Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Serbian superstar tennis player has been given the nickname "Joker" due to his antics and very accurate impressions of other tennis players off the court?

Answer: Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic was discovered by Yugoslavian tennis coach Jelena Genčić who also discovered former champions like Goran Ivanisević and Monica Seles. After turning professional in 2003, he made his first Grand Slam final in the U.S. Open in 2007 where he lost to Roger Federer.

His first Grand Slam final victory came the following year in the Australian Open against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Between 2008 and 2016 he won twelve Grand Slams and has won each of the four Grand Slams at least once. Djokovic is well known for doing impressions of a number of tennis players such as Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova and John McEnroe in front of crowds during various tournaments.

His "Joker" nickname is well earned.
2. In the Steve Miller Band's 1973 song "The Joker", what name do some people call him "Cause I speak of the pompatus of love"?

Answer: Maurice

"The Joker" is the title track from the album of the same name written and recorded by the Steve Miller Band in 1973. It went to number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Almost two decades later, in 1990, it was re-released after being used in a Levi Strauss commercial and rocketed to number one on the UK Singles chart.

The first three lines of the song make reference to some of Miller's own songs. "Some people call me the space cowboy, yeah" references Miller's song "Space Cowboy" from his 1969 album "Brave New World", "some call me the gangster of love" references his song "Gangster of Love" from his 1968 album "Sailor" and "some people call me Maurice" refers to the song "Enter Maurice" from the 1972 album "Recall the Beginning... A Journey from Eden".

The origin of the word "pompatus" came from Miller apparently mishearing the word "puppetutes" (paper doll fantasy figure) used in the lyrics to "The Letter" by The Medallions and substituting it with "pompatus".
3. Which "people's" motor vehicle manufacturer produced three different motor vehicle variants named Joker?

Answer: Volkswagen

Volkswagen, which translates to "people's car", is a German automobile manufacturer founded in 1937. Adolf Hitler himself ordered the production of a basic family car which would be affordable and available to the citizens of the Third Reich. As of 2016, VW was the leading auto mobile manufacturer worldwide based on sales and certainly the VW Beetle is one of the most recognisable vehicles around. Volkswagen produced the VW Air-cooled Westfalia Joker T25 / T3 Camper in 1979, VW Golf Variant 1.4 Joker Estate and the VW Golf Mk3 Joker (Special Edition) manufactured in the 1990s.
4. Written by Gustav Hasford, The "Short-Timers" was published in 1979 and follows U.S. Marine James T. "Joker" Davis through his recruit training and subsequent deployment to Vietnam. Which 1987 Stanley Kubrick film was this novel adapted for?

Answer: Full Metal Jacket

Gustav Hasford wrote "Short-Timers" in 1979 and the sequel "The Phantom Blooper: A Novel of Vietnam" in 1990. There would have been a third to complete the trilogy, but died before he could finish his "Vietnam Trilogy". Stanley Kubrick, together with Hasford and Michael Herr adapted the novel for the 1987 film starring Matthew Modine as Private Joker, Adam Baldwin as Animal Mother and Vincent D'Onofrio as Private Pyle.

It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1988, but lost out to the film "The Last Emperor".
5. The Joker is not a roller coaster for the faint of heart. Over 1000 feet long, riders scoot along at close to 40 mph and are subjected to backward, forward flips and 4D free spin where each row of seats spin independently. Which chain of amusement parks feature The Joker exclusively as one of their rides?

Answer: Six Flags

The Joker roller coaster was originally known as "Total Mayhem". It was renamed in honour of the Batman villain the Joker a year after its unveiling in 2015. The Six Flags amusement parks have the Joker installed in a number of their parks namely Six Flags Great Adventure (New Jersey), Six Flags Over Texas, Six Flags New England and Six Flags Great America (Illinois).

