Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The northernmost point in Canada is on which island?

Answer: Ellesmere Island

Found in the northern reaches of the Canadian territory of Nunavut, Ellesmere Island is, for all intents and purposes, uninhabited besides science communities in the far-north towns of Alert, Eureka, and Grise Fiord (which contains a small permanent Inuit population).

The region is generally cold year-round due to its proximity to the North Pole. Most of the island is covered in thick ice shelf making it quite barren. Ellesmere is also often the home of the Magnetic North Pole though this has varied in the recent past due to its constant shifting.
2. The border between China and Nepal cuts across the summit of what famous peak?

Answer: Everest

Earth's highest peak, Everest is found in the Himalayas and is likely the go-to mountain for anyone looking for an exemplar. Long considered to be one of the most dangerous climbs in the world due to its altitude, it reaches nearly eight and a half kilometres above sea level.

The first full climb of the mountain occurred in 1953 and since then it's been ascended successfully by thousands looking for a challenging achievement. It's a tough one to encourage though; even experienced climbers risk death due to the harsh conditions.
3. Which of these notable locations in American history is found in New York City?

Answer: Ellis Island

Ellis Island is likely much more known for its historical backing, being the checkpoint for seafaring immigrants arriving in New York City for more than thirty years at the start of the twentieth century. Situated between New York and New Jersey, Ellis Island sits in the bay alongside Liberty Island and acts as part of the greater landmark there. Accessed by ferry it still contains a museum chronicling the inspection site and military use of its buildings. Though closed to its most well-known purpose in 1924, Ellis Island saw through more than twelve million immigrants, all of whom settled across North America.
4. One of the Great Lakes of North America, what body of water is home to Cleveland, Buffalo, and Point Pelee?

Answer: Erie

The second-smallest of the Great Lakes, Erie is still an important one, being a major lake for shipping and being one of the two lakes that squish the waterways that become Niagara Falls. Split between Canada and the United States, Erie is shared with Ontario, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, being home to the cities of Cleveland, Buffalo, Toledo, and Erie (Penn.). Point Pelee is particularly notable since it stretches down from Ontario into the lake, acting as Canada's southernmost point. Nine states are further north than Point Pelee; their borders don't reach as far south.
5. The highlands of this nation are part of the Afar Triangle and act as a natural ridge blocking its neighbours from the Red Sea. What's the country?

Answer: Eritrea

Eritrea makes up a large portion of Africa's northeastern coast and blocks Ethiopia from any ocean or sea with its borders and landscape; it's less than one hundred kilometers between their border and the Red Sea. Asmara, its capital, is one of the highest in the world and, while small a few hundred years ago, was colonised by the Italians to grow through its first few decades as an official nation. The Afar Triangle found there is a geological depression on the edge of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

While Eritrea contains vast stretches of highlands, the Afar Triangle is considered to be one of the earliest sites of human civilization anywhere in the world.
6. You could think about the Firth of Forth or Arthur's Seat...or even the Midlothian region... but all of these would lead you back to what 'E' city?

Answer: Edinburgh

The Scottish capital city, Edinburgh is an old one having been settled as far back as the 7th century AD. Found on the Firth of Forth (which connects to the North Sea), it's a city that becamea UK powerhouse in less-messy industries (think banking and tourism) over time.

While many other Scottish cities further to the north focus more on natural resources and shipping, Edinburgh can rest on its laurels a bit more in the modern day. The city is home to countless museums and historical sites, castles, libraries, and churches.

It's second only to Glasgow in population.
7. The Ryukyu Islands of Japan are in what body of water?

Answer: East China Sea

A series of smaller islands arching down south beneath the main four islands of Japan, the Ryukyu Islands make up the eastern edge of the East China Sea, a body of water that borders China (Shanghai is on this coast) and stretches down to Taiwan. Part of the Pacific Ocean, this area is a colossal shipping region, especially between the nations of Far East Asia.

It's also home to the mouth of the Yangtze River, the longest river on the continent and the third-largest in the world (after the Nile and the Amazon).
8. The nation formerly known as Swaziland changed its name in 2018. What did it become?

Answer: Eswatini

One of Africa's smallest nations, Eswatini is landlocked by Mozambique and, around three quarters of its border, South Africa. Known as Swaziland until 2018, Eswatini became a British Protectorate after the Boer War and regained independence in the 1960s.

The country is small, but it contains a wide array of ecosystems including mountains, bushlands, savannah, and rainforests. Its capital is the city of Mbabane.
9. Which of these North American locations is furthest south?

Answer: Everglades National Park

An expanse of tropical wetlands in the south of Florida, the Everglades are a unique ecosystem and one of the U.S.'s most threatened environments. One of America's largest National Parks, the Everglades take in more than six thousand square kilometers of wetlands in its protected borders.

In reality, the region is five times that size. Effigy Mounds National Monument is a Native American burial site in Iowa; Eldorado Canyon State Park is in Colorado; Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve is near Puget Sound in Washington state. None of them are anywhere near as far south as the Everglades.
10. Although this nation contains jungles in its east, its show-stopping centerpiece is the volcano depicted, visible from its capital. What's the country?

Answer: Ecuador

The depicted mountain is Cotopaxi, an active volcano visible from the Ecuadorian capital city of Quito. Ecuador is a unique country being situated in the Andes for the most part, but the nation also borders on the Amazon jungle in its east and the Pacific in the west. Sitting directly on the Equator (hence the name of the country), it's known for its natural spaces. Notably, Ecuador possesses the Galapagos Islands off its shores, known for its scientific contributions, especially in the work of evolutionary scientist Charles Darwin.
