McLaren Vale is located less than an hour's drive south of Adelaide, the South Australian capital. Initially an area for cereal crops, the first grape vines were planted in 1838 and at least three wineries operating today were up and running by 1850.
2. The town of McBeath is located in the Kimberley region. This region is famous for pearls, beef cattle, diamonds and the Bungle Bungles. In which state of Australia would you find the Kimberley region?

Answer: Western Australia

The Kimberley area produces over 30% of the world's diamonds including the pink diamonds for which it is especially known. The area stretches over the north of Western Australia. England could fit into the area about three times over. McBeath is a small town about 500 kms inland by road from Derby, Western Australia.
3. The McKillop Bridge is on the Bonang Highway in Victoria. The bridge is 256m long and crosses which river made famous in a poem by Banjo Patterson?

Answer: Snowy River

The Snowy River travels through New South Wales and Victoria before emptying into Bass Strait. It's about 350 kms (218 miles) long.

The poem referred to is "The Man From Snowy River" by A.B.(Banjo) Patterson. Patterson's poem is about a ride through the mountains on horseback to recapture a very valuable escaped horse. The poem has been made into a movie and a television series. The first two lines are:
"There was movement at the station for the word had passed around,
That the colt from Old Regret had got away".

The McCrae Homestead was built in 1844 and as such is one of the oldest houses still standing in Victoria. In 1970 it was bought by The National Trust. Now the homestead is furnished and equipped as it would have been by the original owners, Andrew and Georgiana McCrae.

Macarthur is a fairly new suburb of Canberra with the first residents locating there in 1983. Macarthur was named after John Macarthur who originally came

New South Wales. He also a bred horses, planted the first grape vines in Australia, and was a politician in the fledgling NSW parliament. His wife
Elizabeth was a major contributor to John Macarthur's success and John named his property near Parramatta, Sydney after her. The homestead house at
Elizabeth Farm is now a museum.

Macquarie and MacGregor are suburbs of Canberra also, named for former state Governors. McKellar is also in Canberra, named after a Federal Government
Minister in the 1960s.

Macksville was named after two families (the McKays and McNallys) who helped establish the town in the 1870s.
