Question 1 of 10
1. The First Mate of a small cargo ship has been murdered in his bunk. The Captain tells you he can vouch for all of his crew members with the exception of four men recently signed on board. All four claim to have had extensive seagoing experience. According to their statements:
Sailor A: "I was asleep in my cabin after finishing a 12 hour watch astern. Didn't hear a thing."
Sailor B: "I was busy cleanin' the bathroom at the front of the ship. Don't know nothin'."
Sailor C: "I was below deck securin' cargo in the hold. Didn't even know the guy."
Sailor D: "I was over on the starboard side swabbin' the deck, mindin' my own business."

Based solely on these statements, which sailor would you bring in for further questioning?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. The Crime: A priceless "Jorge Palousse" painting stolen from the Des Moines Art Institute on April 17th..

The Alibis: Raul Mendez, a Spanish securities banker, claimed he was in Mexico City at the time of the robbery, negotiating an important Spanish-Mexican securities transaction.
Paul Ferris, a self-made American architect, who stated he spent the week in Mali, supervising new construction at no charge to villages ravaged by floods.
Helmut Siegfried's (a jet-setting German playboy) passport placed him in Poland, France, Belgium, and Scotland during the week of the robbery, as "I have girlfriends in those countries, so I want to become fluent in Polish, French, Belgian, and Gaelic. It will impress them, you know."
Elenore Bouchant, a wealthy French widow, tells you she spent the time vacationing with her sister in Dublin. "Oui, oui, the countryside is so green this time of year, mon cheri."

The Scoop: All four suspects have at least one "Jorge Palousse" in their private collections.

With the information from these statements, who is the first suspect you question?
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. It is Friday afternoon, and you are investigating the murder of a wealthy recluse at his home. The body was discovered by a neighbor, who noticed the front door was open. On the porch you see bundles of unopened mail, Tuesday's newspaper, a UPS package notice, and several bottles of warm milk. The coroner on the scene believes the recluse had been dead for several days. Who is your prime suspect? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. The crime: Murder of an important British businessman, approximately 12:30 p.m.

The suspects statements include:

Rodney: "I spent the day at the 'BL', researching for my book on Guy Fawkes. Left at 4:00 p.m.. He was never hanged, y'know."
George: "I was at the 'Black Lion' gettin' lagged. Got there when it opened, didn't leave till after 6:00 at night. Barmaid will tell ya."
Teddy: "I'm a political reporter for the 'Mirror'. Covered the Queen's speech at the British House of Commons. Didn't adjourn until 5:00 p.m."
Samuel: "From 11:30 in the morning to 1:00, I was at the chip shop with me mates for a bit of nosh and plonk. Played some draughts as well."

Whose statement do you find suspicious?
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. You hear on the police scanner that an armored truck had just been robbed in broad daylight. To complicate the situation even more, the guards on board the truck claim they were held up by two policemen! At the scene, you question the four guards, and get the following statements:
Driver: "I couldn't believe it! They both looked like real cops! Uniforms, sunglasses, badges. Even the car looked like a cop car."
Guard #2: "I was in the back with the money, so I didn't get a good look at the car, but the guns looked real enough! The blond cop who covered us was tall, over six feet, about 220 pounds."
Guard #3: "I was in the back also. I even heard the siren. I thought maybe we were speeding. I'm pretty sure the other cop was shorter, and had dark hair."
Guard #4: "I was up front in the passenger seat, so I got a good look. Yeah, the shorter cop had dark hair, a mustache, and brown eyes. He's the one who loaded up the cash."

After reviewing the statements, you're sure at least one of the guards was an accomplice. Whom do you first arrest?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. You have been tailing Ricardo Fermi, the infamous international jewelry thief (and master of disguise) for several months, and you have finally received a reliable tip that Fermi will be dining tonight at the exclusive 24-table Parisian restaurant, "Le Fontainebleau". The maitre d' has informed you that he personally knows 20 of the 24 parties who have made reservations for that evening, but has no knowledge of the remaining four:
Saito Tagaki, a Japanese businessman.
Professor Harold Higgens, a British historian.
Doctor Ram Ratan, a Hindu Brahman (priest).
Michael O'Sullivan, an Irish artist.
You later learn from the maitre d' that, by coincidence, all four ordered the specialty of the house, the world-famous "Boeuf Bourguignon". You immediately order one of the four in for questioning. Who is your suspect?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. In honor of Thomas Jefferson's birthday, the "Always Lucky" casino had on display in the main Hotel lobby a large glass case showcasing 250,000 new and uncirculated two dollar bills. The showcase was on display for 24 hours. It was later discovered that 25,000 of the bills were missing. Your four primary suspects include:
The Chief of Security, who "maintained constant surveillance" throughout the event. He also carried a key to the case.
The Main Cage Supervisor, who verified the number of bills by "personally hand-counting them" the day before the event.
The Chief Financial Officer, who supervised the "loan of the bills from the bank". The first to discover the discrepancy of the count, he also had a key to the showcase.
The Casino Promotions Director, responsible for "staging the event in the Hotel lobby", which just happened to be away from the surveillance cameras.

