Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I've just woken up and quite literally smelled the coffee. Too much Kurt Cobain and Frasier Crane for me. I Gotta Get Outta Here! I'm driving 225 kilometres north, to which city around 15 kilometres west of Burnaby?

Answer: Vancouver

So I've left Seattle, the largest city in not only Washington state but the entire northwest of the US. I've headed north on the I-5 and driven through Everett and Bellingham, across the Canadian border into British Columbia, and finally to the seaport city of Vancouver. Robson Square, the Sun Tower and the art deco Marine Building are some of the sights I hope to see during my stay.
2. I have walked through the Bois de Boulogne, had a Kronenbourg beer in a cafe on Avenue des Champs-Élysées and climbed a tower similar to one in Blackpool, England. Time to leave. I Gotta Get Outta Here! It's a long drive, around 1,740 kilometres in a south westerly direction to this capital city. Where am I going?

Answer: Lisbon

I leave Paris, France and head for the Bay of Biscay. Bordeaux is the first city of note that I drive through, then after crossing the border into Spain I arrive at the Basque city of San Sebastián. Overnight stop. Continuing on, 900 kilometres and 12 hours later, I reach Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. I intend to visit the entertainment area Bairro Alto with the nightclubs tonight, then tomorrow I'll see the more conventional sights: The Castelo de São Jorge, Lisbon Cathedral and Belém Tower to name but a few.
3. I'm close to a town called Ooewiêcim, though you probably know it by a different name. It's close to the confluence of the rivers Vistula and Sola. People familiar with the history of the holocaust will recognise where I am. I Gotta Get Outta Here! I'm going to drive more or less due west for 458 kilometres and when I get there I'm going to watch the sun go down from the Charles Bridge. Where am I heading?

Answer: Prague

Ooewiêcim or Auschwitz as the Germans know it was too much for me, I had to leave. Situated around fifty kilometres from Krakow in Poland, Auschwitz was a complex of World War II concentration and extermination camps. Today it is known as the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, a place of history, contemplation and learning. I enter the Czech Republic and stop for dinner at the country's second largest city Brno. Brno to Prague only 211 kilometres. I'll find a hotel close to Wenceslas Square and look forward to relaxing somewhere close by the Vltava river.
4. I've spent all day on the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon, in a vibrant city that is the country's second largest. It's too good, I Gotta Get Outta Here! I intend to drive west and then south a little for around 423 kilometres to not only the largest city in the country, but also the largest in the southern hemisphere. I'm in my car and driving, but to where?

Answer: São Paulo

I'm in Brazil. I've left the wonderous sites of Rio de Janeiro behind. I have driven through Nova Iguaçu, bypassed a few urban sprawls and will soon be arriving in São Paulo, a municipality with a population closing in on twelve million. The Correios Palace, the Martinelli Building and Pico do Jaraguá Mountain, the highest point of the city, are all things I cannot wait to cast my eyes upon.
5. I'm in the land of "Van der Valk" and Ruud Gullit. I've worn clogs and tiptoed through the tulips, but now the red lights are hurting my eyes. I Gotta Get Outta Here! I'm driving south and a few degrees west for 203 kilometres, I have to hurry because I'm meeting friends for dinner near Heysel Exhibition Park, in which city?

Answer: Brussels

I departed Amsterdam this morning and headed south through Utrecht and Breda out of the Netherlands and into Belgium, passing Antwerp and arriving in the capital of Belgium, (as well as European politics) Brussels, before dark. The Heysel Exhibition Park is in the north of the city and housed Expo '58 and the Brussels International Exposition of 1935. The park is also the location of the infamous Heysel Stadium which claimed the lives of 39 people on the terraces of the 1985 European Cup final.
6. I'm in a US state capital city 330 kilometres due north of Dallas, Texas. I understand this city has had serious problems with tornados over the years. I Gotta Get Outta Here! I am initially going to head west for 875 kilometres to my destination state's largest city, then I'm continuing northeast for 101 kilometres to my ultimate destination; the highest and oldest state capital in the United States. Which city will I be in?

