Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Victoria was one of the ships in Ferdinand Magellan's fleet when he attempted a circumnavigation of the planet. What nationality was Magellan?

Answer: Portuguese

Despite his demise during the Filipino Battle of Mactan in 1521 (and thus his failure to complete his circumnavigation of the world), Ferdinand Magellan's ship the Victoria was awarded the title of the first ship to complete such a task. After Magellan's death, Juan Sebastián Elcano piloteded the rest of the expedition as the Victoria returned home to Spain.
2. The delicious Victoria sponge cake typically contains cream and which other ingredient sandwiched between two layers of sponge?

Answer: Raspberry jam

Indeed named for Queen Victoria herself, the Victoria sponge is a staple of many an afternoon tea. This simple but oh so tasty jam and cream cake sandwich is typically topped with a light dusting of icing sugar and served by itself (but it's not out the question to accompany it with an extra blob of cream if you're feeling naughty).
3. Australia, the wide, brown land down under, is comprised of six states and two territories. Victoria is one such state, but which of these cities will you not find in Victoria?

Answer: Cairns

Melbourne is the capital of the state of Victoria, and by far the most populous city. Geelong and Bendigo are also up there in terms of population. Victoria itself is found on the southeastern coast of Australia, south of New South Wales and east of South Australia. It contains Wilsons Promontory, the southernmost point of mainland Australia.

Cairns is, of course, located in far north Queensland and its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef makes it one of the country's tourism hotspots.
4. Many of us know the North American Great Lakes, but where will you find Lake Victoria, part of another group of Great Lakes?

Answer: Africa

There is some debate over which of the several lakes in this region should be considered as the Great Lakes, but ultimately they're all part of the same ecological system. Lake Victoria is undoubtedly the largest of the lakes, named, of course, for Queen Victoria. Lake Albert, another of the lakes, was similarly named for her husband, Prince Albert.
5. Nicknamed 'Posh', Victoria Adams (as she was known then before her marriage to David Beckham) was a member of which popular British girl group?

Answer: Spice Girls

Formed in the 1990s, the Spice Girls took the musical charts by storm, giving some of the established boy bands of the time like the Backstreet Boys a run for their money. The group was comprised of five girls, each with their own "spice" nickname: Victoria Adams was Posh, Melanie Brown was Scary, Melane Chisholm was Sporty, Emma Bunton was Baby, and Geri Halliwell was Ginger.

In their heyday, the Spice Girls were compared to the Beatles in terms of their popularity both in the UK and across the pond.
6. Victoria's Secret, a popular name in the world of fashion, primarily deals in which area of clothing?

Answer: Lingerie

Regarded the world over as one of the top lingerie companies, Victoria's Secret's name refers to the Victorian-style atmosphere and furnishings that the brand's creator Roy Raymond envisaged. The "secret" part hints at the wares on offer behind its decorous facade. Official catwalk models and spokeswomen for Victoria's Secret are referred to as "angels" and many top models have been Angels at some point, including Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum and Miranda Kerr.
7. Victoria is the capital city of a number of places around the world. Which of these does not have a capital city called Victoria?

Answer: The US state of Arkansas

British Columbia is located on the western coast of Canada, southeast of Alaska. Although it is not the most populous city in the province (that honour goes to Vancouver), Victoria, the capital, is one of the oldest and (surprise, surprise) was named for Queen Victoria.

Located off Africa in the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles are a popular tourist destination, thanks to beautiful beaches and tropical climate. Mahe is the country's largest island and is home to its capital city, Victoria.

Malta can be found in the Mediterranean Sea, south of Italy. Seven islands make up the country, with Gozo being one of them. Victoria is the largest city on Gozo. Valletta, Malta's capital, is on the island of Malta.

There is a city called Victoria in Arkansas, but it is not the capital of the state. That honour goes to Little Rock.
8. London Victoria, one of the city's busiest transport hubs, has both overground and underground (Tube) stations. On which of these "urban" Tube lines does Victoria not lie (denoted by a purple colour on the official Tube map)?

Answer: Metropolitan line

Of course, the Victoria line runs through Victoria station. It runs from Brixton to Walthamstow Central, passing through some of London's major stations, like Euston and King's Cross St. Pancras.

The District line runs in several different directions at Earl's Court station: north to Edgware Road, east to Ealing Broadway and Richmond, south to Wimbledon and east to Upminster.

The Circle line runs in a loop around London, with a separate track heading towards Hammersmith from Paddington station. As well as Victoria, other stations on the Circle line include Westminster, Liverpool Street and Baker Street.

The Metropolitan line runs from Aldgate to Harrow-on-the-Hill, where it splits into two lines and continues out of Greater London into Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.
9. Victoria Bitter is a popular brand of beer in which country, having originated there?

Answer: Australia

Commonly abbreviated to VB, Victoria Bitter was invented in Melbourne in the early years of the twentieth century. It is made by Carlton & United Breweries, who also make the Carlton range of beers. Not to be outdone by Melbourne, VB's other competitors from around Australia include Brisbane's XXXX and Sydney's Toohey's.
10. Victoria was, rather aptly, the Roman goddess of victory. Who was Victoria's counterpart in Greek mythology (whose name is perhaps more famous nowadays for being associated with a global sporting brand)?

Answer: Nike

Victoria's name comes from the Latin word "victory", with Nike being the Greek translation. Compared to Nike in Greek mythology, Victoria was worshipped much more in Roman mythology. Notably, the Victory Column in Berlin has a statue of Victoria at the top of it, holding aloft a wreath, a common symbol of victory and success.
