Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these English rock bands released the song "Lola", written by vocalist Ray Davies, in 1970?

Answer: The Kinks

"Lola" was released from The Kinks' eighth album "Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One" in June 1970. The song is written from the perspective of a man who goes out clubbing in London, and has an encounter with Lola, who is either a transvestite or transgender.

The song ends: "Well I'm not the world's most masculine man / But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man / And so is Lola". According to Ray Davies, he wrote the song after he saw his manager dancing with a woman, and then noticed that she had stubble! Apparently the manager did not care, as he was so drunk.
2. Dolly the sheep was the first mammal to be cloned from a somatic, or body, cell. This occurred at the Roslin Institute near which city?

Answer: Edinburgh, Scotland

Due to the cloning process, Dolly had three mothers: one ewe provided the egg, a second ewe provided the DNA from a mammary gland cell, and a third ewe carried her to term. During the cloning process, the egg cell had its nucleus and thus DNA removed, and then DNA from another animal's cell was introduced into the egg. An electric shock caused the cell to begin dividing, and Dolly's life was begun. The embryo was implanted into the surrogate ewe.

Dolly had six lambs of her own: a single birth, then twins, then triplets! She died at the age of six in 2003. Because she was cloned from a mammary gland cell, the researchers named after Dolly Parton and her impressive chest!
3. The 1938 movie "Der blaue Engel" ("The Blue Angel"), starring Marlene Dietrich as the character Lola-Lola, was based on the 1905 novel "Professor Unrat" ("Professor Garbage") by which German author?

Answer: Heinrich Mann

The plot of the movie adaptation differs quite a bit from that of the book, although the basic premise is the same. The title "Professor Unrat" is a play on the protagonist's name Raat - "Unrat" is the German for "garbage", and is his nickname from his students. He discovers a poem addressed to a Rosa Fröhlich in one of his student's notebooks, and tracks her down as a dancer at the club, "The Blue Angel". Rosa and Raat begin a relationship, and after he is fired from his job, he marries her, and becomes financially ruined. At the end of the book, the student who wrote the poem, Lohmann, offers to repay Rosa's debts, and Raat in his jealousy tries to strangle him and rob him of his wallet.

In the movie, Rosa is instead named Lola-Lola. Raat resigns from his job, and to pay his bills, he joins her cabaret troupe as a clown. However, his jealousy overcomes him when he sees her kiss another member of the troupe; he tries to strangle Lola, but is subdued and locked in a straitjacket. Freed the next day, he returns to his old classroom where he dies in humiliation and remorse.
4. Lola Island is part of which of these countries in Oceania, whose capital is Honiara?

Answer: Solomon Islands

Solomon Islands is a country located in the Pacific Ocean east of Papua New Guinea. Most Solomon Islanders are Melanesians, and the official language is English. The country is divided into nine provinces, and the capital Honiara is a special administrative area.

Lola Island is located in Western Province, and the Zipolo Habu Resort there is a popular tourist destination. There are good surf breaks around the island, and it is only a short journey from the famed Skull Island on New Georgia. This is a sacred shrine dedicated to the local warriors who participated in headhunting; the skulls of many enemies can be seen, as well as beautifully decorated caskets containing skulls of the warriors' chiefs. The shrine is accessible by tourists for a small fee.
5. Which of these authors is the creator of the cruel teacher and government official Dolores Umbridge?

Answer: J.K. Rowling

Dolores Jane Umbridge appears in J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series in the fifth installment, "The Order of the Phoenix". She is a condescending, cruel woman, who gives off an air of sweetness; she likes cats, wears pink, and has a peculiar high-pitched voice.

When she gets appointed to the post of Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts School, she works her way up the ranks, making dramatic changes to the school along the way, such as removing practical defense spells from the curriculum, and firing other teachers.

