The Catholic University of Leuven was founded in Leuven in 1425. John IV, Duke of Brabant was the rule of the House of Valois from 1415 to 1427. He founded the university which had approval from Pope Martin V. The university was the first university in all the Low Countries.

It is also the oldest Catholic university still functioning as such in the world. The university continues its work though was divided into two distinct institutions in 1968. The original Catholic University of Leuven remains in Dutch speaking Leuven, while the the other is in the French speaking town of Louvain-la-Neuve.
