3. Brasilia was created to be the new capital city of Brazil and became so on its completion in 1960. Which city was capital immediately before it?

Answer: Rio de Janeiro

Salvador de Bahia was the first capital of Brazil. The capital was moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1763.

Rio was chosen to continue as capital after Brazilian independence in 1822 but, in 1955, Juscelino Kubitschek was elected as President with a promise to move the capital to a site in the centre of the country, as demanded by the constitution of 1891. The site for Brasilia had been agreed upon as early as 1922 but it was not until Kubitschek's presidency that the political will to create it became apparent.

Brasilia, designed primarily by Oscar Niemeyer (the buildings) and Lucio Costa (the urban plan) was built between 1956 and 1960. It was officially designated as capital on April 21, 1960.

Brazil was not to win the World Cup again until 1994 despite, in 1982, having a team that many consider to be one of the finest sides the country has produced. Players such as Zico, Socrates and Eder made for great entertainment and cruised through their opening group against Scotland, New Zealand and the Soviet Union.
