Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hurricane Floyd caused 75 deaths in USA in 1999, but where did it first cause havoc with winds of 155 mph (249 kmh) and waves up to 50 ft (15 m) in height?

Answer: Bahamas

1999s Hurricane Floyd was the cause of the fourth largest evacuation in American history when 2.6 million residents were ordered to leave their homes, and the deadliest since 1972s Hurricane Agnes.
The hurricane first struck the Bahamas on September 13th with an intensity just below a category five hurricane, making landfall on Eleuthera and Abaco islands.
On September 16th, the hurricane made landfall in USA at Cape Fear, North Carolina, as a category two hurricane, with reduced wind speeds of 105 mph (169 kmh) before weakening and passing through Virginia, the states of New England and Atlantic Canada.
In total, Hurricane Floyd was responsible for 75 deaths in USA and one in the Bahamas.
2. The winners of the annual college football game between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Golden Gophers receive Floyd of Rosedale, a trophy in the shape of which animal?

Answer: Pig

Following a very physical game, full of late tackles, in 1934, the mood for the 1935 rematch was lightened when Minnesota Governor Floyd Olson sent a telegram to his Iowa counterpart, Clyde L. Herring in which he wagered a Minnesota prize hog against an Iowa prize hog on the result of the game, with the stipulation that the loser must deliver the hog in person to the winner.
Minnesota won 13-6 and Governor Herring obtained a prize winning pig, named Floyd from Rosedale Farms of Fort Dodge, Iowa and personally walked him into Governor Olson's carpeted office.
Floyd's life as a celebrity wasn't over though as he was then offered as first prize in an essay writing competition organised by Governor Olson and won by a 14 year old boy. He eventually retired to a family farm, where he died of cholera, just eight months after being a football prize.
Eager to continue the tradition, but now aware of the problems involved when offering a live pig as a prize, the two schools decided on a statue of Floyd as a prize and this 44 kg (98 lb) trophy has been played for every year since.
3. Floyd Mayweather Jr. won an Olympic bronze medal in 1996 in which sport?

Answer: Boxing

Not only did Mayweather Jr. win an Olympic medal, he also went on to have a hugely successful professional career, retiring with a record of 50 wins and no losses.
He was also World Boxing Council champion in five different weight classes, super featherweight, lightweight, super lightweight, welterweight and light middleweight as well as World Boxing Association super welterweight and super light middleweight champion and welterweight champion with the World Boxing Organisation and the International Boxing Federation.
Along the way he defeated some of the most respected names in boxing, such as Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Manny Pacquiao and Connor McGregor.
Following his retirement in 2017, he was worked as a boxing promoter.
4. Between 1985 and 2001, Keith Floyd was a regular on UK TV in what capacity?

Answer: Cook

Keith Floyd was insistent that he was a cook and not a chef; he had received no formal culinary training at all, he merely possessed a love for food, in particular seafood and possibly an even greater love for wine, as the majority of his shows had him demonstrating his kitchen skills while drinking a fine wine.
He was very critical of modern TV chefs for promoting themselves over the food, which for him was all important, and his easy going style won him many fans, beginning with his first TV show, "Floyd On Fish" (1985).
Floyd died of a heart attack in 2009, aged 65, after suffering with ill health for some years. Following his death, celebrity chefs paid tribute, with Anthony Worral Thompson saying, "I think all of us modern TV chefs owe a living to him" and Marco Pierre White declaring, "If you look at TV chefs today they don't have his magic."
Rick Stein called Floyd a "red wine drinking hero" and Jamie Oliver simply described him as "the best".
5. The vocalist and guitarist for Green Day has a favourite guitar, which he has named Floyd. Who is this musician?

