Oil refining began in Grangemouth in 1924. The town was originally called Sealock due to its site at the eastern end of the Forth and Clyde Canal.

Grimsby, in Lincolnshire, has seen its fishing industry decline in recent years, and nowadays the frozen food industry is a major employer in the town.

The Glastonbury Festival has been held since the early 1970s. The town is overlooked by Glastonbury Tor, believed by many to be the site of Avalon of Arthurian legend.
