Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cadbury's chocolates have been popular world-wide since 1938. Cadbury's Roses are one of their most popular lines. From where did the name Roses come?

Answer: From the Rose Brothers, whose machines wrapped the chocolates in 1824

Cadbury's, started in 1824 by Quaker John Cadbury, is now owned as a subsidiary by Kraft Foods. John Cadbury had a long history of philanthropy. His treatment of employees and benefits to the community were not only uncommon for the times but based soundly on Quaker principles that all should live in peace, comfort and harmony.

He created the Bourneville model village near Birmingham, UK; it was named after the river Bourn. It gave people decent, warm and safe housing and later the Cadbury family opened hospitals, holiday homes and schools as well as donating land for recreational parks. The well-being and welfare of the people always came before profits.

2. In the 1962 movie "Cape Fear" Robert Mitchum played ex-con Max Cady and Gregory Peck played lawyer Sam Bowden. In the 1991 remake Robert Di Niro played ex-con Max Cady but who played lawyer Sam Bowden?

Answer: Nick Nolte

The 1991 remake of the 1962 movie "Cape Fear" starred Robert Di Niro as ex-con Max Cady and Nick Nolte as lawyer Sam Bowden.

Also in the movie were three actors from the 1962 original: Gregory Peck (Sam Bowden in 1962 and Lee Heller in 1991), Robert Mitchum (Max Cady in 1962 and Lt. Elgart in 1991) and Martin Balsam (Mark Dutton in 1962 and a judge in 1991).

Some actors will go to extremes for a movie role. Nick Nolte is taller than Robert De Niro, so for the movie Nolte lost weight and De Niro developed muscles. Di Niro also paid $5,000 to have his teeth ground down to make his character more menacing. After the movie it cost him $20,000 to have his teeth restored.

3. The back of her head has been licked countless times but who, with an almost mechanical-sounding name, was responsible for the design of the iconic profile of Queen Elizabeth II which has appeared on British postage stamps since 1967?

Answer: A. Machin

The Machin head is part of a series of stamps designed by Arnold Machin in 1967. While Britain has seen so many changes since 1967, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary's profile on British stamps has remained a constant and all proposals to change or update the image have been quashed by Her Majesty herself.

Children's favourite Ivor the Engine's 50th anniversary was marked by his appearance on a series of stamps in 2009 whilst Ivor V. Enjyn, Eza D Veiss (He's a device) and Yama Motaka (I am a motorcar) are spurious creations.

6. It is said that cottages in Leicestershire, UK, were purposely built with small windows, to be countermeasures against what creature?

Answer: Black Annis

Windows, it is said, were built small so that Black Annis could only get a single arm inside. She is imagined as a blue-faced hag or witch with iron claws and a taste for human flesh (especially children). She is said to live in a cave and haunt the countryside of Leicestershire, UK.

Just like many superstitions around the world, parents used her as a warning to their children, that Black Annis would get them if they did not behave. The other three answers are also witches of English Folklore, but unlike Annis who ventured out for her prey, they were linked to water like a river, pond, or lake.

9. Who was the first Queen Regnant of England and Ireland?

Answer: Mary I

A queen regnant is a ruling monarch in her own right. A queen consort is the wife of a ruling king. A queen regent is the guardian of a child monarch who rules until the child comes of age. There were de facto Queens before Mary, (Matilda & Lady Jane Grey) but they were never crowned.

Mary I, also known as Bloody Mary, was the daughter of King Henry VIII. Her mother was Henry's first wife, Catherine of Aragon. She became known as Bloody Mary as a result of her persecution and executing of many Protestants in her attempt to change England back to a primarily Catholic country. She had no children. She reigned from 1553-1558.

Elizabeth I was also a daughter of King Henry VIII, by his second wife Anne Boleyn, making her Mary's half sister. She never married and was known as the Virgin Queen, a name which was honored by Sir Walter Raleigh when he named his new colony Virginia. She reigned from 1558-1603.

Anne was the daughter of King James II. She became queen after the deaths of her sister Mary II and her husband King William III. She was married to Prince William Duke of Gloucester. Although she had 17 pregnancies, no children survived thus ending the reign of the line of Stuart. She reigned from 1702-1707.

Victoria was the daughter of Edward, the fourth son of King George III. She became queen because none of her uncles had any legitimate children. The British Empire doubled in size during her reign. She married her cousin, Albert of Saxe-Coburg and they had nine children. She reigned for 63 years and 7 months, the longest of any British monarch until Queen Elizabeth II passed that in 2015. She reigned from 1837-1901.

10. Not the first of his ilk but instantly recognisable to many, which of the following is the alter-ego of Fernville Lord Digby?

Answer: The Dulux Dog

Over the years, 14 different Old English Sheepdogs have portrayed the Dulux Dog with Fernville Lord Digby being the second. He successfully beat out the competition of 450 dogs to win the honour of replacing the original face of Dulux Paint, Shepton Daphnis Horsa or just "Dash" to his friends, after his retirement in 1969.

Fernville Lord Digby was not only the Dulux Dog from 1969 until the early 1980s but also played dogs both named "Digby" in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" (1972) and, more famously in "Digby, the Biggest Dog in the World" (1973). As befitting any major movie star, Digby had stunt doubles and a chauffeur-driven limousine. He passed away in March 2013 after a brain haemorrhage.

The first female Dulux Dog was Tanya Jedforest Magic Flute in 1986 followed by Dreamweaver Lorien's Lament or "Pickle" as she was known affectionately.

The name "Dulux" is made from the beginnings of "Durability" and "Luxury", everything you want in a pot of paint!

Cujo and Beethoven were both St. Bernards in their respective films and Rin Tin Tin has been played by a series of German Shepherds.
