Bodies of Water Held at Bay Trivia Quiz

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Hudson's Bay Company was chartered in 1670 as a British trading company. It evolved into a mercantile enterprise which is one of the oldest continuous businesses in the world. Where is Hudson Bay, after which it was named?

Answer: In northeastern Canada

Hudson Bay is the second-largest bay in the world. It was named after Henry Hudson who explored it in 1610. The bay is filled with salt water, but is less salty than the oceans, which accounts for its propensity to freeze up in large parts during the winter.
2. The first landing site of Captain James Cook in Australia is only a short distance from modern Sydney. The place was originally planned to be a penal colony. In which bay did Captain Cook first drop anchor?

Answer: Botany Bay

Cook named the bay in honour of the large collection of native plants retrieved by his naturalists: Sir Joseph Banks and Doctor Daniel Charles Solander. The name Botany Bay has been assigned to prison ships in popular fiction because of the association with a proposed Australian penal colony. Freemans Bay and Rangihoua Bay are in New Zealand.
3. In 1968, Otis Redding had a hit recording with "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" which spent four weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 music poll. On what bay was the dock on which Otis sat located?

Answer: San Francisco Bay, California

The lyrics which disclose this particular dock's location are "I left my home in Georgia, headed for the 'Frisco Bay,'cause I've had nothing to live for and looks like nothin's gonna come my way." Sadly, Redding recorded this song on 7 December 1967, and died three days later when his plane crashed in Wisconsin.
4. When the Portuguese explorer Gaspar de Lemos sailed into Guanabara Bay on 1 January 1502, he thought he had entered the mouth of a huge river and named it accordingly. What is the great city which arises around Guanabara Bay?

Answer: Rio de Janeiro

The name Rio de Janeiro means, in Portuguese, "River of January." The name Guanabara means, in the native Tupi-Guarani language, "bosom of the sea." Guanabara Bay is the second largest bay in Brazil.
5. The gorgeous skyline of a major Asian city is visible from this deep-water bay on the South China Sea. It served a former British Colony which reverted to Chinese control. Name this important bay.

Answer: Victoria Harbour

Victoria Harbour is one of the busiest harbours on the planet. It was named by the British to honour Queen Victoria. Ha Long Bay is located in Vietnam. Phang Nga Bay is located in Thailand. Cenderawasih Bay is located in Indonesia.
6. The site of an abortive invasion attempt in 1961, which bay on the southern coast of Cuba is named in Spanish "Bahia de Cochinos"?

Answer: Bay of Pigs

The English name for the Bay of Pigs may be an erroneous translation in that it may refer to a kind of triggerfish which lives in the bay rather than to swine.
7. The novelist James A. Michener wrote a novel titled "Chesapeake" which follows the lives of people living on Chesapeake Bay between 1583 and 1978. By what two states is Chesapeake Bay bounded?

Answer: Maryland and Virginia

Chesapeake Bay is the largest bay in the United States. It is fed by more than a dozen rivers. The name derives from an Algonquian word meaning "at the big river" but with so many rivers flowing into it, it is difficult to discern which is intended.
8. The Beach Boys recorded a come-back hit in "Kokomo" in 1988. The lyrics invoke tropical places including Montego Bay. Where in the world is Montego Bay?

Answer: Jamaica

The particular lyric is "Aruba, Jamaica, ooo I wanna take you to Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama, Key Largo, Montego, baby why don't we go down to Kokomo." Montego Bay is the third most populous city in Jamaica. It is a tourist destination, a cruise ship stop, and a free port.
9. The Bay of Fundy has one of the greatest tidal ranges of any bay in the world. The range is about 17 meters which is a little more than 55 feet. Where is it located?

Answer: Between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia

An ancient story told by the Mi'kmaq Indians explains the high tides in the Bay of Fundy as being caused by a giant whale who lives in the waters, splashing its enormous tail. The name "Fundy" may derive from the French "fendu" meaning "split" or from the Portuguese "fondo" meaning "funnel."
10. On 12 October 1997, folk singer John Denver was killed when his experimental aircraft crashed on Monterey Bay. Where is Monterey Bay located?

Answer: Monterey, California

From the Spanish ("monte del rey"), Monterey means "the mountain of the king." Monterey, California, was an early Spanish settlement on the Pacific Coast and the capital of Alta California from 1775 to 1846.