The 4D free spin feature makes the ride extra interesting creating inversions as well as 360 degree rotations. It was developed by S&S Worldwide, first installed in 2015 at Six Flags Fiesta Texas on 'Batman: The Ride'.

It has subsequently been installed on rides all over the world.
6. The "Batman" villain, the Joker has been portrayed a number of times on screen, most notably by Heath Ledger in "The Dark Knight" (2008) which earned him an Oscar. Which actor was the very first to portray him on screen in 1966?

Answer: Cesar Romero

"Batman", the television series based on the DC comic books, was filmed in 1960s. It starred Adam West in the titular role and Cesar Romero as the villainous Joker, the very first to appear on screen. The first film adaptation featuring the Joker, was Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton's 1989 film "Batman".

Cesar Romero had a prodigious career which included over a hundred films from his first film "The Shadow Laughs" in 1933 to his final film in 1998, "The Right Way". He starred in sixty-seven different television series over a forty year span. His version of the Joker was included on TV Guide's list of "The 60 Nastiest Villains of All Time".
7. There have been many incarnations of the Joker in the DC Comics universe since his first appearance in 1940 in "Batman#1", but which event led to his facial disfigurement, green hair and homicidal insanity?

Answer: Fell into a vat of chemical waste

There is some controversy as to who actually came up with the concept for the Joker at DC Comics, but collectively Bill Finger, Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson created one of the most interesting super-villains. There were two inspirations for the character, one being a Joker playing card and the other was a photograph of Conrad Veight from the film "The Man Who Laughs" (1928).

The Joker was initially supposed to be killed off after his second appearance in "Batman#1", but was saved by the editor. There have been a few different alternatives surrounding the origin of the Joker. One origin story suggests that as a masked criminal "Red Hood" he fell into a vat of chemical waste while trying to flee Batman.

After his subsequent disfigurement he transformed himself into the Joker.
8. "Byblia ilithia" is an insect commonly called the 'joker' or 'spotted joker' and is found in Asia and Africa. What kind of insect is it?

Answer: Butterfly

The joker is a beautiful orange, white and brown butterfly although the white bands are generally found on the underside of the wings. When the wings are open, there is a patterned contrast between the dark brown and tawny orange colour with white dots all around the edge of the wings. It has a wingspan of approximately 50mm and they are attracted to rotting fruit. It is a weak flyer and generally flies close to the ground. As mentioned in the question, they are found in parts of Africa, including Madagascar, as well as in India and Sri Lanka.
9. The Joker playing card seems quite standard to us now, but was not always the case. It was first created during the American Civil War to be used in which card game?

Answer: Euchre

There are generally two jokers added to every standard deck of fifty-two cards. The joker card was originally created for the card game Euchre as a trump card. The first illustrated joker, first known as the "Best Bower" or "Imperial Bower" was printed in 1863 by Samuel Hart.

After that joker cards started appearing, mostly with a jester or clown theme. The name 'joker' is said to have developed from the word 'jucker' which is how the name of the game was spelled in original German. Today, the joker card is used in a wild variety of card games and is generally used as a wild card.
10. Created in the 1970s, the U.S. trivia game show, "The Joker's Wild" has been presented in the past by the likes of Jack Barry, Jim Peck and Pat Finn. Which unlikely rap icon, became the game show's host in 2017?

Answer: Snoop Dogg

The show was the first to be produced by Jack Barry after the quiz show scandals in which he was implicated in the 1950s. Billed as "the game where knowledge is king and lady luck is queen", "The Joker's Wild" has contestants pulling a lever on a slot machine to receive question categories.

There is a monetary value to each correctly answered question which is added to the contestant's total prize money. A joker, as with playing cards, can represent any category. If multiple jokers come up, the prize value of the question can be increased.

A version of the game called "Joker! Joker!! Joker!!!" , specially designed for children, premiered in 1979. With the 2017 reboot of the show, Snoop Dogg was chosen as host. The show has spawned board games, a mobile game and video slot machines based on the original format.
