Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These rock formations can be found offshore on the west of the Island and there is a supposedly haunted 'Battery' station nearby.

Answer: The Needles

The Needles are on the west of the Island, near to Alum Bay. They are tall points of rock in the sea off the shore of the Island, caused by weathering and erosion over a long period of time. There is an attraction called the Needles Battery there, which is supposedly haunted by soldiers from World War II.
2. This main town is near the centre of the Island. It has a church in the town square and there are lots shops all around the centre of the town. The river Medina also runs through this town. What town is it?

Answer: Newport

Newport was apparently named Newport when people sailed up the River Medina to the centre of the Island and built a port there, hence 'New-Port'. There is also a Roman Villa here which was discovered in 1926.
3. Another place that has a haunted attraction, this time it's the shell of an old mansion. Where is it though?

Answer: Wroxall

The house is called Appuldurcombe house and it only has one room that is still fully intact, and a big wine cellar. People have reportedly seen the guest book pages flicking as if they were being turned by invisible hands, and have heard the cry of a baby coming from apparently nowhere, high above in the shell of the house, where rooms would have originally been.

There is a rumour that underground tunnels lead from the cellar to places all around Wroxall.
4. Which town has a cliff lift, Jungle Jims play area and the Steamer Inn?

Answer: Shanklin

There are sometimes landslides here due to the cliffs being so steep. There was once a pier here, but it was destroyed by a storm in 1987. Proposals were made to re-build the pier, but eventually the remains of the pier were just demolished.
5. Which of these towns can be reached by train, bus, car, hovercraft and catamaran?

Answer: Ryde

Ryde has a huge sandy beach stretching all the way along the seafront.
6. This site was chosen by the Normans to build a central castle, and at the time you would have been able to see 360 degree views of the Island. Although nowadays houses and buildings block these views, the castle remains. Where is it?

Answer: Carisbrooke

Carisbrooke is the site of Carisbrooke castle, the castle was attacked in 1377 by the French, but it was not taken and most of it still stands today. There is a visitor centre and a museum there and you can also walk around the walls and see the remains of the mansion that once stood within the walls of the castle.
7. The Romans once had a villa here as well, probably for the beautiful countryside. The train stops here.

Answer: Brading

Brading has a Roman villa, now in ruins which is a visitor attraction. You can still see the mosaics. There is also a well in the grounds, that, when excavated, had the bones of a young child in it.
8. The only town on the Island with an amusements pier, this place in near Yaverland. It is great for swimming in the sea during the summer.

Answer: Sandown

The beach here is great, with hardly any waves in the summer months and a lot of waves later in the year. It is great all year round, but sometimes a little cold. Other attractions here include Dinosaur Isle, a new museum where children can interact, doing puzzles, colouring and digging for fossils in a sand pit.
9. Near to Quarr Abbey, this is where you would go if you wanted to take your car off the Island and go to Portsmouth.

Answer: Fishbourne

Fishbourne is the site of the Wighlink car ferry terminal. It is also near to Quarr Abbey, where you can go to see the monastery and the old ruins of the previous Abbey that was once nearby.
10. Sounding like the name of a certain animal, this is where you would go if you wanted to take your car over the water to Southampton.

Answer: Cowes

Cowes is split in two, Cowes and East Cowes. It is also the site of the famous Cowes regatta, where thousands of people go each year to watch shows and see the yachts.
