Ayers Rock is a large rock monolith located in the Northern Territory in central Australia. It was given that name in 1873 by the surveyor William Gosse, in honour of Sir William Ayers, who was Chief Secretary of South Australia at the time. This location is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered sacred by the Aboriginal tribes in the area, who have been calling it "Uluru" for rather longer.