She is working for the Minister of Magic, who is convinced that headmaster Albus Dumbledore is raising an army of students against the Ministry. Umbridge's cruelty shows itself by such acts as forcing students to write with quills that cut the words in their skin, using their blood as the ink, and attempting to use a torturing curse to question students.
6. Dolly Parton is known as the Queen of Country Music, and has had many hits such as "I Will Always Love You" and "9 to 5". However, she is also known as an actress, and starred as Truvy Jones in what movie, which revolves around the friendship of six Louisianan women?

Answer: Steel Magnolias

Dolly Parton is possibly the best known country singer-songwriter, having composed more than 3000 songs in her lifetime. In addition, she plays many instruments, including the guitar, flute, harmonica, and more. She owns a theme park in her home state of Tennessee, Dollywood, and has done a lot of philanthropic work, including helping the conservation of the bald eagle with a sanctuary at Dollywood.

"Steel Magnolias" was released in 1989, based on a play of the same name by Robert Harling. It concerns the friendship of six women, including a mother and daughter, and their reactions to the daughter having a child despite her medical issues. It also starred Sally Field and Julia Roberts.
7. The titular character of the movie "Run, Lola, Run" (1998), called "Lola rennt" in the original German, has twenty minutes to find 100,000 marks in order to save the life of her boyfriend. Which actress, who also starred in "The Bourne Identity" (2002), played Lola?

Answer: Franka Potente

The film shows three different scenarios in which Lola tries to obtain the money that her criminal boyfriend, Manni, has lost, instead of giving it to his crime boss. Manni accidentally left it on a train, and sees a homeless man pick up the bag, but is unable to reach him before the train pulls away. In desperation, he plans to rob a supermarket, as he needs the money in 20 minutes for the boss, but Lola tells him she will sort it out.

Franka Potente was born in 1974 in Münster, in what was then West Germany. The part of Lola was specifically written for her by screenwriter and director Tom Tykwer, after they met in a café. For the role, she won a Bambi award for Best Actress. Her first English-language role was in 2001, in the film "Storytelling", in which she played a minor part.
8. Which author wrote the infamous novel "Lolita" (1955) in English, later translating it into his native Russian?

Answer: Vladimir Nabokov

"Lolita" tells of a man, with the pseudonym Humbert Humbert, who becomes attracted to an 11-year-old girl, Dolores, whom he calls Lolita in private, and marries her mother to be closer to her. They eventually become intimately involved with each other, with Dolores initiating their relations the first time, but she does not love him in return.

Because of the controversial nature of the book, and considering the time in which it was written, it was first rejected by several publishers, until it was finally published in 1955 in Paris. It has remained controversial in modern times, with many critics divided over whether Humbert is a rapist, or whether Lolita, who had already had sex previously, was a precociously sexual youth. The content of the book is not as erotic as perhaps some would think, but is still on some level a disturbing read no matter the interpretation.
9. The Dolores River is a tributary of a river with the same name as one of the US states it runs through. Which state, home to Mount Elbert, is this?

Answer: Colorado

The Dolores River arises in the San Juan Mountains, a range of the Rocky Mountains, in the state of Colorado, and is over 200 miles (320 km) long. It eventually joins the Colorado River in the neighboring state of Utah. The river is dammed by the McPhee Reservoir, in order to provide water for the nearby counties.

It is possible to go rafting on areas of the Dolores, whose elevation is approximately 1340 m (4400 ft).
10. The name Lola is used as a feminine name in many countries, including Uzbekistan in central Asia. What does Lola mean in the Uzbek language?

Answer: Tulip

More than twenty species of tulips grow in the mountains and deserts of Uzbekistan. At least five are endemic in various regions, including the Chatkal and Nurata mountains. Dr. Komiljon Tojibayev, who wrote the book "Tulips of Uzbekistan", escorts tourists on a ten day "tulip tour", where you can see the various species of tulips growing in their natural habitat and go through many cities, including capital Tashkent and Samarkand.

"Lola" can indeed mean "grandmother", but this is in the Tagalog language of the Philippines. "Sorrows" or "pains" is the meaning of Dolores in Spanish, of which Lola is a short form.
