This is why the river is called the Hampshire Avon rather than the Dorset Avon. At Claverton there is a huge iron water wheel that is driven by the current of the Bristol Avon, and lifts water some 48 feet to top up the water level of the Kennet and Avon Canal in dry periods. It was built in 1813 and is a masterpiece of ecological engineering, using no fuel and giving rise to no by-products.
