Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Ah, yes!", said his teacher looking up from the school report, "He's got a good ______ ahead of him."

Answer: Korea

Turkey and Chile would fit however the teacher is more likely to be discussing the boy's career prospects rather than what he is having for his next meal.

Korea is a territory currently split into North Korea and South Korea, with China, Russia and Japan as neighbours. Since the Korean War in 1950, South Korea has joined the ranks of the developed world, having become a major exporting country. North Korea in marked contrast is one of the world's most insular and militarised societies. Perhaps unfortunately, it also has a nuclear weapons programme.
2. "_____ open this? I am really struggling with it."

Answer: Kenya

'Can ya' is the missing phrase. Kenya is a country in the east of Africa straddling the equator and bordering the Indian Ocean. It has one of Africa's highest mountains within its borders, namely Mount Kenya. In fact, the country takes its name from the mountain.
3. "Officer! Arrest that man! _______ me." What is the missing country?

Answer: Egypt

The missing phrase was "'e gypped" or "'e gipped". 'Gypped' or 'gipped' means 'swindled' or 'cheated', and 'e being an abbreviated form of 'He'. The word has a bit of a racist history as it is a stereotyping of the Romany race.

Egypt can boast having the largest city on the African continent as well as in the Arab world. Cairo, Egypt's capital had over 9 million inhabitants in 2011. It was at one time thought that gypsies originated in Egypt however genetically they have been traced to the Indian subcontinent.
4. The note to the school from his mother said: "He can't swim today because he's got _______".

Answer: Qatar

Catarrh may accompany a common cold or chest infection. Qatar occupies a small peninsula on the Arabian Peninsula in the Middle East. It sticks out into the Persian Gulf and only has one land border, with Saudi Arabia on the south. It has benefited from having a lot of oil and natural gas and there is a higher population of immigrant workers than residents.

Grease is typically used by long-distance swimmers to help insulate their bodies and so is unlikely to be an acceptable excuse. Nor is having Sam o'er (over). Cyprus sounds a bit like some disease however I have not been able to track it down.
5. "Do you think you can ______ enough evidence to make it stick?", the police sergeant asked. What is the missing country?

Answer: Ghana

Greece had potential: 'to grease' is slang for 'to bribe'. However the word we are looking for is 'garner', which means 'gather' or 'amass' in this context.

Ghana of West Africa is one of the world's top gold producers and had a 2010 population of around 24 million. Like many in Africa, it was at one time colonised. The British were the ones to grant independence in 1957, although the Portuguese were there in the fifteenth century and various others in between. The 'Gold Coast' was the name given to the area by the British because of the gold sourced from there. The name 'Ghana' was adopted on independence, covering the former Gold Coast colony and British Togoland.
6. "Why did she do that? That is not in her nature. ____________?"

Answer: Jamaica

The phrase to fill the gap is 'Ya make her' (Did you make her). 'No way' (Norway) could work but not with a question mark. 'Chilly' (Chile) does not tie in with the first sentence.

Jamaica is a Caribbean island with a history of piracy and sugar production based on slave labour. First claimed for the Spanish by Christopher Columbus, the British conquered the island in 1655 and independence came in 1962.
7. "Did you see the news on TV today? That's defamation! I am going to _____ Rather."

Answer: Sudan

It was actually Dan Rather who sued his former employers in a $70 million breach of contract law suit. He lost. This was after he lost his position as the news anchor and managing editor for CBS Evening News programme in 2005.

Sudan, sometimes known as North Sudan, is the third largest country in Africa. At one time Sudan and South Sudan were part of Egypt. South Sudan, formerly part of Sudan, became an independent state in 2011. The Blue Nile and the White Nile join in Sudan at Khartoum to become the Nile river.
8. He _______ his position for a moment then acted. What country best fits the gap?

Answer: Moldova

'Mulled over' is the missing phrase. To mull over something is to think about it. Moldova lies between Romania and Ukraine and declared itself independent in 1991 following the break-up of the USSR. It has a well-established wine industry and can boast extensive limestone cellaring (running to 250 km). The Milestii Mici collection of wine was recorded in 2005 as the world's largest.
9. She smiled in exasperation at her boyfriend, "You wouldn't understand. _______." What country is she most likely to have in mind?

Answer: Uruguay

The phrase sought is 'You're a guy". Uruguay is a small South American country sandwiched between Argentina and Brazil on the Atlantic coast. Its capital is Montevideo and the population is mostly of European descent and Spanish (with some Italian modifications) is the main language spoken.
10. "No way", he said. "I'm not going there during rush hour with ma cow. Have you been in that kind of traffic before?" Of the four 'countries' appearing in the preceding statement, which one is the gambling den?

Answer: Macau

Macau was a Portuguese trading port for over 400 years, only becoming a colony in 1887. It was handed back to the Chinese in 1999. Its economy is largely dependent on gambling and tourism with most of its visitors coming from mainland China and Hong Kong. The bulk of the Macau government's revenue comes from the gambling industry. Other industries include textiles and banking.

'No way' was Norway, 'rush hour' was Russian, and 'been in' was Benin.
