Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Red Crew finds itself deep in America's southeast preparing to use the Interstates to find its way back home. We thought we were near Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. However, we hadn't made it quite that far north and are in the Sunshine State's largest city. Where are we?

Answer: Jacksonville, FL

Jacksonville, FL is located in the far northeast of the state and by population is, by far, Florida's largest city. It is not to be confused with the US Marine Corps training grounds at Camp Lejeune, on the coast near Jacksonville, NC.

Phoenix Rising teammate and Red Crew member mike32768 submitted this question as part of the team's 2022 World Tour but as he was leaving Florida at the peak of hurricane season, he felt a bit of a tropical depression.
2. Phoenix Rising's Red Crew has made a pitstop in Norfolk - home of the world's largest naval station. Where exactly are we?

Answer: Virginia

Norfolk, VA is home to Naval Station Norfolk which is the world's largest. It is around the Chesapeake Bay, Newport News and Virginia Beach. Norfolk, MA is a small town on the outskirts of Boston.

This question was floated by Phoenix Rising teammate and Red Crew member jaknginger as part of the team's 2022 World Tour. Who can say where our Red Crew will end up next?
3. Nicknamed "Charm City," this was the site of the hospital that treated Henrietta Lacks, whose tissue formed the first immortalized human cell line. Was it Baltimore, Ohio or Baltimore, Maryland?

Answer: Baltimore, MD

The book "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" tells the tale of HeLa cells created from tissue biopsied during Henrietta's treatment for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Baltimore, MD is also the site where the "Star Spangled Banner" was penned by Francis Scott Key, who was inspired by the view of the flag flying over Fort McHenry during a battle in the War of 1812. Baltimore, OH is a small village near Columbus, not to be confused with North Baltimore, OH, which is closer to Toledo.

As part of the team's 2022 World Tour, this question was harvested by Phoenix Rising teammate and Red Crew member pusdoc, who remembers that there is a second medical school in Baltimore.
4. Springfield, Massachusetts is one of many so-named places. Which of the following statements is true about Springfield, MA?

Answer: It is the first settled Springfield in the US

Springfield MA, on the Connecticut River, about 90 miles west of Boston on the I-90 was first settled in 1636 making it the first of all 34 places called Springfield in the US. (There are five in Wisconsin alone!) It is the largest metropolitan area named Springfield though the cities with the same name in Illinois and Missouri have populations well in excess of 100000 people. The latter two were connected by Route 66 either side of St Louis, with Springfield, IL being the capital of Illinois.

This question was submitted by Phoenix Rising teammate and Red Crew member 1nn1 as part of the team's 2022 World Tour, who had a very pleasant lunch in Springfield, MA as he drove down I-91 from Shelburne Falls, MA to New Haven, CT.
5. As we travel along I-90 westward towards Niagara Falls, we come upon Utica, a city known in its heyday as "Sin City" due to its powerful underworld influence. Which state are we in now?

Answer: New York

I-90 is known as the NY State Thruway as it meanders along between Albany and Buffalo, NY. Part of the so-called Rust Belt, Utica, NY in the early-to-mid 1900s was fairly notorious for its mob-backed political corruption. Its population has declined from a high of 100000 in the 1950s to the current (as of 2020) of 65000. Utica, IN, however, is much smaller with a population under 1000.

This question was scraped together and ironed out by Phoenix Rising teammate and Red Crew member mike32768 as part of the team's 2022 World Tour.
6. The term Miami found in the names of the University of Miami in Southeast Florida and Miami University in Southwest Ohio are both derived from Native American people that lived in the areas.

Answer: True

The University of Miami located in Coral Gables, Florida was established in 1925. Its name is derived from the Mayaimi people who lived in the area around Lake Okeechobee beginning in the 17th century. Miami University located in Oxford, Ohio was established in 1809. Its name is derived from the Miami people who established sites in Wisconsin, OH and Indiana from the 1600s to the 1800s.

This question was crammed into the quiz by Phoenix Rising teammate and Red Crew member Triviaballer as part of the team's 2022 World Tour.
7. What town shares its name with the home of Vanderbilt University and is the site of Brown County Art Colony and the original home of the John Dillinger Museum?

Answer: Nashville, Indiana

Nashville, Indiana is the county seat of Brown County and is the only incorporated town in the county. Settlement of the area that became Nashville, IN began in 1809 after the Treaty of Fort Wayne. A popular site in Nashville, IN was the John Dillinger Museum which was opened in 1975 and closed in 2017. The museum featured wax exhibits of Dillinger and other outlaws as well as memorabilia from the Depression era. In 2015 a John Dillinger Museum was opened in Hammond, IN precipitating the close of the location in Nashville, IN.

The most populous Nashville in the United States is the city of Nashville in the state of Tennessee. Nashville is the state's capital and the site of Vanderbilt University, The Parthenon and the Hermitage.

This question was nashed into the quiz by Phoenix Rising teammate and Red Crew member Triviaballer as part of the team's 2022 World Tour.
8. We arrive in Dallas and kick off the dust as we go in search of the country's tallest indoor Christmas tree. But what's this? There is a Dallas in Georgia and a Dallas in Texas. Which one do we need, to find the Galleria Dallas?

Answer: Texas

The Galleria Dallas is a large shopping mall which opened in 1982. It boasts over 200 shops, an ice skating rink and a hotel. The Christmas tree stands at 95 feet tall, is topped by a 10-foot star and is situated in the middle of the ice skating rink. The tree was first assembled in 1984, and requires a team of 50 workers to assemble.

Phoenix Rising Red Team member leith90, who decorated this question, is glad her tree is only 6 feet tall.
9. We visited two places called Phoenix on our route home: Phoenix, Arizona and Phoenix, Oregon, but which one was the location of Taliesin West, winter home of architect Frank Lloyd Wright?

Answer: Arizona

In another interesting duplication of names; Taliesin West was named after Taliesin, Wisconsin, which was Wright's other home. He lived here in the Phoenix Metropolitan area from 1937 to 1959. An attractive area to architects due to its desert climate, it apparently encourages unconventional design. Phoenix, Oregon is situated in Jackson County and in contrast experiences dry, hot summers and cool wet winters.

Red Team member smpdit gracefully fluttered this into the Phoenix Rising's Global Tour 2022
10. Castle Rock Entertainment is a film and television company. Its name is inspired by which fictional city?

Answer: Castle Rock, Maine

Red Team visited Castle Rock, WA on the Phoenix Rising Global Tour, but it wasn't from where Castle Rock Entertainment got its name. The fictional 'Castle Rock in Maine', used by Stephen King in many of his novels inspired the moniker of the film company. Stephen King himself lifted his city from William Golding's 'Lord of the Flies'. There are numerous Castle Rocks in the US. Some are just rock formations with no cities attached.

Red Crew member, smpdit built this question complete with battlements and crenellations into this quiz as part of the team's 2022 World Tour.
