Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following persons won the 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP) championships at the tender age of twenty-one?

Answer: Joe Cada

Cada, who was nicknamed "The Kid" by his agent, was taken onboard as a member of Team PokerStars in 2009, just before his big win in the Championships. In the process he overtook Peter Eastgate as the youngest player to win the event.
Mikada Bjada is a member of Francesca and Mikada, who are an electronic pop outfit from Malta. Erik Estrada is best-known as the motorcycle policeman Francis "Ponch" Poncherello from the television series 'CHiPS' (1977-1983) and Damani Dada is a hip hop clothing label.
2. Dada is a three piece rock band from California, but which of the following is also known as 'Dada'?

Answer: All three of these have been known as Dada

Idi Amin led a coup that overthrew Milton Obote in 1971, and he then ruled as President of Uganda until 1979. His reign is riddled with a litany of human rights issues and economic mismanagement. His attempt to annex the Tanzanian province of Kagera in 1978 resulted in the start of the Ugandan-Tanzanian War, which ultimately led to his demise. Amin fled to Libya and he passed away in 2003. Idi's father, Andreas Nyabire, converted to Islam in 1910.

In the process he changed his name to Amin Dada which was passed onto his first born son Idi. Sourav Ganguly played over 100 Test matches for India, scoring in excess of 7,000 runs.

He is regarded as one of India's best exponents of the One Day game, at one time ranked the sixth best of all time by Wisden.

He became the second Indian batsman to surpass 10,000 runs in One Day Internationals. I haven't been able to track down why Sourav is called Dada. The nearest I can identify is that the term means 'elder brother' or 'big brother' in the region he was born. Matt Schwartz is an Israeli born record producer, musician and DJ based in the UK.

He is also known as Dada, The Drill and M'black. Under the guise of M'black he reached number 1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Charts with the song "Heartbreak" in 2010.
3. Lada is the trademark of a Russian manufacturer of __________ .

Answer: Motor vehicles

Lada serves as the trademark for AvtoVAZ. They came to the fore during the 1980s, selling massive numbers of 'economy' style cars throughout Western Europe. They were popular vehicles because they were not pretentious. It also helped that they were designed to survive harsh Russian conditions, which made them both durable and functional.

They were also very well priced and had uncomplicated mechanics. In 2008, French car manufacturer Renault paid $US one billion for a 25% stake in AutoVAZ.
4. Mel Brooks played the role of Tomas de Torquemada in which 1981 comedy?

Answer: History of the World, Part One

The film was a parody that centred on four ages of history: the dawn of man, the Roman Empire, the Spanish Inquisition and the French Revolution. Brooks certainly enjoyed being the focus in this movie as he held down five roles in the film. Along with the role of Torquemada (you "can't Torquemada anything" i.e. talk him outta anything) he also portrayed Moses, Comicus (a stand-up philosopher), King Louis XVI and Jacques.

Tomas de Torquemada was notorious for his role in the Spanish Inquisition and has provided inspiration for a large number of creators that include Victor Hugo, who wrote a poem about him in 1865. He is a villain in the British comic "2000 A.D." and is also a member of the Green Lantern Corps in the DC Comics universe.
5. What sort of creature is a gelada?

Answer: Monkey

The Gelada is an old world monkey that is sometimes called the Gelada Baboon. It is found predominantly in the Semien Mountains in the Ethiopian highlands. Geladas are a terrestrial animal, and they are grazers, feeding predominantly on grasses, seeds and herbs.

Their social structure consists of a reproductive unit which may contain up to twelve females and four males. There are also all-male cells containing up to fifteen males. They can reproduce throughout the year, though in some communities there may be peak mating periods. Geladas are diurnal creatures, meaning they are active during the day and sleep at night.
6. A stew made from beans with beef and pork best describes which of the following?

Answer: Feijoada

This dish is originally from the Beira and Estremadura regions of Portugal, which introduced it to South America. Brazil considers it to be its national dish. Feijao is the Portuguese word for beans.

An enchilada is a filled corn tortilla that is dished up with a chili sauce. An empanada is a baked, or fried, stuffed bread or pastry. Panada is a soup made from leftover bread, eggs, beef broth and Parmigiano cheese.
7. Which of the following is a style of Brazilian dance that became highly fashionable during the late 1980s on the back of a huge international hit by French pop group Kaoma?

Answer: Lambada

The lambada is performed with arched legs. The movements are generally side to side with exaggerated hip movement. In more recent times it has been seen as a form of 'dirty' dancing. This may be because of the prevalence of short skirts that were the fashion at the time, the suggestive lyrics that were incorporated within lambada associated songs and the provocative moves that were evidenced in the movie "Lambada" (1990). Kaoma's song, entitled "Lambada", appeared on their debut album "WorldBeat" and went on to sell in excess of five million copies. Tostada represents a range of traditional dishes that are toasted or made from toasted ingredients.

Theravada is a form of religious doctrine closely associated with early Buddhism and Ensenada is the third largest city in Baja California.
8. Allan Sherman's 1963 hit "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh" is set in which fictional camp?

Answer: Granada

"Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh" won a Grammy in 1964 for Allan Sherman for Best Novelty Song. It was inspired by a letter he'd received from his own son complaining about the camp he was at. The song reached number two on Billboard's Hot 100 and stayed there for three weeks.

The song has been translated into numerous languages, including Hebrew. In 1965, Milton Bradley cashed in on the popularity of the song and released a board game called "Camp Granada" where the aim of the contest is to be the first child to make it out of the 'rotten' camp. Nevada is the seventh largest state in the USA. Salada is the brand name of an Australian cracker biscuit and Posada is a name borne by a number of towns, villages and parishes around the world.
9. What is an autostrada?

Answer: Motorway

Autostrada is the name given to Italy's national system of motorways that stretches for some 6,400 kilometres. It also represents the name of a motorway in Romania, as well as forming part of Poland's road infrastructure.
10. Cicada is a DC Comics super-villain who gained his powers when he was struck by lightning. With which DC Comics super-hero does he share an affinity?

Answer: Flash

David Hersch murders his wife in the midst of a thunderstorm. He comes to regret his actions and seeks to end his own life. Before he does he is struck by lightning. Instead of destroying him, it gives him the power to transfer the life force of others to himself, giving him immortality. Adopting the name Cicada, he now feels that he's been chosen so that he could bring his wife back to life. What Cicada cannot come to grips with is that in transferring the life force from another human, means that that individual must die.

This continues to eat at his conscience until he discovers the Flash (alter ego Wally West) whom, with a lightning bolt across his chest and super speed, Cicada comes to see as a brother touched by the same power. Cicada witnesses the Flash save people who would have certainly been killed if the Scarlet Speedster had not intervened and, within his twisted logic, he sees this as the ideal justification to finish the job that fate had started. Before you send me little notes, Wally West was struck by a blast of anti-matter and not lightning but the description above is how the Flash is seen in the Cicada's eyes.
