Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Brazil is a big country - where is it ranked in the league of largest countries worldwide?

Answer: Fifth

Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world, covering some 8,515,770 square kilometres (3,287,600 square miles). The four biggest are Russia, Canada, the United States and China.
2. So, a country of this size probably has a few neighbours. How many of the countries in South America do NOT share a border with Brazil?

Answer: Two

There are only two South American countries which do not border Brazil - Chile and Ecuador.

Brazil has borders with nine countries - Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela - and French Guyana, which is classified as a French overseas department.
3. A Brazilian flag flies in the Praca dos Tres Poderes (the Square of the Three Powers), close to the National Congress buildings, which is recognised to be the largest continually flown flag in the world. How big do you think this might be in metres?

Answer: 70 by 100 metres

To give you a sense of scale, an international adult football pitch is 100-110 metres by 65-75 metres (and I had always thought they were a standard size!).

If you wondered what that equates to in feet - 230 by 328 feet.
4. The beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro is often seen on the silver screen as a film location. A familiar landmark is the huge statue of Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer). Just how tall is this figure (not including the pedestal)?

Answer: 30 metres

The statue, in the Art Deco style, was inaugurated in October 1931. It is the fifth largest statue of Christ, the tallest being Poland's Christ the King at 33 metres.
5. Some big things come in small packages. The vibrant, entertaining Carmen Miranda sang and samba'ed her way through a series of musicals in the 1930s to the 1950s, and some of her fabulous costumes and unforgettable towering turbans covered in fruit and flowers can be seen in her museum in Rio de Janeiro. I was struck by how the size of outfits - but how tall was Carmen herself?

Answer: 1.52 metres

Yup, she was a little slip of a thing, not quite 4 feet 11 inches in height.
6. Milton Nascimento is one of my favourite Brazilian musicians. Although this Nascimento might not be a familiar name to you, there's another Nascimento from the sporting world whom you will almost certainly have heard of - who is Edison Arantes do Nascimento?

Answer: Pele

One of the most most recognised names from the world of football, this legend's nickname is familiar both to lovers of the game and those who aren't ardent fans.
7. Brazil is famous for its Carnaval celebrations which take place just before the start of Lent each year. Rio's Carnaval is the biggest and most commercial. The city's samba schools are divided into five leagues, competing against each other to produce the best dancers, music etc as they parade through the city centre. Approximately how many samba schools are there in total?

Answer: 200

This is a mammoth event - scores of visitors mix with permanent city residents to swell the population to as many as two million people on the streets, soaking up the atmosphere and watching the parade of the floats from the samba schools. A different theme for the Carnaval floats is chosen each year.

The dancing is electrifying and the sound of the samba schools' drummming bands - the 'baterias' - is breathtaking.
8. Manaus, the capital of the northern state of Amazonas, is the 11th largest city in Brazil. It stands at the meeting point of two large rivers, the Negro and Solimoes, and many tourists include the city on their travels inland to see the Amazon rainforest. During their sightseeing in the city, which of the following would they be able to see here?

Answer: An opera house

The Amazonas Opera House is home to the Amazonas Philharmonic Orchestra. It can seat up to 700 people and is used regularly for performances of both classical and modern music. It was officially opened on 31 December 1896 and the first performance took place on 7 January 1897.

The biggest football stadium is Maracana in Rio.

Iguazu waterfall is at the other end of the country and forms part of the border between Brazil and Argentina.

As of September 2013, the tallest building is the Company Business Tower Torre A)in Sao Paulo.
9. The Amazon river is an unmissable sight for many visitors to Brazil. Which of these statements about the river is NOT true?

Answer: It is the world's longest river

The Amazon is the second longest river at 6437 kilometres (3999 miles), the longest being the Nile at 6650 kilometres (4132 miles).

Howver, it is the leading river when it comes to volume, carrying one fifth of the world's total river flow. It has more than 200 tributaries, and is normally between one and six miles wide - but during the flooding season can reach a width of more than 32kilometres (20 miles).
10. Finally, a question that combines my favourite country and my favourite recording artist. In 2013, where did Bruce Springsteen perform the last night of the South American leg of his record-breaking Wrecking Ball tour?

Answer: Rio de Janeiro

Not content with resting on his laurels, a week after apparently wrapping up this 18 month tour, which kicked off in March 2012 and culminated on 21 September 2013 in Rio, the Boss announced a further round of concert dates in Australia and New Zealand to take place in February and March 2014.