After questioning, which employee do you detain?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. You are questioning suspects in regard to the assassination attempt by a sniper on the Governor of Idaho, who was visiting the resort city of Coeur d'Alene, in the state's northern Panhandle. The attempt occurred at 11:00 a.m.
According to the statements:

Rocco: "I was white-water rafting on the Snake River, near McCall. Halfway down the state. Nowhere near the man."
Bubba: "Was workin' a contract job at the Potlatch plant outside of Lewiston. Almost two hours away. Check with the Foreman."
Gino: "Yeah, I was in town, but not at 11:00. Comin' back from a family reunion in Boise, took the 10:15 a.m. flight to Spokane, WA. Over an hour in the air. Call the airport."
Louie: "I got stuck at the border comin' home from visitin' Canada. Couldn't find my passport, took an hour to clear things up. Rolled into town around noon. Give the Border Patrol a call."

Based on the statements alone, without any additional verification, whom do you detain?
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Naples' wealthiest wine-maker has been murdered, and evidence of poison was found in his nightly glass of wine. You suspect four employees.
On the evening in question:
The Head Buyer claimed he drove all night to Brindisi, on the opposite coast of Italy, to negotiate a purchase of Negroamaro grapes.
The Chief Wine Taster stated he was sleeping off his hangover after working a 12-hour shift.
The Lead Cask Maker revealed he worked the night shift at the warehouse, cutting oak chips for the wine barrels.
The Senior Secretary said she spent her day off attending the "Maggio dei Monumenti", a cultural event in Naples.

After hearing these alibis, who is your suspect?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Someone has tunneled into the vault of the Third National Bank over the Fourth of July weekend, making off with a haul of over a million dollars. The job's M.O. fits four suspects, but evidence indicates two were working together.

'Drillbit' Dan: "Me and the wife were hunting up in Canada. We got a beautiful bear-skin rug and two gorgeous white rabbit-fur muffs to prove it."
'Fusebox' Frankie: "I was watching the fireworks at Lake Tahoe. Even got me a comp from one of the casinos to see the show from a private boat out on the lake."
Terry 'the Tunnel': "I took the family to Columbus, Ohio, for the "Red, White and Boom" fireworks display. Amazing! Over 500,000 people were there."
'Safecracker Sammy': "Being an amateur stargazer, I spent the weekend in Alaska. Trust me, the best sky in the world! The stars seemed close enough to touch!"

Based on these alibis, which two do you arrest?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The First Mate of a small cargo ship has been murdered in his bunk. The Captain tells you he can vouch for all of his crew members with the exception of four men recently signed on board. All four claim to have had extensive seagoing experience. According to their statements: Sailor A: "I was asleep in my cabin after finishing a 12 hour watch astern. Didn't hear a thing." Sailor B: "I was busy cleanin' the bathroom at the front of the ship. Don't know nothin'." Sailor C: "I was below deck securin' cargo in the hold. Didn't even know the guy." Sailor D: "I was over on the starboard side swabbin' the deck, mindin' my own business." Based solely on these statements, which sailor would you bring in for further questioning?

Answer: Sailor B

If Sailor B had the seagoing experience he claimed he had, he would not have used the term the 'bathroom', but rather the 'head'. He would have also called the 'front' of the ship the 'bow' or 'forward'.
It will impress them, you know." Elenore Bouchant, a wealthy French widow, tells you she spent the time vacationing with her sister in Dublin. "Oui, oui, the countryside is so green this time of year, mon cheri." The Scoop: All four suspects have at least one "Jorge Palousse" in their private collections. With the information from these statements, who is the first suspect you question?

Answer: Helmut Siegfried

As there is no such thing as a "Belgian" language, you suspect Helmut is lying, and his passport forged. The two official languages of Belgium are French and Dutch.

Answer: The newspaper delivery person

It would make sense to question the newspaper delivery person. The fact that there was not a Wednesday or Thursday paper delivered indicates that either he or she knew there was no one at home (alive) to read them.
4. The crime: Murder of an important British businessman, approximately 12:30 p.m. The suspects statements include: Rodney: "I spent the day at the 'BL', researching for my book on Guy Fawkes. Left at 4:00 p.m.. He was never hanged, y'know." George: "I was at the 'Black Lion' gettin' lagged. Got there when it opened, didn't leave till after 6:00 at night. Barmaid will tell ya." Teddy: "I'm a political reporter for the 'Mirror'. Covered the Queen's speech at the British House of Commons. Didn't adjourn until 5:00 p.m." Samuel: "From 11:30 in the morning to 1:00, I was at the chip shop with me mates for a bit of nosh and plonk. Played some draughts as well." Whose statement do you find suspicious?

