Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the word "Musquodoboit," which is the name of an area outside Halifax, which "O" is not silent?

Answer: the second one

It's about a forty-five minute drive from the province's capital, and the name is a from a Mi'kmaq term, Mooksudoboogwek, which means "rolling out in foam or suddenly widening out after a narrow entrance at its mouth." The Musquodoboit River fits that description just right!
2. Which of the following names is a place in Nova Scotia?

Answer: Ecum Secum

That one might have been a little unfair. For the three wrong answers, I just changed around a few of the letters in actual places. Takanagush = Tatamagouche, Chezelcoot = Chezzetcook and Whylocomach = Whycocomagh. Ecum Secum, the correct response, is a tiny little community on the East Coast. The name is derived from the Mi'kmaq language and means "Red House."
3. What is the name of a town in Nova Scotia famous for being exactly halfway between the North Pole and the Equator?

Answer: Stewiacke

Stewiacke is also known for having a big statue of a mastodon, viewable from the highway! Sydney is in Cape Breton, and is the second largest city in Nova Scotia. Pictou is a town on the North Shore, and Peggy's Cove is a beautiful little fishing village often called "The most photographed fishing village in the World!"
4. What does Nova Scotia have that nowhere else in Canada has?

Answer: A tidal power plant

New Brunswick and P.E.I. have a lot of Acadian Heritage as well, I completely made up the statue thing, and it's Newfoundland, not Nova Scotia, that has bakeapples, also known as "cloudberries."
5. In what year did Halifax get Canada's first decorated English Christmas tree?

Answer: 1846

The VERY first Christmas tree in the world was when Martin Luther, a protestant reformer, was awed by the stars shining through the evergreens near his home. That evening, he decided to try to recapture the scene for his family by putting candles on a spruce.
6. There are more speakers of what language in Nova Scotia than there are in what country where that language originated?

Answer: Gaelic, Scotland

Nova Scotia even has a Gaelic College! It's called St. Ann's.
7. What is Cheticamp sometimes known as?

Answer: Rug-Hooking capital of the World

Cheticamp is on the Western coast of Cape Breton, at the start of the famous Cabot Trail. I think that Rug-Hooking is a REALLY weird thing to have a whole town dedicated to, don't you?. The Blueberry Capital of Canada is Oxford, also in Nova Scotia. I completely made up "Moosetown," although there is a "Moose Jaw" in Saskatchewan.
8. In 2007 how many automated lighthouses is my beloved Nova Scotia home to?

Answer: 59

Weird, isn't it? Nova Scotia is also home to Sambro Lighthouse, the oldest operating lighthouse in North America.
9. What is Nova Scotia's official mineral?

Answer: Stilbite

Stilbite is abundant in the volcanic rocks of Iceland, the Faroe Islands, the Isle of Skye, and of course Nova Scotia!
10. On what date did Nova Scotia decide to switch from driving on the left-hand side of the road to driving on the right-hand side of the road?

Answer: April 15, 1923

In some places in Nova Scotia, 1923 is still known as The Year of Free Beef because the price of beef dropped a great deal! Oxen which had been trained to keep to the left could not be retrained - oxen are famously stupid - and many teamsters had to replace their oxen with new ones trained to keep to the right. The displaced oxen were sent to slaughter.
