Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Severn

Answer: Gloucester

The Severn is the longest river in England and Wales. It is 220miles (354km) long from Ceredigion in Wales to the Bristol Channel. Gloucester is the largest town by population it runs through - 125,000 at the 2011.
2. Thames

Answer: London

The Thames is 215 miles (346km) in length. It rises in Gloucestershire and flows through eight counties, as well as Greater London, to the North Sea. The 2011 Census gave the population as 8.2 million.
3. Trent

Answer: Nottingham

The Trent is 185 miles (297km) long. Its source is a hill called Biddulph Moor in Staffordshire and it flows eastwards to the North Sea. At the 2011 Census, the population of Nottingham was about 314,000.
4. Great Ouse

Answer: Milton Keynes

The Great Ouse is 143 miles (230km) long with several sources near the village of Syresham in Northamptonshire. It flows to The Wash at King's Lynn. The largest town along its course is Milton Keynes, with a population at the 2011 Census of about 248,000.
5. Wye

Answer: Hereford

For much of its 134 miles (215km) length, the Wye forms the border between England and Wales. The source is in Wales and it enters the Severn Estuary near Chepstow. Hereford is the largest settlement, with a population of about 59,000 at the 2011 Census.
6. Tay

Answer: Perth

The Tay is Scotland's longest river at 117 miles (188km). Starting off in the mountains of western Scotland, it flows east and then south-east to the Firth of Tay on the east coast. Perth has a population of about 58,000. Note: in case you are wondering why I did not suggest Dundee, which has a larger population, I plead quiz-writers' licence in that Dundee is on the Tay estuary and the river does not actually flow through it.
7. Clyde

Answer: Glasgow

The River Clyde is 109 miles (176km) long and flows from southern Lanarkshire to the Firth of Clyde on the west coast. Glasgow is Scotland's most populated city with 600,000 residents in 2015 according to Scottish government figures.
8. Spey

Answer: Aviemore

Flowing from Loch Spey in the Scottish Highlands, the river is 107 miles (172k) long and flows north-easterly to the Moray Firth. Aviemore had a population of 2,800 at the 2011 Census. It is one of Scotland's most important winter sports towns.
9. Nene

Answer: Northampton

The Nene has three sources in Northamptonshire and is 100 miles (161k) long. It flows north-easterly into The Wash on the North Sea. The city of Northampton had a population of about 212,000 according to the 2011 Census.
10. Tweed

Answer: Berwick

The Tweed flows for 96 miles (155km) from Scotland across the border to England and on to the North Sea. Berwick-upon-Tweed had a population of about 13,000 at the 2011 Census. It is most northerly town in England.
