Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You just now drove north across the Mackinac Bridge (which at one time had the longest suspension span between cable anchorages in the world). Where are you, now that you have reached land after crossing over the Straits of Mackinac?

Answer: Michigan

You departed the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, and landed on the Upper Peninsula.
2. Some folks theorize that thousands of years ago these straits were bridged by land, and that people from one continent crossed the land connection to become the first inhabitants of another, unoccupied continent.

Answer: Bering Strait

The Bering Strait separates Siberia from Alaska. Perhaps some especially hardy Asians (it's awfully cold up there) crossed there and became the ancestors of North American and South American native peoples, more than 20,000 years back.
3. The Sunda Strait passes between two large islands and is a connection between the Indian Ocean and the Java Sea. On a smaller island in this strait is one of Earth's most destructive volcanoes. Which one?

Answer: Krakatoa

The two large islands are Sumatra and Java, and Sunda Strait is a major passage between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. In 1883 an eruption of Krakatoa produced one of the largest explosions ever experienced on Earth--one which destroyed much of Krakatau island, sent a cloud of ash and dust all around the world, and killed at least 36,000 people locally.
4. The Strait of Hormuz was prominently in the news in 1988, when a Airbus jet airliner was downed by a U.S. Navy ship there. If I stood on the south side of this strait and waved at my friend who lived across the way, what nationality would she be?

Answer: Iranian

Iran is on the north, and the United Arab Emirates and a bit of Oman are on the south side of the Strait of Hormuz.
5. The Bosphorus is a strait separating what large land masses?

Answer: Asia and Europe

It's Turkey on both sides of The Bosphorus--in fact, the city of Istanbul straddles this strait.
6. The Florida Strait connects the Atlantic Ocean to:

Answer: Gulf of Mexico

One one side is Cuba, on the other is the southern tip of Florida and the string of islands called the Florida Keys.
7. Which of these is the "dual" of a strait--that is, it's a naturally-occurring narrow piece of land connecting two large land masses?

Answer: isthmus

I suppose there's no better example than the Isthmus of Panama, between the North and South American continents.
8. From Victoria, British Columbia, one can look southward and hope to see the United States of America. The Straits across which that person is trying to peer are named after which man?

Answer: Capitan Juan de Fuca

Juan was a Greek ship's captain (born Ioannis Phokas, so it is said) who was one of many explorers seeking the fabled Northwest Passage connecting the Pacific and the Great Lakes (and thereby the Atlantic). He may or may not have actually sailed through the long passage now called the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
9. The Pescadores Islands are located in what strait?

Answer: Taiwan Strait

The Pescadores are an archipelago in the strait which connects the South China Sea to the East China Sea--and separates Taiwan from the Chinese mainland.
10. The Strait of Corryvreckan, noted and named for its dangerous whirlpool, is located in the Inner Hebrides. Where is that?

Answer: Scotland

The name Corryvreckan, it is thought, may come from Gaelic for "Breacan's Calderon." Breacan was a Prince and son of Lochlin, King of Norway. Breacan, according to legend, drowned in the whirlpool. Another theory is that the name is based on "Coirebhreacain" in Gaelic, which translates roughly as "cauldron of the speckled seas."
11. What country sits opposite the Rock of Gibraltar across the Straits of Gibraltar?

Answer: Morocco

A design study is ongoing for a bridge to cross the Straits of Gibraltar. Such a bridge would be the longest and highest ever constructed.
12. Until the Panama Canal was constructed a hundred years ago, what was the only viable way to sail between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans?

Answer: Strait of Magellan/Cape Horn

The mainland of South America is on the north, and the Tierra del Fuego archipelago is on the south. The many navigational hazards and the foul, unpredictable weather made a passage "around The Horn" a deadly and exciting experience, you betcha. There was always the Northwest Passage that was a theoretical way to travel between the two oceans (over the top of Canada) but it's rarely navigable due to ice packs and the like.
13. Torres Strait separates Australia from what large island?

Answer: New Guinea

This strait connects the Coral Sea to the east with the Arafura Sea to the west.
14. The Strait of Otranto joins the Adriatic Sea with the Ionian Sea. Knowing that, and considering the apparent language behind the name "Otranto," in what country would you expect to find the seaport city named Otranto?

Answer: Italy

Otranto sits on the site of the ancient town Hydruntum, which was of Greek origin, but it is located on the heel of the Italian "boot."
15. The Strait of Dover separates France and England. What is the French designation for this strait?

Answer: Pas de Calais

This strait represents the narrowest part of the English Channel. As such, it has figured very importantly in travel and commerce and warfare between the British Isles and the European mainland throughout history. It held great significance in the planning and execution of the June, 1944 D-Day Invasion of Europe. Today, the Channel Tunnel crosses beneath the Strait of Dover.
