Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Red Sea lies between Northeastern Africa and Southwestern Asia. Which country does not have a coastline on the Red Sea?

Answer: Iraq

The Red Sea covers an area of about 169,000 square miles. It is over 1400 miles long but only about 220 miles wide. Saudi Arabia has the longest coastline on the Red Sea of any nation. Eritrea and Yemen also have coastlines along the Red Sea. The Red Sea is connected to the Mediterranean Sea by the Suez Canal.
2. One of the stock characters on many sit-coms is the "dad". On which sit-com is the dad of the main character nicknamed "Red"?

Answer: That 70s Show

Reginald "Red" Forman, played by Kurtwood Smith, is the husband of Kitty and the father of Eric. Appearing in almost every episode of "That 70s Show", he often seems to be grumpy--at least on the surface. To be fair, the basement of his home seems to be one of the main hangouts of Eric and his friends. One of Red's often-used sayings is to refer to Eric or one of his friends as a "dumbass".
3. In the movie "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994), Morgan freeman plays the role of the prisoner Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding. One who only viewed the movie would assume that the nickname Red was based on the last name Redding. What was the reason for the nickname in the original novella?

Answer: He had red hair.

In Stephen King's novella "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" (1982), Red is described as a white man Irish descent with graying red hair. In the movie, this is indirectly referenced by having Red joke "Maybe I'm Irish".
4. Infrared radiation falls outside of the range of usually visual light. Where does it fall on the spectrum?

Answer: A longer wavelength than visible light but shorter wavelength than microwave radiation.

Here's the breakdown of wavelengths:
Gamma ray radiation is less than .01 nanometer (nm).
X-ray radiation is .01 to 10 nm.
Ultraviolet radiation is 10 to 400 nm.
visible light is 400 to 700 nm.
Infrared radiation is 700 nm to 1 millimeter (mm).
Microwave radiation is 1 mm to 1 meter.
Radio waves are 1 meter to 100,000 kilometers.
5. The Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) is one of the most common species of the order Carnivora. On which of the following continents is it not found?

Answer: Antarctica

The Red Fox can also be found in Europe and Asia. The Red Fox was introduced to Australia by British settlers in the 1800s who wanted to be able to participate in the sport of fox hunting. Primarily feeding on rodents and other small animals, Red Foxes also eat some fruits and vegetables.
6. Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote the novel "The Scarlet Letter" (1850). The main character, Hester Prynne, wears which scarlet, or red, letter on her dress?

Answer: A because of Adultery.

While all of these would have been serious crimes in Puritan Massachusetts, Hester had been found guilty of adultery as shown by the birth of her daughter Pearl. It is not until later in the novel that her partner in adultery was found to be the town's minister, Arthur Dimmesdale. "The Scarlet Letter" was a very popular book when it was first published and is still commonly studied today in Literature classes.
7. For which tobacco product is "Red Man" a brand name?

Answer: Chewing tobacco

Founded in 1904, the brand originated with the Pinkerton Tobacco company in Owensboro, KY. Red Man produced a line of baseball cards from 1952-1955 that was sold along with their product. The brand was later acquired by the Swedish Match company.
8. The Reds are a MLB team based in Cincinnati, OH. Many a famous player has played for or managed the team and had his number retired. Which player has not had his number retired with the Cincinnati Reds?

Answer: Honus Wagner

Shortstop Honus Wagner spent his career (1897-1917) with the Louisville Colonels and Pittsburgh Pirates. He got over 3,400 hits in his MLB career and his number has been retired, but by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He hit 630 home runs and was a 13-time MLB All-Star. Catcher Johnny Bench spent his entire career (1967-1983) with the Reds.

He was a 14-time MLB All-Star and is in the MLB Hall of Fame. Outfielder Frank Robinson spent the first 10 seasons of his MLB career (1956-1976) as a Red. He hit 586 home runs and later managed several MLB teams, although never the Reds. Second Baseman Joe Morgan spent eight seasons of his MLB career (1963-1984) with the Reds.

He is also in the MLB Hall of Fame and went into broadcasting after his playing career.
9. "Monopoly" is a famous board game where players attempt to acquire properties and bankrupt each other. In the classic American version of the game, which property is not part of the "red" set of properties?

Answer: Tennessee Avenue

Tennessee Avenue is valued at $180 and is in the orange group with St. James Place and New York Avenue. Kentucky and Indiana Avenue are each valued at $220 dollars and Illinois Avenue is valued at $240 dollars. The red properties lie just past the Free Parking spot.
10. Which "Scooby-Doo" series featured a regular character named "Red Herring"?

Answer: A Pup Named Scooby-Doo

"A Pup Named Scooby-Doo" aired from 1988-1991. In this version, the human characters--Shaggy, Velman, Daphne, and Fred--were de-aged to Junior High and Scooby was not yet full-grown. The character of Red Herring seemed to exist for the purpose of Freddy accusing him in almost every episode of being the villain, which would later be proven false.

In the one episode where Freddy resisted this temptation, Red Herring actually was the villain. In a mystery story, a "red herring" is a false clue that can throw the detective off the trail to the true criminal.
