1. We'll start in sunny Queensland, my 'adopted' state, and we're about 640km north of Brisbane in the 'Beef Cattle Capital of Australia'. Where are we?

Answer: Rockhampton

'Rocky' as it's known, is the capital of Central Queensland's Capricorn Region, with some of the grandest, old architectural (old by Australian standards) buildings in Queensland. Rockhampton sits on the tree lined banks of the lazy Fitzroy River discovered in 1853, and 'Rocket' Rod Laver, one of the greatest tennis players ever, was born in Rockhampton.
2. Down south to New South Wales and we're about 35km south of Sydney in the oldest area of its type in Australia. Where are we?

Answer: Royal National Park

Covering nearly 15,000 hectares and established in 1879 the 'Royal National Park' was the first in Australia and the second only in the world (Yellowstone in the USA was the first). The National Park became the Royal National Park after Queen Elizabeth II visited Wollongong in 1954. I grew up not far from the 'Royal' and from the beaches of Wattamolla and Garie to the waters of the Hacking River it is a great natural place to visit!

Raymond Terrace was named after Lieutenant Raymond who explored the area around 1812 and, Raymond Terrace was the first place in Australia to produce and also export wine.

Ravenshoe, at over 910m above sea-level, is the 'highest' town in Queensland. In 1881 the area was named Cedar Creek and the timber industry that developed supported the area for seventy years. In 1987 the area was World Heritage listed. The widest waterfall in Australia is near Ravenshoe - Little Millstream Falls.

Answer: Renmark

Renmark is the oldest settlement on the Murray River and was founded in 1887. The area is famous for its proliferation of fruit crops.

Answer: Redland Bay

The Aboriginal name for Redland Bay was Talwalpin and with the first land grant made in 1865 the settlers tried to grow cotton, but it was not successful and was replaced by sugar cane. Redland Bay is where the ferry services depart for Macleay, Lamb, Russell and Karragarra Islands.

Richmond is about 26km north east of Hobart. Situated on the Coal River with the oldest bridge in Australia that is still in use, the Richmond Bridge. This bridge was built by convicts in 1825 and it is purportedly haunted!

Ross River, settled in 1876, is 87km east of Alice Springs on the Ross Highway. Ross River was named after John Ross, an explorer sent to find a route for the Overland Telegraph.

Answer: Robe

Robe is on Guichen Bay and is a holiday resort. Discovered in 1802, the town was named after Governor Robe, South Australia's most unpopular Governor!

Answer: Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island was named by Dutch sailors who had landed there from 1658 on. The name came from the 'rats' (quokkas, a type of small wallaby) that the sailors saw on the island. In English it is Rat's Nest Island!
