Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Forest of Dean is an area in which country of the UK?

Answer: England

The Forest of Dean sits at the western edge of the county of Gloucestershire. It is on the border of England and Wales and has nearby boundaries of the river Wye and the river Severn.
2. What do the residents of the Forest of Dean call themselves?

Answer: Foresters

The forest area is not as extensive as it once was, and few people now work exclusively as a forester, however the term is still used to describe a resident.
3. Which is the largest town in the Forest of Dean (think black gold and a river crossing)

Answer: Coleford

With a population of nearly 8,500 Coleford is technically the largest community in the Forest of Dean District in the county of Gloucestershire. The town itself, however, is relatively small with the population of the parish boosted by a series of outlying settlements: Mile End, Broadwell, Coalway and Milkwall.
4. One of the first in the UK, the Forest of Dean is home to which of these arty walks?

Answer: The Sculpture Trail

The Sculpure Trail provides a unique opportunity to walk through the woodlands and discover art along the way. Established in 1986, it is 4.5 miles long. Pick up a map from the cafe at Beechenhurst Lodge.
5. Just south of The Forest of Dean is the town of Chepstow Why might you make a visit to Chepstow?

Answer: All of these

Chepstow sits just in Wales. Chepstow racecourse is home to 32 jumps and flat races. It is the home of the Welsh Grand National.
The river Wye is a popular canoeing destination and most trips end in Chepstow where the Wye is just a couple of miles short of flowing into the dangerous river Severn.
Chepstow Castle stretches out along a limestone cliff above the River Wye like a history lesson in stone. It was one of the first Norman strongholds in Wales.
6. What feral, hog-like creature might you find in the forest?

Answer: Wild boar

Boar were once common in the Forest of Dean and were hunted for food. In 2004 a group of about sixty farm-raised boar were dumped near Staunton. Boar are now feral throughout the Forest Area. Wild boar are normally secretive, and largely nocturnal if they are not interfered with, and are unlikely to attack people.
7. Clearwell caves are now a visitor attraction. They are in fact ancient mines as well as impressive caverns. What ore was mined here that gives the caves their reddish hue?

Answer: Iron

An atmospheric and mysterious natural cave that has been mined for iron ore and ochre pigments for over 4,500 years, and winner of awards for best family attraction in Gloucestershire, Clearwell Caves is worth a visit. At Christmas, the Caves are decorated and transformed into a special family event.
The adventurous can book on a caving experience at a deeper level.
8. Visitors to the Forest of Dean should also go to the nearby Wye Valley. On the banks, there is a magnificent ruined abbey. What is it called?

Answer: Tintern Abbey

The Cistercian abbey of Tintern is one of the greatest monastic ruins of Wales. It was only the second Cistercian foundation in Britain, and the first in Wales, and was founded on 9 May 1131.

Tintern's crowning glory, its great church, was built between 1269 and 1301. It stands today much as it did then, apart from its lack of a roof, window glass and internal divisions. Although not nearly as long as the great Cistercian abbey churches at Fountains and Rievaulx, its completeness makes it impressive.
9. The Forest of Dean lies in historic Gloucestershire. The county town of Gloucester lies to the North. Its impressive cathedral was used for the filming of scenes in a series of films featuring which spectacled boy wizard?

Answer: Harry Potter

Gloucester Cathedral has appeared in two "Harry Potter" films - "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets".

Notable people buried at Gloucester Cathedral include: Osric, king of the Hwicce; Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the Conqueror; Edward II of England, seventh Plantagenet king of England
10. Whilst visiting the Forest of Dean, you might like to take a train ride between Lydney Junction and Parkend. This line uses steam trains, is only for visitors and tourists and is mainly run by volunteers. What is this type of railway called?

Answer: Heritage Railway

The Dean Forest Railway runs for four and half miles through beautiful woodland and countryside. There are five stops and plans to extend the line.
