Answer: Rabat and Maseru

Rabat and Maseru are 4,894 miles apart, which is almost 1,000 miles more than the radius of the Earth!

Algiers and Maputo are 4,713 miles apart. Tunis and Pretoria are 4,455 miles apart. Dakar and Mogadishu are 4,364 miles apart.
2. Our beloved crow is quite tired after the first flight, so now it's time for a much shorter voyage. A flight between which two African capitals would be the shortest for our crow?

Answer: Brazzaville and Kinshasa

The centers of Brazzaville and Kinshasa lie only 5.5 miles apart. The two cities are separated by the Congo River and together are home to about 12 million people.

Conakry and Freetown are 79 miles apart. Mbabane and Maputo are 94 miles apart. Lome and Porto-Novo are 99 miles apart.
3. With the two extremes out of the crow's way, it's time for something completely different. Our thirsty crow takes off from Rabat flying straight towards Djibouti, Djibouti. How many times does the crow cross the Nile River?

Answer: 3

The crow would cross the Nile river a total of three times. All three crossings occur within the space of about 270 miles of flight over northern Sudan, where the Nile transitions from flowing north, to southwest, and back to north.
4. Our globetrotter crow would now like to take a day trip to Asia from the city of Djibouti in Djibouti. What is the nearest Asian capital city to Djibouti?

Answer: Sana'a

From Djibouti, it's a short 17 mile (approximately) trip over the Bab-el-Mandeb which is the narrowest part of the Red Sea. Over the water lies the country of Yemen and away from the coast is Yemen's capital of Sana'a.
5. After getting its fill of Atlantic waters, our squeaky-clean crow now decides to fly from Windhoek to Freetown. Which countries will the crow visit?

Answer: Namibia and Sierra Leone

Windhoek is the capital of Namibia and Freetown is the capital of Sierra Leone. Starting from Namibia, the crow would fly over the Atlantic Ocean. The flight path would come within about 25 miles of touching Angola, and within about 10 miles of touching Liberia. The crow would then arrive in Sierra Leone.
6. Our adventurous crow now journeys from Freetown to Kigali. Along the way, it flies directly over an island which is home to the capital of a mainland African country. However, this island capital is actually closer to the mainland shores of two other countries than it is to its own mainland region. Which capital is it?

Answer: Malabo

Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, lies on Bioko Island in the Gulf of Guinea. Malabo itself actually lies closer to the shores of both Cameroon (27 miles) and Nigeria (64 miles) than to the mainland portion of Equatorial Guinea (120 miles).
7. Perched on a hotel in Kigali, our crow decides to see some real sights. It knows eight capital destinations that would have it fly directly over Lake Tanganyika. The first seven are Gaborone, Pretoria, Maseru, Mbabane, Maputo, Lusaka, and Harare. Which is the eighth capital?

Answer: Windhoek

A flight from Kigali to Windhoek would take the crow over the northern section of Lake Tanganyika. The lake is the world's second deepest lake (4,708 feet).
8. Our frequent flier crow next finds himself in Pretoria. From here, the crow can easily fly to four other African capitals within a 300 mile radius. However, Pretoria is not quite unique in this regard. What is the only other African capital that has four other capitals within a 300 mile radius around it?

Answer: Bissau

Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau, is within 300 miles of Dakar, Banjul, Conakry, and Freetown.

Conakry is within 300 miles of Bissau, Freetown, and Monrovia. Lome is only within 300 miles of Accra and Porto-Novo. Mbabane is only within 300 miles of Pretoria and Maputo.
9. From Pretoria, our feathered friend flies directly to the most centrally-located capital in Africa. This capital is no more than 2,513 miles from all other mainland African capitals. Which capital city is it?

Answer: Yaounde

Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon, is the most centrally-located in relation to all the other capital cities. The furthest capital from Yaounde is Maseru, Lesotho at 2,513 miles.

10. Our poor crow is so very tired from all his flights, and you may be too. So, our favorite crow's last flight will be from Lome, where he will fly due west until he runs right into another capital. This capital is the only world capital named after an American President (excluding Washington D.C.). Which capital is it?
