Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The fourth longest river in the UK flows through five counties--Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk--on its way to the North Sea. Name this river.

Answer: Great Ouse

The Great Ouse is navigable from Bedford. It reaches the sea as it flows into The Wash at the ancient town of King's Lynn,
2. On which river was the world's second largest flood barrier opened in 1982 to protect one of Great Britain's great cities?

Answer: Thames

Spanning the River Thames between Newham on the north bank and Greenwich on the south, the barrier protects London from the risk of flooding in the event of a very high tide.
3. As it flows through Oxford, the Thames, one of Great Britain's major rivers, is known by a different name. What is this name?

Answer: Isis

The Oxford University rowing squad train on the Isis during their preparations for the world famous Boat Race. They have competed in this race with Cambridge University every year since 1856 (with gaps for the two World Wars).
4. Which two British rivers are homonyms of adjacent letters of the alphabet?

Answer: Exe Wye

The Exe rises in Somerset, but flows through Devon to reach the English Channel at Exmouth. The Wye rises in the Welsh mountains, and in some sections forms the border between England and Wales before reaching the Severn Estuary. It passes through the ancient market town of Hay-on-Wye, famous for its many bookshops (reputedly one bookshop for every 60 members of its population).
5. On 28th December 1879, seventy five people lost their lives when the rail bridge between Dundee and Wormit collapsed in a storm as a train was passing over it. In which river did the victims drown?

Answer: Firth of Tay

Rising in the Highlands, close to the west coast of Scotland, it has several different names until it reaches Loch Tay. The Tay flows right across central Scotland through the fair city of Perth, and becomes tidal, hence the name the Firth of Tay, as it reaches the east coast.
6. On which British river do surfers gather in the spring to ride a tidal bore upstream, made possible because of the estuary of this river? It has the second highest tidal range in the world (about 15 metres).

Answer: Severn

Although actively discouraged by the river authorities, surfing the Severn Bore has been going on since at least 1955. The bore, a tidal phenomenon, occurs when flood tides form a tidal wave which travels upstream against the current of the river.
7. Which river, rising within a few miles of the source of the Clyde and Annan Rivers, forms the border between Scotland and England in its lower reaches before reaching the sea at Berwick?

Answer: Tweed

Berwick-upon-Tweed is an old market town, which during its history had been in Scottish hands as well as English. Although the town has been English since the early 18th century, its football and rugby teams nevertheless play in the Scottish Leagues.
8. Rising in Staffordshire, this major British river flows through three towns which take its name: Stoke-on-___, Burton upon ___ and Newark-on-___. This river also flows through the city most closely associated with Robin Hood. Name it.

Answer: Trent

The Trent is very unusual compared to other British rivers, since for about half of its length it flows northwards (most others flow east, west or south). Like the Severn, it has a tidal bore.
9. Over which British river can you cross from West Lothian into Fife on one of two side-by-side bridges? One is a rail bridge opened in 1890 and the other is a road bridge opened in 1964.

Answer: Forth

The bridges go from South Queensferry, just north of Edinburgh, to North Queensferry (in the "Kingdom" of Fife). A newer paint has been developed, which means that the old adage that "as soon as you finish painting the Forth Rail Bridge you start all over again" is no longer true.
10. Which British river, rising in the Brecon Beacons, reaches the sea just after it passes the Millennium Stadium? Its name is also what the English call Welshmen.

Answer: Taff

The Taff gives rise to the nickname of Taff or Taffy for Welshmen. It flows through Cardiff before it reaches the Severn Estuary and the Irish Sea.