Answer: Billie Joe Armstrong

Billie Joe Armstrong's "Floyd" is a Gibson Les Paul Junior 1956 Sunburst, and has been described in various interviews with Armstrong as his favourite guitar due to it being completely different to the Fender guitars that he had been playing up to the point he first played it in 2000.
He will admit a 1956 Les Paul Custom Black Beauty that he also owns comes a close second to Floyd, but it is the sounds of Floyd that can be heard on the album that catapulted Green Day into the big leagues, 2004s "American Idiot".
6. The family motto of the Floyd Baronetcy in UK is "Patiens Pulveris Atque Solis". What does this translate to?

Answer: Patient Of Dust And Sun

The Floyd Baronetcy was created in 1816 for General John Floyd, second-in-command in the final battle of the fourth Anglo Mysore War, the Siege of Seringapatam in 1799.
Floyd was also son in law to UK Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel and was a baronet for just two years before his death, when the title passed to his son, Sir Henry Floyd.
On 1st April 1975, Giles Henry Charles Floyd became the seventh person to hold the title, Sir Floyd of Chearsley Hill, Bucks.
A baronet is viewed as belonging to the lesser nobility, but should always be addressed as "sir" and unlike knighthoods, which only apply to the person on which they are bestowed, a baronetcy is hereditarily passed on.
7. Floyd Pepper is the bass player for which well known band?

Answer: Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem

Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem consist of Dr Teeth on vocals and keyboards, Floyd Pepper on bass, Janice on guitar, Zoot on saxophone and possibly their best known member, Animal, on drums.
They are the house band of the Muppet franchise, first appearing in 1975. In addition to releasing their own albums, they have appeared with John Denver on the 1979 album, "John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together", and had their track "Far Away From You" included on the 2001 album, "The International Punk Rock Box Set", an album which also included bands such as Hybrid Mutants, the Pink Torpedoes and Anal Thunder! Strange days indeed!
More recently, the band recorded "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" in 2016 with Jack White.
8. Floyd's Bluff is a hill in southern Sioux City, Iowa that is named for Sergeant Charles Floyd, remembered for his involvement in which event in American history?

Answer: The Lewis and Clark Expedition

In 1803, for the princely sum of $15 million, USA, under President Thomas Jefferson bought the territory of Louisiana from Napoleon and ended French rule over the area.
The territory, which now makes up the states of Louisiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Oklahoma along with most of Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Minnesota needed exploring and mapping, and this was the purpose of the expedition headed by Captain Meriwether Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark, which lasted three years from 1803 to 1806.
One of the first people to enlist on this journey through uncharted lands was Sergeant Charles Floyd, who in 1804 became the first and only member of the group to die during the expedition; his final resting place is now marked by the Sergeant Floyd Monument.
9. Bank robber and "Public Enemy Number One", Pretty Boy Floyd was killed by the FBI on October 22nd, 1934. What were "Pretty Boy's" actual first names?

Answer: Charles Arthur

Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy" Floyd earned his nickname for the way he used to dress while working in the oil fields, along with his rosy red complexion. He apparently hated the moniker, but it stuck and was how he was known during his reign as a bank robber in Oklahoma and neighbouring states.
Over 12 years, he robbed as many as 30 banks, once doing two in a single day, at Paden and Castle, Oklahoma in 1931; he also killed ten men, which led to him being dubbed "Public Enemy Number One" after the capture and death of previous "number one", John Dillinger.
Floyd is seen by many as a folk hero, and over 10,000 people came to the funeral home in which his body was held to pay their respects and his funeral in Sallisaw, Oklahoma was attended by over 20,000 people.
10. Which progressive rock band released the mega selling album, "The Dark Side Of The Moon" in 1973?

Answer: Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd formed in 1965 and although their first seven albums all brought the band top ten success in the UK album chart, including a number one with "Atom Heart Mother" (1970), it was with "The Dark Side Of The Moon" (1973) that they first achieved global success.
It is one of the most critically acclaimed albums ever released, its influences still felt 50 years after its release, yet surprisingly it was never a number one album in UK, peaking at number two.
