Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Salt Sea is also known by what other name?

Answer: The Dead Sea

This body of water has several names; it was also called it the 'sea of Arabah' in the Bible (Joshua 12:3). The root word, arab, means to criss-cross, such as when weaving, and 'arabah' evokes the idea of a cluster of roots, and is generally applied to a region such as a plain or a desert.
2. What river, not far from the Dead Sea in the Ein Gedi Nature Reserve, shares its name with a Biblical patriarch?

Answer: Nahal David (David River)

The Nahal David is about 11 km in length and is situated in an area that offers scenic views. It is a popular hiking region and is rated as difficult for this activity. However, wandering along these paths is worth it; on the way to the watering hole there are many local fauna that can be seen, including ibex and nutria.
3. In the southern part of Jerusalem, Ein Namer is a stream that passes through the local canyons. What does 'Ein Namer' mean?

Answer: Leopard Headspring

In the Judean desert, descending to the Dead Sea, there is a wadi (valley) and canyon called the Tze'elim Stream; in the middle of this canyon is the headspring called Ein Namer. The local desert leopards for which the springs are named and which once inhabited the Judean desert used this rare water source. Very few are thought to still inhabit the area.
4. The Spring of Harod, a watering hole rising in a cave on the slope of Mt Gilboa, is also known by what alternative name?

Answer: Gideon's Fountain

This cave from which this spring rises is also known as Gideon's Cave. In the defeat of Midian, Gideon and his army camped by the spring (nahal) of Harod and the camp of the Midianites was to the North, beside the hill of Moreh. God told Gideon to allow anyone in his army who was afraid to go home and 22,000 men left; but there were still 10,000 left.

After some more whittling away of the numbers there were 300 left, and it was these soldiers who defeated the Midianites. The spring is on the southern border of the Jezreel Valley.
5. About 140km north of the Dead Sea, is the Sea of Tiberius; but what better-known alternative name is given to it?

Answer: Sea of Galilee

The Sea of Galilee has many names in the Bible; its Old Testament name was Sea of Chinnereth, and later it was called the Lake of Gennesaret. The lake, with a surface area of around 166 square km, is located in the great depression of the Jordan - part of the East African Rift System. It is around 21km long (north - south) and 11km wide.
6. 75 km south of Be'er Sheba, what city of ancient Palestine was probably also part of the southern border of Israel?

Answer: Kadesh Barnea

The location is about eleven day's walk from Mt Horeb. As a series of springs, it was very important in the history of the area, as it allowed for the refreshment of travellers, along with the benefit of shelter in the nearby caves. The names 'En-Mishpat' (spring of judgment) and 'Waters of Meribah' (strife) are also attributed to it.

The area is 25 km south of Niẓẓanah (or Nitzanei), found in the western Negev desert - the Biblical wilderness of Zin - in Israel. It was the site of the death and burial of Moses' sister, Miriam, and the place recorded in Numbers 20 where Moses struck the rock to bring forth water.
7. Gan Hashlosh is renowned for its pools whose waters are a constant 28 degrees C, are fed by what river?

Answer: Nahal Amal (Amal River)

An attractive and popular promenade, this public park encompasses several naturally heated pools and a waterfall, along with pathways, fishing docks and observation points, and stunning views of Mt Gilboa. Visitors to the park can swim in the water and relax on the banks of the river, as well as taking hikes along paths.
8. What man-made body of water, in which rainwater is collected and stored for agricultural use, is connected by road to nearby Jish?

Answer: Dalton Lake

Jish is a local council in Upper Galilee, located on the north eastern slopes of Mount Meron, 13 kilometres north of Safed, in Israel's Northern District. There have been numerous archaeological finds there, including several ancient burial caves; the location is the traditional burial place of the prophet Joel.
9. What biblical river was also called Aulon by the Greeks? Baptisms are still held there!

Answer: Jordan River

The Jordan river rises on the slopes of Mount Hermon, on the border between Syria and Lebanon. It flows southward into the Hula Valley, then to the Sea of Galilee. It flows finally into the Dead Sea. Sacred to a number of religions, there are still Christian baptisms conducted there regularly.
10. Called throughout history by several names: Mare Nostrum, the Sea of the Philistines, the Western Sea and the Great Sea - by what name do we know the 'superhighway' of ancient transport?

Answer: The Mediterranean Sea

The Mediterranean Sea is located between Southern Europe and North Africa, and its name is derived from the Latin word 'mediterraneus' which means 'in the middle of land'. Among the ancient civilizations that lived along the Mediterranean are the Phoenicians; the Philistines occupied the area around the southern coast of Canaan.
