Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There's a new kid in town! A member of the Raccoon Family has been identified through DNA testing. Name the new 2014 species.

Answer: Olinguito

In South America, a cute little mammal named olinguito (pronounced oh-ling-GHEE-toe) has been determined as a new mammal for the history books. They have reddish fur, a precious petite face, and claws to scratch the heck out of a predator, although they're also used to steady the creature on tree branches.
Zookeepers have been stumped for years as to why this little creature wouldn't mate with olingos, a similar mammal in looks, slightly larger in size with dull gray fur. DNA testing proved olinguitos have their own DNA profile and thus, their own species.
Olinguitos are 12 - 14 inches long, two pounds in weight, eat fruits and insects and will mate with their own kind.
They are so cute you want to play and snuggle with them; however, I'm keeping my distance due to the claws.
2. The great mind Benjamin Franklin used to trick people with one tablespoon of olive oil stored in his walking cane. What did he do with the oil?

Answer: Poured into 1/2 acre lake to calm the rippling water

Ben was so sure of himself, he carried olive oil in his walking cane and would trick people as the occasion arose. Nothing like watching choppy water on a windy day become calm without explanation.
Before Franklin made his way across the Atlantic to the New World, he performed this experiment in Mount Pond on Clapham Common, South London. This was his contribution to "surface chemistry" in natural science.
Teachers often use this experiment in the classroom on a much smaller scale.
Ben Franklin would have been a fun uncle!
3. What was the real story behind "Puff the Magic Dragon"?

Answer: A children's poem written by Leonard Lipton

Leonard Lipton, a Cornell University student, wrote the poem on Peter Yarrow's manual typewriter while he was visiting just to "get the poem out of my head" and then left it behind. Several years later Peter Yarrow became Peter of Peter, Paul and Mary and located Lipton to give him writing credits to the song. Lipton has been receiving royalties since 1962.
I bet Leonard's beyond thrilled he got that poem out of his head!
4. Aluminum has been known to be neurotoxic. Studies as recent as 2014-2015 have proven the link between aluminum toxicity and what two diseases?

Answer: Alzheimer's and Parkinson's

Scientists conclude that the olfactory system and lungs play a significant part in the accumulation of aluminum in one's brain. Recent studies show that aluminum contamination in food, drugs, and consumer products is more serious than previously suggested.
Aluminum is non-destructible and changes form by attaching or separating from other particles. Aluminum toxicity can be found through occupational and environmental contamination.
Carry-on research, as we need you!
5. Jenny Lind was a famous 19th Century European opera singer and America has given Jenny Lind's name to numerous commercial products over the years. Can you pick the product that is the odd man out?

Answer: The face of American Express

Jenny was Swedish-born, nicknamed the "Swedish Nightingale", and was the most successful female singer of her time. When she was about to end her operatic singing career, she was approached by a P.T. Barnum representative to tour the United States and she negotiated her own contract with Mr. Barnum which was monetarily sound and fruitful. In the 1850s, Jenny had as much success in the US as she did in Great Britain due to changing her repertoire by singing popular songs with a few arias included.
Other items with her name were plants/flowers, snuff boxes, handkerchiefs, and pianos.
6. The Jones Family murder-suicide is one of the most legendary massive cult killings. How did the majority of the followers die?

Answer: Cyanide in fruit drink

On November 18, 1978, 918 Americans died in Jonestown, Guyana. Of those dead were 276 children.
Killed but not participating in the mass murder/suicides were Americans there to help potential defectors and to offer exposure to the cult's dangerous beliefs, including Congressman Leo Ryan and members of the media. Their murders were ordered by cult leader Jim Jones who was later found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Jim Jones compared himself to Jesus Christ.
7. Photographs of a rare un-contacted indigenous tribe of about 100 members were taken in 2016. In what country does this tribe live?

Answer: Brazil

A disunited branch of 100 members have been photographed for the first time in the Yanomami Indigenous territory, which is twice the size of Switzerland, deep in the rainforests and mountains of northern Brazil.
The northern Brazilian Amazon whose residents are the Yanomami tribe is under constant threat by outside developers and gold miners who have encroached on this specific area of the jungle. The modern day encroaching villains have brought malaria and mercury exposed food and water sources threatening the well-being and possibly contributing to extinction of the tribe.
8. Who selected the four faces to be sculpted in what we know as Mount Rushmore?

Answer: Sculptor Gutzon Borglum

The one question workers, volunteers, and park rangers hear most often is, "So, which one is President Rushmore?" Educators take a deep breath; we have many foreign tourists to this US landmark. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!)
It was the actual sculptor Gutzon Borglum who selected which four faces would be carved into his masterpiece to represent the first 150 years of American history. Left to right: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.
Master sculpture Gutzon Borglum began construction on the granite mountain face in 1927 collaborating with over 400 blasters, carvers and workers for over 14 years but died before its completion, at the age of 74.
The granite sculpture is found near Keystone, South Dakota and is known as Mount Rushmore. The name was given by a local guide in honor of Charles E. Rushmore, a NY attorney who was sent to S.D. to verify land titles in 1884.
9. Austin, Texas is recognized for their accomplished 19th-century German-born female sculpturist. Name the artist.

Answer: Elisabet Ney

Elizabet Ney (January 1833 - June 1907) is known for her life-size sculptures of Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston that were exhibited at the Columbian World's Fair in 1893.
Before immigrating to America when she was 39, Elisabet was known for her sculptures of European royalty and political leaders. She continued this tradition once in Texas and her work can be found in the Texas State Capitol, US Capitol, and The Smithsonian.
She had a rebellious personality and her efforts to gain recognition for her work were both heartbreaking and entertaining. There is a museum at her Austin home and studio with many of her works which include both women and men and a sculpture of Jesus Christ as she saw Him. This is not a museum to breeze in and out if you're passionate regarding visual art - you will find yourself studying every minute detail.
I am a huge fan!
10. A human body produces mucus to keep specific areas of the head moist or lubricated. How much mucus does a human produce in one day?

Answer: 1 quart

1 quart = 2 pints = 4 cups = 32 ounces of post nasal drip.
I bet this is snot what you wanted to know!
The drip or drainage is to keep your mucus membranes moist. Still snot sold?
If you breathe in nasty pollen, the pollen particles will get caught by the mucus so they don't travel to your lungs. Snot so bad to have around after all.
(Sorry, I saw the opportunity and ran with it)
