Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Home to the cities of Jupiter, Kissimmee, and Panama City, what's the U.S. 'Sunshine State'?

Answer: Florida

One of the most populated of the U.S. states, Florida is a peninsula that stretches southeast off the corner of the country into the Caribbean Sea. Considered the 'Sunshine State' due to its often favourable weather, it's also susceptible to a significant bad weather season filled with hurricanes. That said, it's a major vacation destination and home to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and other massive, internationally-renowned theme parks. Amongst its largest cities are Miami, Orlando, and Jacksonville.
2. Also known as 'Islas Malvinas', which of these is found due east of Patagonia?

Answer: Falkland Islands

Found nearly five hundred kilometres east of Argentina's southern tip, the Falklands are an archipelago of hundreds of islands with a storied history. Technically part of an ecosystem similar to Antarctica to the south, it's a mountainous grouping of landmasses home to a number of rare bird and marine species.

Its capital, Stanley, is on the far east of East Falkland and is often used as a last stop for travel to Antarctica; it's a couple hours flight from Ushuaia, Argentina at the edge of the South American continent.
3. Although it's not one of Canada's longest rivers (it's eleventh-longest), it is the longest in Canada's westernmost province. Which of these flows through the Greater Vancouver Area?

Answer: Fraser River

Taking its source from Mount Robson Provincial Park on the border with Alberta, the Fraser River winds its way 1,375 kilometres entirely through the province of British Columbia before flowing into the Pacific Ocean near Vancouver. Named after famed British explorer Simon Fraser, who would be amongst the first to settle in the province, it has been a critical waterway much longer for the indigenous peoples of the region.
4. Which of these locations is found on the island nation of Tuvalu?

Answer: Funafuti

The capital city of Tuvalu, Funafuti holds most of the nation's population on its small amount of land, an atoll surrounding a massive lagoon sitting in the South Pacific. Tuvalu contains a series of tropical islands and reefs and sits almost at the halfway point between Australia to the west and Hawaii to the far northeast.

The landforms of the Fitzroy Islands are part of Tasmania, the town of Faaa is in French Polynesia, and Freire is a town in Chile.
5. One of Brazil's largest cities and the capital of the State of Ceará, in which of these cities would you be able to watch the jangadas fishing off the coast?

Answer: Fortaleza

Found in Northeastern Brazil, the city of Fortaleza is the fifth-largest in the nation and it shares the region with Salvador and Recife. Known for being a tourist city, Fortaleza is perhaps best remembered for its beautiful coastline looking north into the Atlantic.

The jagandas, traditional fishing boats, are still typically used on its waters. The rest of the surrounding Ceará province is, by and large, a mountainous, rugged expanse of highland.
6. Nice, Cannes, and Saint-Tropez are all part of what European region?

Answer: French Riviera

The idyllic southeastern stretch of France, found along the Mediterranean Coast and abutting the Italian border, the French Riviera is considered a retreat for the rich and famous. Known for beautiful weather, sunny beaches, and resorts aplenty, the area is home to the cities of Nice, Toulon, Cannes, Antibes, and the Principality of Monaco. Also known as the Côte d'Azur, the region has been populated for thousands of years.

It's also known in the pop culture world for being the home of the Cannes Film Festival, considered one of the most prestigious annual cinema events.
7. Which one of these U.S. Fort Cities is furthest west?

Answer: Fort Collins

Found in Northern Colorado, the outpost of Fort Collins was established in the 1860s and set itself close to the Rocky Mountain foothills. In modern times it's the home of Colorado State University and known for its breweries.

It's certainly further west than Fort Worth, Texas, found right next door to Dallas more than eight hundred miles to the southeast of Fort Collins. Even further away is Fort Wayne, Indiana, more than eleven hundred miles due east. Fort Lauderdale is the easy out; it's in Florida on America's east coast.
8. Japan's highest mountain is known by what name?

Answer: Fuji

Reaching 3,776 metres in height, the dormant volcano of Mount Fuji is one of the many breathtaking natural landmarks of Japan, and certainly its tallest. Found southwest of Tokyo, Fuji is quite popular with climbers, even from a leisure standpoint. Not the most difficult mountain to climb (you can climb its trails without real technical concern), it sees thousands of hikers on the daily, some for the pastime and some for religious pilgrimage. Fuji is also an important cultural touchstone for the Japanese, appearing in art over the centuries.
9. None of Africa's nations starts with 'F', but it does have one capital city starting with 'F'. Which is it?

Answer: Freetown

Freetown, Sierra Leone would be the only one of these to be a capital with Fez, Morocco and Franceville, Gabon being cities and Frenda, Algeria being significantly smaller. Found on the western coast of Africa, Freetown was established due to its spot on the Atlantic Ocean. Because of the massive natural harbour that the city is built around (the largest of such in Africa), Freetown is a critical transport hub for sea shipping as boats head up to the Mediterranean to the north and down along the African coast towards South Africa.
10. Viti Levu and Vanua Levu are major islands in what Pacific archipelago?

Answer: Fiji

Found two thousand kilometres north of New Zealand in the South Pacific, the Republic of Fiji has been inhabited for more than four thousand years and has seen the occupation of early Australasians, Polynesians, and even the British in its long history. Though comprised of hundreds of islands, most of its citizens live on the largest of them, Viti Levu, which is also home to the capital city of Suva. Fiji is also surrounded by a number of coral reefs and gorgeous beaches, making it a popular vacation destination.
