Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Can you name this famous university city situated on the River Thames?

Answer: Oxford

The River Thames is called the Isis while it passes through Oxford. Oxford University was first founded in the eleventh century, (although the exact date is unclear) making it one of the oldest such establishments in the world.
2. You need to identify this large town in Shropshire, situated on the River Severn.

Answer: Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury is situated on a large loop of the River Severn; the town is prone to flooding after heavy rainfall in mid-Wales.
Shrewsbury was first founded in around 800 AD, the name derives from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning 'scrubby-place'.
3. Leighton ___ ; which bird completes this Bedfordshire town's name?

Answer: Buzzard

Leighton Buzzard's rather unusual name probably derives from the twelfth century. The Bishop of Lincoln needed to differentiate between the two 'Leightons' in his diocese and added Busar to this one after his local representative, Theobald de Busar. This name has gradually evolved into Buzzard.
4. Which area around Cardiff's docklands was formerly named after an animal?

Answer: Tiger Bay

Tiger Bay was an area surrounding the docklands of Cardiff. Many thousands of tons of coal were exported via these docks and ships came from all over the world to unload their produce. The area had fallen into decline by the 1960s but massive investments in the 1990's have led to a transformation of the area.

The council have officially changed the name to Cardiff Bay but to locals it remains 'Tiger Bay'.
5. A few miles north of Dover on the Kent coast lies which town?

Answer: Ramsgate

The earliest references to 'Ramisgate' stem from around 1225 AD, although there was certainly a fishing settlement there for many hundreds of years previously.
Ramsgate's marina is one of the largest in south-east England with moorings for approximately 800 vessels.
6. There is a seaside resort in Dorset which has one of these 'fowl' names.

Answer: Swanage

Swanage was originally a fishing port; it gained popularity as a tourist attraction during Victorian times. In 2004, Swanage had a population of just over 10,000 people.
7. Can you spot the correct name of a Staffordshire village from this peculiar bunch?

Answer: Weston-under-Lizard

Weston-under-Lizard straddles the main A5 road between Shrewsbury and Cannock. Nearby is Weston Park where each summer the 'V' music festival takes place.
8. Which of these names is not a real English place-name?

Answer: Woodpecker Green

Goose Green is in Essex, Partridge Green is in West Sussex and there is a place called Sparrows Green in East Sussex.
There is no such place as Woodpecker Green, there is however a green woodpecker (Picus viridae) which is the largest woodpecker found in Britain.
9. Scotland now; which of these is an actual town?

Answer: Cowdenbeath

Cowdenbeath is a former mining town in Fife, the last mine closed during the 1960s. Its name derives from the Scottish gaelic Coilltean Beithe which means birch woods.
10. A small cove in Cornwall has which unusual name?

Answer: Mousehole

It's not pronounced as it looks! 'Mouzel' is my approximation of it (but I'm perfectly willing to be corrected). It is situated a few miles south-west of Penzance. Mousehole is also the name of a village on the cove.
