of California's more enterprising businessmen when he reached a fateful decision in 1847 to erect a sawmill and make his mark in lumber. However he was never destined to see any profit from his precious wood. On the morning of January 24, 1848, James Marshall, his partner, discovered gold in the millrace and the rush was on. Sutter's farm hands and laborers threw down their tools and dashed to the millsite to pan gold. Sutter's land was over run by gold seekers and he ended up selling his interest in the land in 1850 for $40,000.
10. In 1875 a San Francisco newspaper heralded these two men as the "lumber kings of the Pacific Coast".

Answer: William Talbot and Andrew Pope

William Talbot and Andrew Pope were heralded as the "lumber kings" just 22 years after erecting their first mill on Puget Sound. Sharing unheralded in the huge profits was Cyrus Walker, who had become a partner in 1863.