Answer: Santa Fe

So the problem tornadoes I heard about were in Oklahoma City. I left there via the third longest major east-west Interstate Highway in the USA, the Interstate 40. I stopped for gas in Amarillo before crossing into New Mexico and my first port of call Albuquerque. I stretch my legs with a walk along the banks of the Rio Grande before getting back in the car and completing my journey to the city of Santa Fe. Santa Fe is a wonderfully diverse city where the old and the new rub shoulders amicably.

The multicultural character of the city is typified by the visual arts and crafts representations on virtually every other street.
7. I have just checked out of The Raffles Hotel in one of the busiest ports in Asia (and the world), some 85 kilometres north of the equator. I've a two or three or day drive ahead of me, so, I Gotta Get Outta Here! I must head north for 1,838 kilometres to the capital of the "Land of Smiles" situated on the Chao Phraya River. Where is my destination?

Answer: Bangkok

The Thai capital Bangkok never felt more welcoming. I've finally arrived after a two and a half day drive from Singapore. I've driven all the way up through Malaysia and southern Thailand with the Andaman Sea to the west and the Gulf of Thailand to the east. Bangkok is a stimulating metropolis, and though in parts dirty and poverty stricken, heavily industrialised with non-stop bumper to bumper traffic, it's still one of the most vibrant and exciting places on the planet to hang out.
8. There's celebrations of Mozart everywhere in this city and I keep imagining Christopher Plummer and his annoying nanny fleeing the Nazis and singing "Edelweiss". I Gotta Get Outta Here! Just a 143 kilometre drive northwest to a city of lederhosen, beer and BMWs. My destination is?

Answer: Munich

I was in Salzburg, Austria's fourth largest city, the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the setting for "The Sound of Music" and home to a multitude of visually stunning fortresses, squares and monuments. I departed and crossed into Bavaria and soon arrived in the city of Munich, the state capital situated on the River Isar. Areas of the city were re-built after World War II, but there are still lots of older buildings of architectural grandness that blend well with the ultra-modern feel that is Munich today.
9. After watching the changing of the guard, eating pie, mash and liquor washed down with warm, brown beer, I decided: I Gotta Get Outta Here! To the coast under the sea and onwards, some 1,242 kilometres in total. Heading south and a little to the east, I should be strolling along the Canebière, viewing the basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde. or swimming in the Mediterranean in the not too distant future. Where am I going?

Answer: Marseille

I wasn't keen on London, so I made my way to the English coastal town of Folkestone, drove on to the Eurotunnel Shuttle and 38 kilometres later was close to Calais in northern France. A day's drive later, after skirting Paris, stopping briefly for dinner in Lyon, (the gastronomic capital of France) before arriving in Marseille in the dead of night.

The Abbey of St. Victor, The Phare de Sainte Marie (an imposing lighthouse on the port) and of course the Neo-Byzantine church the Notre-Dame de la Garde, are all on my to see list for tomorrow.
10. I'm about to leave a US state capital, sometimes called the "Capital of the South" or the "Cradle of the Confederacy". I visited the Hank Williams Museum and the Shakespeare Festival at Blount Park. I Gotta Get Outta Here! 407 kilometres in a southwesterly direction and I should be in the city of the Saints, Hornets, and Zephyrs in time for a po'boy before turning in for the night. In which city will I be resting my head?

Answer: New Orleans

I began in Montgomery, Alabama, a city entrenched in its impressive musical and civil rights history. I left. Greenville, Mobile, Biloxi and Gulfport en route all looked inviting, but I didn't pull over until I reached my prima destination: New Orleans. No matter how many times one visits Louisiana's largest city, there is always something new to see, to drink or to eat. I can't wait for nightfall and the French Quarter to come alive! Whilst the after effects of "Hurricane Katrina" are obvious and there for all to see, the city does what it does best; it carries on carrying on.

The Saints, Hornets, and Zephyrs are New Orleans sports teams and a po'boy is a torpedo type sandwich filled and fried.
