Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which state are these National Forests: Mount Baker - Snoqualmie, Gifford Pinchot, Olympic?

Answer: Washington

The common theme here is mountains. The Olympic mountains, and the Cascades. The Olympics are upthrust, the Cascades are volcanic. Mt. Baker erupted about 200 years ago. The Gifford Pinchot, one of the first National Forests, located between Mt. Rainier National Park and Mt. Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument, also includes the stratovolcano Mt. Adams.
2. What state are these National Forests in: Deschutes, Willamette, Mt. Hood?

Answer: Oregon

The common theme here is rivers. The Deschutes begins at Little Lava lake and drains the east side of the Oregon Cascades, flowing north through some spectacular canyons and emptying into the mighty Columbia River. The Willamette flows north draining the west side of the Cascades as well as the east side of the Oregon Coastal Range, and again flowing into the mighty Columbia. Mt. Hood, of course, is the headwater of the Hood River, which also flows into the Columbia.
3. Six Rivers, Sequoia, Shasta-Trinity - these are all National Forests in what state?

Answer: California

The theme here is BIG! The town of Willow Creek sits amidst the Six Rivers National Forest and is home to BIG FOOT (Sasquatch). The world's biggest trees are in Sequoia National Forest, and the big volcano, Mt. Shasta towers above the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.
4. The National Forests Arapaho-Roosevelt, Pike-San Isabel, and San Juan are located in what state?

Answer: Colorado

Mountains, mountains, mountains. The Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forest includes lands on both sides of the Continental Divide in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. The Pike-San Isabel National Forest is famous for its 14,000 foot peaks in the Collegiate Mountain Range.

In the San Juan National Forest we find the climbers' paradise, the Needle Mountains, as well as archeological ruins of the Anasazi.
5. What state is home to these National Forests: Bitterroot, Flathead, Kootenai?

Answer: Montana

Oh that wild wilderness. The Bitterroot National Forest has the largest expanse of continuous pristine wilderness in the lower 48 states, including the Selway, Bitterroot, the Anaconda-Pintler, and the Frank Church-River of No Return. The Flathead National Forest has the Mission Mountains, Great Bear, and Bob Marshall Wildernesses, as well as the whitewater rafters' dream, The Flathead Wild and Scenic River.

In the heart of the Kootenai National Forest is the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness with beautiful majestic mountains towering over the surroundings.
6. Ashley, Dixie, Wasatch-Cache are National Forests in which state?

Answer: Utah

Old, old, old. The Ashley National Forest is one of the richest fossil-finding areas in the West. In the Dixie National Forest one can explore the age of the earth, stand on Hell's Backbone Bridge and gaze into Death Hollow. The Wasatch-Cache National Forset is home to the Jardine Juniper, 1500 years old and reputedly the oldest living tree in the Rockies.
7. The National Forests of Nez Perce, Payette, and Salmon-Challis are in which state?

Answer: Idaho

Fishing or floating. The rugged canyons of the Salmon River in Nez Perce National Forest are perfect for both. Fish abound in the alpine lakes of the Salmon-Chase National Forest, as well as the Yankee Fork of the Salmon River.
8. I visited the National Forests, Coronado, Kaibab, and Tonto when I was visiting my aunt in which state?

Beat the heat. The twelve mountain ranges of the Coronado National Forest range in height from 2400 feet to 10,500 feet, the air really is cooler up there. The Kaibab National Forest is part of the largest contiguous poderosa pine forest in the U.S. (ah, shade!). The six reservoirs along the Salt and Verde Rivers in the Tonto National Forest attract many visitors for a cooling dip.
9. The Sumter National Forest and the Francis Marion National Forest are where?

Answer: South Carolina

Both the Sumter National Forest and the Francis Marion National Forest are named after Revolutionary War Generals. Both of these National Forests offer some of the best hunting and fishing available in South Carolina, as well as wonderful opportunites for white water rafters and kayakers.
10. Which state is home to the Chattahoochee National Forest and the Oconee National Forest?
