Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As an average, what ocean is the shallowest?

Answer: Arctic Ocean

The Arctic ocean has an average depth of 1300 meters. Also it is the ocean with the "smallest" maximum depth, of 5450 meters.

The deepest is the Pacific Ocean, with an average depth of 4200 meters.
2. What is the name of the deepest trench?

Answer: Mariana Trench

The Mariana Trench is the deepest; actually it is deeper then the tallest mountains on Earth are high: 11033 meters, or 36198 feet.

Amazingly enough, fish have been found deep into the abyss of the Mariana Trench, at 27460 feet, or more then nine kilometres below the sea surface.
3. What is the name of the deepest point in the oceans?

Answer: Challenger Deep

The Challenger Deep, has its name from the British survey ship, "Challenger II", who in 1951, measured this deep to be 10863 meters. Later Russian surveys revealed the depths of 11033 meters.

Trieste Deep does not exist, however Trieste is the name of the bathyscaphe which in 1960 made the yet deepest descent into the trench at 10924 meters.
4. Let's turn around the globe, and look at the Atlantic Ocean. What is the name of the deepest trench in the Atlantic?

Answer: Puerto Rico Trench

Puerto Rico Trench is the deepest, at 8605 meters. The only other trench in the Atlantic is the South Sandwich Trench at 8325 meters. This is also called the Ross Deep.

Benguela Trench does not exist. Benguela is a current along the African coast.
5. The only trench in the Indian Ocean is the Java Trench, but about how many kilometres deep is it?

Answer: 7.5

The Java Trench is measured to be 7725 meters, and is also called the Sunda Trench. It is the subduction of the Indian Ocean Basin beneath the Indonesian Islands, that cause the trench, as well as many annual earthquakes in the area around the lesser Sunda Islands. Also it is this movement which was responsible for two of the biggest volcanic eruptions ever at Tambora in 1815, and Krakatau in 1883.
6. Let's go ashore, at least for a while. The deepest lake in the world is Lake Baikal in Siberia. About how deep is it?

Answer: 1600 meters

Not only is it the deepest lake, it also holds about 1/5 of the world's fresh surface water. Oh and the lake is so deep that the deepest point is more than one kilometre below sea level.
7. Which of the following trenches is the deepest one?

Answer: Tonga Trench

The Tonga Trench is the deepest of them, and the second deepest on Earth, 10800 meters. Sometimes the Tonga and the Kermadec Trench are considered to be one trench, because they lie in line, due north/south to each other. The Kermadec Trench itself is 10047 meters.
8. Can you place the following trenches in the correct order, from north toward south?

Answer: Kuril, Japan, Bonin, Mariana, Yap

The right order is; Kuril, Japan, Bonin, Mariana, Yap.
All these together, are sometimes regarded as one big trench, stretching for more then 7000 km. along the Pacific Ocean floor, parallel to the western rim of the "Ring of Fire".
9. Which of these trenches is the only one which travels in a north-south direction rather than east to west?

Answer: Peru-Chile Trench

The Peru-Chile Trench is the odd one. It is the only one of the four which goes in a north-south direction. It is also the only one that follows a continent, rather than an arc of islands.
10. And the final question: What kind of force is responsible for the creation of all these trenches?

Answer: Subduction

Volcanism is a by-product of subduction, since the subduction causes magma to "pile" up on the opposite site of the convergence zone, therefore pushing it up to the surface. Plate tectonic is not a force. It is just the "puzzle" of the Earth's crust.
