Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In chemistry, what would be the most appropriate name for the compound with the formula Al2O3?

Answer: Aluminum oxide

When an element, such as aluminum, has extra electrons, they will give them up. This will give them a positive charge. Elements like oxygen need electrons and will acquire electrons. This gives them a negative charge. When one element that needs them, takes electrons from an element with extra electrons, an ionic bond forms. Ionically bonded compounds are named by stating the positively charged part (aluminum) and then the negative with an -ide ending (oxide). Thus AlO3 would be aluminum oxide.
2. Kublai Khan was perhaps one of the most famous Mongol rulers of China. What was the name of the dynasty he established?

Answer: Yuan

During the time of Mongol occupation, trade flourished. On a side note, when the Mongols tried to take over Japan during this period, they faced problems in the form of harsh winds. The Japanese called these winds "kamikaze," or "divine winds."
3. On the television show "Get Smart," KAOS was the evil organization that opposed CONTROL. What did KAOS stand for?

Answer: Absolutely nothing

As can be expected, CONTROL didn't stand for anything either. However, that just contributed to the show's appealing craziness and satire.
4. One of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century, she proposed the objectivist philosophy. Who is this author of "Anthem", "The Fountainhead", and "Atlas Shrugged"?

Answer: Ayn Rand

"Anthem" is a novella about a man who struggles and prevails against his collectivist world. I would highly recommend the book if you have not read it.
5. Many authors often list part of their name as only initials. C. S. Lewis was the author of "Mere Christianity", "The Screwtape Letters", and "The Chronicles of Narnia", to name a few. However, what did the C. S. stand for?

Answer: Clive Staples

C. S. Lewis wrote many influential novels, the most famous of which is probably "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe."
6. Into what body of water does the Ganges River empty?

Answer: Bay of Bengal

The Ganges River, Hinduism's most sacred, played a role in the early river valley civilizations of India. Lake Baikal is the world's deepest lake and is located in Russia.
7. What is the probability of rolling two six-sided dice numbered from one to six and getting the same number on both rolls?

Answer: 1/6

Regardless of what you roll the first time, there is only one number on the other die that matches the one you rolled. Thus there is a 1/6 chance of rolling "doubles."
8. English words often come from Latin. Consider the Latin word "cogito." While it may not sound familiar at first, you can probably reason its meaning through similar English words like "cognitive." You could then reasonably conclude that "cogito" has to do with thinking. Using this logic, what is the best translation of the Latin verb "dormio?"

Answer: I sleep

English derivatives of "dormio" include dormitory (a place for sleeping) and dormant (at rest).
9. Which of the following is a moon of Mars?

Answer: Phobos

Mars has two moons, Deimos and Phobos. Deimos and Phobos mean "pain" and "fear," respectively.
10. Name the scientist who famously said, "God does not play dice with the world."

Answer: Albert Einstein

I warned you that this quiz would cover the entire trivia spectrum! I hope you had fun.