Answer: Teddy's

As it is a strict British tradition that the current monarch may never enter the House of Commons, the Queen would never deliver a speech there. It would therefore be impossible for Teddy to report it.
5. You hear on the police scanner that an armored truck had just been robbed in broad daylight. To complicate the situation even more, the guards on board the truck claim they were held up by two policemen! At the scene, you question the four guards, and get the following statements: Driver: "I couldn't believe it! They both looked like real cops! Uniforms, sunglasses, badges. Even the car looked like a cop car." Guard #2: "I was in the back with the money, so I didn't get a good look at the car, but the guns looked real enough! The blond cop who covered us was tall, over six feet, about 220 pounds." Guard #3: "I was in the back also. I even heard the siren. I thought maybe we were speeding. I'm pretty sure the other cop was shorter, and had dark hair." Guard #4: "I was up front in the passenger seat, so I got a good look. Yeah, the shorter cop had dark hair, a mustache, and brown eyes. He's the one who loaded up the cash." After reviewing the statements, you're sure at least one of the guards was an accomplice. Whom do you first arrest?

Answer: Guard #4

The driver of the truck had mentioned earlier that both "cops" wore sunglasses. Therefore, there would be no way that guard #4 would know one of them had brown eyes unless he had known them before the robbery.
6. You have been tailing Ricardo Fermi, the infamous international jewelry thief (and master of disguise) for several months, and you have finally received a reliable tip that Fermi will be dining tonight at the exclusive 24-table Parisian restaurant, "Le Fontainebleau". The maitre d' has informed you that he personally knows 20 of the 24 parties who have made reservations for that evening, but has no knowledge of the remaining four: Saito Tagaki, a Japanese businessman.

Answer: Doctor Ratan

"Boeuf" is the French word for beef. The Hindu religion regards beef as a taboo food, since the cow is held sacred. This being the case, it would be highly unlikely that a true Hindu Brahman would purposely order a beef dish for dinner.
Your four primary suspects include: The Chief of Security, who "maintained constant surveillance" throughout the event.

Answer: The Main Cage Supervisor

There are 86,400 seconds in a 24 hour "day". Even if the Cage Supervisor could maintain a one bill per second count, it would still take almost three days to "hand-count" 250,000 bills.
8. You are questioning suspects in regard to the assassination attempt by a sniper on the Governor of Idaho, who was visiting the resort city of Coeur d'Alene, in the state's northern Panhandle. The attempt occurred at 11:00 a.m. According to the statements: Rocco: "I was white-water rafting on the Snake River, near McCall. Halfway down the state. Nowhere near the man." Bubba: "Was workin' a contract job at the Potlatch plant outside of Lewiston. Almost two hours away. Check with the Foreman." Gino: "Yeah, I was in town, but not at 11:00. Comin' back from a family reunion in Boise, took the 10:15 a.m. flight to Spokane, WA. Over an hour in the air. Call the airport." Louie: "I got stuck at the border comin' home from visitin' Canada. Couldn't find my passport, took an hour to clear things up. Rolled into town around noon. Give the Border Patrol a call." Based on the statements alone, without any additional verification, whom do you detain?

Answer: Gino

Although Boise (the capital of Idaho) is almost 400 miles directly south of Coeur d'Alene, it is not in the same time zone. The southern half of the state operates under Mountain Standard Time, while the northern portion (including Coeur d'Alene) is in the Pacific Time Zone. If Gino left Boise at 10:15 a.m. for the hour flight, he would arrive in Spokane at almost the same time he left, giving him plenty of time for the 20 minute drive to Coeur d'Alene.
9. Naples' wealthiest wine-maker has been murdered, and evidence of poison was found in his nightly glass of wine. You suspect four employees. On the evening in question: The Head Buyer claimed he drove all night to Brindisi, on the opposite coast of Italy, to negotiate a purchase of Negroamaro grapes.

Answer: The Chief Wine Taster

Since an experienced and professional wine-taster does not actually drink the wine he or she is tasting (the wine is spit out after sampling), there is no reason for the Chief Wine Taster to have a hangover because of his long shift.
We got a beautiful bear-skin rug and two gorgeous white rabbit-fur muffs to prove it." 'Fusebox' Frankie: "I was watching the fireworks at Lake Tahoe. Even got me a comp from one of the casinos to see the show from a private boat out on the lake." Terry 'the Tunnel': "I took the family to Columbus, Ohio, for the "Red, White and Boom" fireworks display. Amazing! Over 500,000 people were there." 'Safecracker Sammy': "Being an amateur stargazer, I spent the weekend in Alaska. Trust me, the best sky in the world! The stars seemed close enough to touch!" Based on these alibis, which two do you arrest?

Answer: Dan and Sammy

If it is summertime in the United States, it is summertime in Canada as well. The rabbit furs should be brown, not white. Also, July would be a terrible month for stargazing in Alaska. There is approximately 20 hours of average daylight during that time of year, depending on which area one is in. It would be several more months before it got dark enough to see any stars with clarity.
