'Yesterday' is one their most famous songs and is one of the most covered songs of all time. It was composed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and was released in 1965.

Although it reached number 1 in the United States, it did not do so in the United Kingdom.
2. Who wrote the book 'Bloodtide'?

Answer: Melvin Burgess

Melvin Burgess is a British author that is well known for dealing with controversial issues in his books. Topics covered include drug abuse, witchcraft and homelessness. 'Bloodtide' was published in 1999 and focuses on the feuding of two rival gangs in futuristic London.
3. Which other film was Eli Roth (director of 'Hostel') responsible for?

Answer: 'Cabin Fever'

'Cabin Fever' was Eli Roth's first film and was released in 2002. Co-writer Randy Pearlstein was Roth's roommate in film school. Roth had already written a rough draft of the script and he enlisted Pearlstein's help to make it into a feature length film.
4. Which non-disney film featured a dog called Charlie?

Answer: 'All Dogs Go To Heaven'

'All Dogs Go to Heaven' was released in 1989. It is about a dog named Charlie (voiced by Burt Reynolds) that returns from the dead to seek revenge on his killer with the help from Anne-Marie, an orphan girl who can talk to animals.
5. Who wrote the World War I poem, 'In Flanders Fields'?

Answer: John McCrae

John McCrae was part of the Canadian Army. The poem is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in Ypres, Belgium in 1915. Its opening lines are some of the most memorable of all war poems.
"In Flanders Fields the poppies blow; between the crosses, row on row."
6. What is the Arabic word for 'free thinking'?

Answer: Ijtihad

Ijtihad is Arabic for 'free-thinking.' It is in particular reference to the time of the Abbasid Caliphate in Arabia (750-1200s), when the Islamic civilization was seen as one of the most advanced in the world. Ijtihad was encouraged, with the great Greek literary works from Plato and Aristotle being commissioned to be translated into Arabic.

Some of the world's most well-known poets and philosophers stem from this time, for example al-Ghazzali, and al-Razi (the best selling poet in America in the 1990s).
7. What was the name of the pirate radio station that was broadcasting from a ship off the Isle of Man in 1964?

Answer: 'Radio Caroline'

In 1960s Britain, the only radio stations available were from the 'BBC'. Many teenagers wanted to listen to the current music of the time, which the 'BBC' did not provide. Instead they tuned into pirate radio stations such as 'Radio Caroline.' Eventually 'Radio Caroline' was closed down by the government and the 'BBC' launched a new popular music station in 1967, known as 'Radio 1'.
8. Which animals did Pavlov work with to create his theory of conditioning?

Answer: Dogs

Ivan Pavlov created his theory of conditioning in 1911. This theory states that if a stimulus X is paired with stimulus Y to produce an effect over and over again, then the effect will eventually happen without the presence of stimulus Y. This is based on Pavlov's discovery that if he rang a bell every time he fed two dogs, the dogs would eventually drool when they heard the bell, even when there was no food.

This is because Pavlov had conditioned the dogs to associate the sound of a bell with being fed.
9. What is the second largest city in Portugal?

Answer: Porto

The capital of Portugal, Lisbon, is the largest city in the country with 535,740 inhabitants. Porto is the second largest city with a population of 263,600. It is located on the northern coast of the country, where the river Douro meets the sea.
10. Who was the first successful inventor of the sewing machine?

Answer: Elias Howe

Although Isaac Singer is often credited with the invention of the sewing machine, he actually used the same lockstitch that Elias Howe patented in 1846. Howe sued Singer for patent infringement in 1854 and won his case. This little-known fact is actually mentioned at the end of the Beatles' movie, 'Help'.
