Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This picture shows the Belgian Parliament building in Brussels. Besides being the Belgian capital, Brussels is also the headquarters of which of these organizations?

Answer: NATO

Brussels has housed NATO headquarters since 1949. It also plays host to the European Union's European Commission.
2. In the Middle Ages and Renaissance, Flanders was famous for which of these products?

Answer: woolen cloth

Flemish wool production was so large that the Belgians imported wool, notably from Scotland and England. Ghent, pictured, was once the second largest city in Europe. Only Paris was larger.
3. Bruges, or Brugge, holds a festival on Ascension Day, during which a famous relic is paraded through the streets of the city. What is this relic, believed to have been brought back from Jerusalem after the second crusade in the twelfth century?

Answer: A vial of Jesus' blood

Bruges' festival, called the Procession of the Holy Blood, includes marchers who recreate Biblical scenes as well as those wearing the costumes of the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
4. Antwerp is the second largest port in Europe, after Rotterdam. What river does the city straddle?

Answer: Scheldt

The region of the Scheldt where Antwerp is located has been settled since at least Roman times. The city was home to painters Rubens and Van Dyck and to conductor André Cluytens, among others.
5. In the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries, most of Belgium was ruled by the Spanish branch of which dynasty?

Answer: Hapsburg

Belgium was part of the "low countries" throughout the Renaissance and into the time of Napoleon. At different times through that period, Belgium was ruled by the French Burgundian princes, the Hapsburgs, the Spanish Hapsburgs, the Austrian Hapsburgs, and Napoleon. Belgium finally obtained, and retained, independence from the Netherlands in 1830.
6. What kind of bridge is this one, which spans the Meuse river near Liege, Belgium?

Answer: cable-stayed

The Wandre Bridge crosses the Meuse River between Liege and its suburb of Wandre. The bridge was completed in 1989, replacing bridges which had stood in that area since the late nineteenth century.
7. Because of its location and terrain, Belgium has been a battlefield since long before the battle of Waterloo. Which WWII battle was this monument erected to commemorate in the Belgian city of Bastogne?

Answer: The Battle of the Bulge

The Ardennes Offensive, or the Battle of the Bulge, was the last great German offensive of World War II. Bastogne, an important crossroads in the German path, was besieged for several days in December, 1944. Gen. McAuliffe, commanding the 101st Airborne Division in Bastogne, is famous for his terse reply to a demand that he surrender: "Nuts!".
8. The town of Chimay is home to a Trappist monastery which is famous for making what product?

Answer: beer

Beer is the Belgian drink of choice. The average Belgian drank 81 liters of beer per year, according to a 2004 report.
9. The Ardennes Forest is also known for its wild game. What is this animal, which might be hunted for its meat?

Answer: wild boar

The Ardennes Forest produces many meat products, including a famous ham (though I expect that domestic swine are the source of the ham, not their wild cousins).
10. No visit to Belgium would be complete without a dish of this plant, a variety of chicory. It's called "witloof" in Flemish. What do we know it better as?

Answer: Endive

The endive plants are cultivated out of the light so that the leaves stay white. Endive can be served cold or hot.
