Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to literary tradition, what kind of people would use a map with the legend "X marks the spot"?

Answer: Pirates/treasure hunters

Urban Dictionary notes the phrase was "Derived from an X on pirate treasure maps. The phrase was put into common usage by the British army, who performed executions by marking a piece of paper with a black x and positioning it on the heart of someone sentenced to death."
In the 1963 movie "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World", the location of the buried treasure was indicated by an X shape created by two palm trees leaning towards and past each other.
2. "The X-Files" was a critically acclaimed TV show that attracted huge viewership figures. Which acting duo were best known in the leading roles?

Answer: David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson

Duchovny and Anderson played the FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Muller believed that there could be paranormal or supernatural explanations to mysteries. Scully was sceptical; she believed there were 'normal' explanations for everything.
The show first aired in September 1993 and ran for nine seasons. It was a multi-award winner, with five Golden Globes for acting and for the show. Duchovny left the show in Season Seven.
3. Who piloted an aircraft designated X-1 to become the first man to officially break the sound barrier in level flight?

Answer: Chuck Yeager

Yeager was at the controls of the Bell X-1 (a derivative of other Bell aircraft with similar designations) on 14 October 1947 when it reached 807.2 mph. The speed of sound is 768mph.
Yeager later said: "I thought I was seeing things! We were flying supersonic! And it was as smooth as a baby's bottom: Grandma could be sitting up there sipping lemonade."
(Please do not send correction notes surrounding the claims that other pilots beat Yeager to the record, many of those claims were not properly substantiated and he's the one the history books say did it).
Trubshaw and Waddell were tests pilots for Concorde and Boeing 747 respectively.
4. In the English-language version of the game of scrabble, what value does X have on a single square?

Answer: Eight

There are 152 words that start with X. Of these xerographically will get you 33 points. In addition, 391 end with an x. Archaeopteryx will get you 30 points. (Disclaimer: Values correct at time this quiz was written!)
5. Which Australian actor led the cast in the 2000 movie "X-Men"?

Answer: Hugh Jackman

The stories of a superhero team first appeared in Marvel Comics from 1963. In the comics and in several movies, battles between humans and mutants were depicted. Several sequels followed the first movie.
6. During WW2, which country developed midget submarines designated "X-Craft"?

Answer: Britain

The X-Class subs were a little over 50 feet long and had a crew of four. Twenty were built and one of their most audacious operations was the attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz in September 1943. Six craft took part and although four were lost, two laid charges under the Tirpitz and the resulting explosions and damage put her out of commission until April 1944.
Germany, meanwhile, had a full-sized Type X submarine in WW2. It was designed as a long-range mine layer and also used as a transport vessel.
7. Which of these was the home town of a punk band called X?

Answer: Los Angeles

In 1977, the founder members were Exene Cervenka, vocals; John Doe, vocals and bass guitar; Billy Zoom, guitars; and DJ Bonebrake on drums.
The band recorded and toured regularly between 1977 and 1993, when they broke up. X reformed briefly in 1995 and then more definitively in 2005.
8. Who is credited as inventing the X-ray?

Answer: Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen

In November 1895, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered X-rays by accident. The first proper X-ray was said to be of his wife's hand. He called the new technique X radiation. The X stood for "unknown".
9. Who created "The X Factor" TV talent show?

Answer: Simon Cowell

"The X Factor" first aired in the UK in September 2004 but was soon picked up in other countries, including the USA, Australia, Russia and China. The aim was to take aspiring singers from auditions right through to a knock-out TV show, in which viewers voted for the best acts.

The season winner got a recording contract. Cowell was chief judge in many of the UK and US seasons. Although a huge ratings winner, the show was frequently slammed by the critics and many in the mainstream music business.
10. In 2001 Apple Computers put a new operating system called OS X on general release. After which 'big cat' was the first version also known?

Answer: Cheetah

The running order of OS X releases was: Version 10.0: "Cheetah"; 10.1: "Puma"; 10.2: "Jaguar"; 10.3: "Panther"; 10.4: "Tiger"; 10.5: "Leopard"; 10.6: "Snow Leopard"; 10.7: "Lion"; 10.8: "Mountain Lion".
(The Beta version was named "Kodiak".)
This quiz was written on an iMac running Version 10.6.8, "Snow Leopard".
In 2007 Apple trademarked names for a future OS 11, which will have the names of bears. [arstechnica.com/apple/news]
