Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Surprisingly, England has two languages. There is English of course, and another language spoken by a small number of people in which county?

Answer: Cornwall

The Cornish dialect (or Kernewek) was more or less extinct by the late 1700's. It was revived early last century and there are now around two thousand regular speakers. In 2002 it was officially recognised by the British Government as a minority language.
2. The Black Death killed millions of English people between 1348 and 1349. Which English county had the dubious distinction of hosting the first outbreak?

Answer: Dorset

It is generally agreed that the Plague was brought to England by an infected sailor around the 8th May 1348 and the first outbreak was in Weymouth, Dorset on 24 June. In the next 500 days it travelled the length and breadth of the country killing over half the population.

This outbreak ceased when the bugs were killed in the severe winter of 1349, but there were to be many further outbreaks over the next 300 years.
3. Which county hosts England's lowest point?

Answer: Cambridgeshire

The lowest point in England is in the Fenlands of Eastern England at Holme Fen, Cambridgeshire. Holme Fen is 2.75 metres below sea level. The drainage of the Fens means that the area is still sinking.
4. England's oldest working mine is not a coal mine. In which county would you find it?

Answer: Cheshire

England (and indeed Britain's) oldest working mine is in Winsford in Cheshire. It is a salt mine that was first dug in 1844 and now produces around 30,000 tons of salt a week. The salt bed itself is 25 metres thick and tunnels run for over 125 miles.
5. ALL the land in England higher than 3,000ft lies within the boundary of our biggest National Park, in which county?

Answer: Cumbria

The Lake District National Park was one of the first four parks designated in 1951 and lies wholly within Cumbria. Scafell Pike is the highest point in England. It is a beautiful place and well worth a visit, although it can get very busy in summer.
6. By population, which is England's smallest ceremonial county? (Be careful!)

Answer: City of London

What we know as London today is a metropolitan area that has grown and grown over the past 600 years and takes in parts of Middlesex, Kent, Surrey, Essex and Hertfordshire, but the actual "City of London" is just a single square mile block in the middle where government and financial matters are taken care of.

While many thousands of people work there, less than 8,000 people actually live within it making the City of London England's smallest city as well as the smallest county.
7. Which is the only county in England to have two separate stretches of coastline?

Answer: Devon

Devon has two separate coastlines, one to the south on the English Channel and another to the north on the Bristol Channel. The South West Coast Path (which is England's longest public footpath) runs along both coasts as it winds from Minehead to Poole.
8. The most northerly town in the world to actually sit on the Greenwich or Prime Meridian lies in which county?

Answer: Lincolnshire

The town in question is Louth in the eastern part of Lincolnshire. St James' Church in the town has the tallest parish church spire in England at 90 metres.
9. The USA-Canada border may be the world's longest undefended frontier, but I think England has the shortest. Which English county shares a LAND border with France. (Think about it!)

Answer: Kent

Kent is the ONLY English county to share a land border with a European country by virtue of the Channel Tunnel. The nominal border is less than 19 metres wide shared between the three tunnels and sits around 240 metres under the English Channel (or "La Manche" as our French chums call it). It is not patrolled or policed as the English and French people are the best of friends.
10. Which county contains England's highest village?

Answer: Staffordshire

The highest village in England is Flash, Staffordshire. It is a small remote hamlet on the slopes of Axe Adge Moor in the corner of Staffordshire where it meets Derbyshire and Cheshire. It is 463 metres above sea level.
