Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We start our trip in Perth, and will begin by visiting the large park that overlooks the city. What is its name?

Answer: King's Park

Kings Park covers around 400 hectares and is located on Mount Eliza overlooking the city and the Swan River.
2. From Perth, we will drive east for almost 600 kilometres to the City of Kalgoorlie. Kalgoorlie is famous for the mining of what?

Answer: Gold

Kalgoorlie is a beautiful city with wide streets designed to allow camel trains to turn in them. Gold was first discovered near Kalgoorlie in 1893, and has developed today to the existence of the "Super Pit" - almost 300 metres deep, over a kilometre wide and 4 km long. Kalgoorlie owes its survival to the dream of one man, CY O'Connor, who engineered the water pipeline from Perth to Kalgoorlie. Prior to the pipeline, water was more precious than gold, and many early miners died of typhoid because of water shortage.
3. From Kalgoorlie, we drive south to Esperance, a large coastal town. Approximately how far is it from Kalgoorlie?

Answer: 400 km

The drive between Kalgoorlie and Esperance is almost 400 kilometres, and after you leave Norseman, there are only a few tiny villages.
Esperance is noted for its Pink Lake, its beautiful beaches, and three National Parks in close proximity.
4. From Esperance, we travel to Albany, via Highway 1, a distance of about 480 km. Which of the following towns will we not pass through?

Answer: Williams

Williams is located on the Albany Highway, about half way between Perth and Albany.
Until recently, Ravensthorpe was a developing mining town, but economic downturn saw the closure of the mine, and a return to a predominantly farming economy.
5. WA has its share of "Big Things". Which of the following is NOT in Western Australia?

Answer: The Big Gumboot

The Big Gumboot is in Tully, Queensland.
The Big Wool Wagon is in Kojonup and the bales bear the names of actual local farms.
The Big Ram is in Wagin, also in the Great Southern, while WA's Big Orange is in the fruit growing district of Harvey. There is also at least one other Big Orange in South Australia, and a Big Ram in New South Wales.
6. From Albany, we head north, and decide to stop at Kojonup for lunch. We visit a cafe at the Kodja Place, the local visitor and interpretive centre. There we learn that Kojonup was named after the kodja, which in the local Indigenous language Noongar, means what?

Answer: Stone axe

In Noongar language, the suffix "up" means "place of", therefore Kojonup is the "place of the stone axe", or where local Noongars came to get stone to make their axes.
7. Heading north east from Kojonup, we next visit Hyden, home of Wave Rock, a 14 metre high, and 110 metre long rock sculptured by nature into a giant wave. Hyden has another attraction that I found even more interesting than the rock. What is it?

Answer: The Lace Place

The Lace Place is a museum dedicated to lace and clothing, with more than 2000 pieces on display.
The Tin Horse Highway is a stretch of road near the town of Kulin, decorated with large drums imaginatively turned into horses in various poses, while the Dog Cemetery is at Corrigin, closer to Perth.
The Camera Museum is at Meckering, home to WA's worst earthquake in 1968.
8. OK, now we are back in Perth, and want to taste some Western Australian wine. Which of the following is NOT a wine region of Western Australia?

Answer: Hunter Valley

Hunter Valley is a major wine region in New South Wales.
Mount Barker is around 60 kilometres north of Albany, while Margaret River is a large coastal town almost 300 kilometres south of Perth.
The Swan Valley is on the edge of Perth, and has many wineries and other attractions.
9. I would like to show you some dolphins, and there are several places we could visit to do this. Which of the following places would we NOT visit to do this?

Answer: Yalgoo

Yalgoo is inland, and far better known for its gold mining history.
Bunbury and Rockingham run dolphin discovery tours and cruises.
10. Finally, we are going to fly to the last town on our itinerary. Located about two thousand kilometres north of Perth, this town has wonderful beaches, good fishing, the opportunity to ride a camel along a beach, as well as an incredibly colourful history. It is, of course _____?

Answer: Broome

Broome is located in the Kimberley region of WA: the other towns are in the Pilbara.
Broome's history includes pearling, being bombed during the Second World War, and an incredibly rich Indigenous history.
