1. What was the name of Bertie Wooster's manservant?

Answer: Jeeves

Reginald Jeeves is a very intelligent man, far more clever than his master. Many of the stories which were written by P.G. Wodehouse, are centred around some scrape that Bertie Wooster has got into, and how Jeeves saves the day. A television series was made based on the books, with Jeeves played by Steven Fry and Bertie by Hugh Laurie.
2. Who was the rather frightening housekeeper in Daphne du Maurier's novel 'Rebecca'?

Answer: Mrs Danvers

A new young wife arrives in Manderley, a mansion in Cornwall. She feels very much in the shadow of the former wife, Rebecca. There is a large portrait of Rebecca in the house and she was very beautiful. Mrs Danvers the housekeeper adored her and takes every opportunity to undermine the confidence of the new mistress of the house.
3. Which 'Downton Abbey' servant shared his name with an American gangster who was depicted by Warren Beatty in a movie with Faye Dunaway?

Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker were a violent pair of gangsters who toured the central United States during the great depression robbing small grocery stores and petrol stations. They were more well known for their bank robberies although they were less frequent, and became glamourised despite the despicable acts they perpetrated. They were portrayed in a movie by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway.

Thomas Barrow in 'Downton Abbey' was a footman who was promoted to butler in the last series. At the beginning he was a bit of a villain, colluding with Lady Cora's personal maid O'Brien to stir up trouble, but by the end he is the lovable friend of the children carrying them for rides on his back.
4. In 'Upstairs Downstairs' which servant was played by Jean Marsh?

Answer: Rose

Jean Marsh, together with Eileen Atkins who did not have a part in the series, came up with the idea for 'Upstairs Downstairs'. It portrayed the life of the wealthy family who live upstairs and that of the servants who live downstairs, with equal importance being given to them both. Rose was a maid who had been in service with this family all her life.

She was a faithful, responsible hard working woman.
5. In the American comedy 'Soap' a very sarcastic butler worked for the Tate family. Later he starred in a spin off show of his own. What was the butler's name?

Answer: Benson

'Soap' was a breakthrough comedy send up of the television soap operas of the time. Benson the sarcastic butler was played by Robert Guillaume, and he also starred in the spin off show which was simply called 'Benson'.
6. What did Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret call their governess when they were children?

Answer: Crawfie

Marion Crawford was governess to Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. In 1950 she published a book called 'The Little Princesses' about her time with them. After this none of the royal family ever spoke to her again.
7. Lady Constance Chatterley had a love affair with one of her husband's servants. What was his job?

Answer: Game Keeper

'Lady Chatterley's Lover' concerns a young woman whose husband returns from the war in a wheelchair. He engages a nurse and his wife feels alienated from him and seeks solace in the arms of game keeper Oliver Mellors. The book was written by English writer D.H. Lawrence and was first printed in 1928 in Italy.

It was not published in full in the United Kingdom until 1960, when Penguin Books faced a trial under the obscene publications act.
8. What service did 'The Master of the stool' perform for the king?

Answer: He helped with the king's toileting and ablutions.

The master of the stool also known as the groom of the stool was a very influential and sought after position. He would be closer to the king than anyone else because of the intimate nature of the service he performed. The first Earl of Holland was the groom of the stool for King Charles I of England.
9. Which nanny arrives flying on her umbrella?

Answer: Mary Poppins

'Mary Poppins' was a series of fantasy books for children written by British author P.L. Travis. The first one was published in 1934. In 1964 Disney released a movie based on the books starring Julie Andrews as Mary. The cast also included Dick van Dyke as Bert the chimney sweep whose dreadful attempt at an English accent has become a well-known joke.
10. Sancho Panza's master was a bit of a handful. Who was he?

Answer: Don Quixote

Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes wrote the book 'Don Quixote' in two parts, the first of which was published in 1605 and the second in 1615. Don Quixote is an elderly gentleman who has read too many books on chivalry and has gone mad. He makes Sancho Panza his squire and wanders the countryside looking for maidens to rescue and tilting at windmills with his lance.
