Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With such hits as "Blue Monday", "True Faith" and "Regret", what is this Brit band called?

Answer: New Order

Formed in 1980 and combining post-punk and electronic dance music, they were an influential band during the 1980s. They are regarded by some as the first alternative dance music group with their style also covering synthpop, post-punk, new wave and dance-rock. With a couple of breaks during the 1990s and 2000s, the individual band members have pursued their own projects before reforming New Order. Other acts band members have been associated with include Joy Division, Electronic, Bad Lieutenant, Peter Hook, The Light, and The Other Two.

The photo is a chadburn, otherwise known as an engine order telegraph, used as a communication device by the bridge on a ship or submarine to order a certain speed from the engine room.
2. In the 1970s, this Brit-based group had hits like "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" and "Beg, Steal or Borrow". What word goes with the New to complete the band's name?

Answer: Seekers

Formed in 1969 following the demise of the Australian band "The Seekers", they went on to represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1972, reaching second place with "Beg,Steal or Borrow". Performing mostly as a five-piece band, there have been 23 band members over the years.

Their hit "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing (in Perfect Harmony)" is actually a reworking of the 1971 Coca-Cola jingle "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke", which appeared in Coca-Cola's award-winning "Hilltop" TV advert.
3. Which apple-connected band produced albums such as the 1974 "Too Much Too Soon"?

Answer: New York Dolls

An American band formed in 1971, they were an early punk rock band who influenced many bands such as the Sex Pistols, Guns 'N Roses and the Smiths. Their first album was the self-titled "New York Dolls", released in 1973. The line-up has changed over the years. A five-piece band, three of the original line-up have died and another 16 have also played in the band (as at 2014).

The apple connection is the nickname for New York.
4. With chart-topping Rhythm and Blues hits like "Candy Girl", "Cool It Now" and "Mr Telephone Man", which word accompanies the "New" in the name of this boys band?

Answer: Edition

A precursor to such boy bands as New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys, this Boston band was formed in 1978. The band gained its break through a talent show in 1982. When they split with the talent show manager, he created a white version of the band and called it New Kids on the Block.
5. A bit more obscure, this group's two biggest hits were "I Will Always Think About You" and "Things I'd Like to Say", both in 1968. From Chicago, they were still active in 2014 wearing period costume (in keeping with the band's name) during performances. What word(s) go with the "New"?

Answer: Colony Six

Producing American soft rock from the mid 1960s, NC6 produced four albums before their demise in 1974. A reunion concert followed in 1988 and another three compilation albums have since appeared. An unusual feature of the band is the colonial-style outfits worn during performances.
6. We are looking for an American progressive bluegrass band with songs like "Callin' Baton Rouge" (which Garth Brooks later took to number two in the US country singles charts in 1994) and "Ain't That Peculiar". What word(s) accompany the New?

Answer: Grass Revival

This group were mould-breakers in that they moved away from the traditional style of presentation at the time (short haircuts and matching outfits) and were also happy to include other music genres in their playlist, for example, music by the Beatles or Jerry Lee Lewis. They released eleven albums in the 1970s and 1980s before their break-up in 1989.
7. With 1980s hits like "The Power of Love" and "Hip to be Square", what person's name goes with the News?

Answer: Huey Lewis

Formed during the 1970s and with most of their top ten singles during the 1980s, Huey Lewis and the News ironically are said to have got their film break in the 1985 film "Back to the Future" (in which hit single "The Power of Love" got them an Oscar nomination) indirectly from suing Ray Parker Jr. over the 1984 film "Ghostbusters" title song.

"Hip to be Square" was intended to be on the soundtrack album for the 2000 film "American Psycho", however it got pulled due to lack of publishing rights and probably a desire not to have the music associated with violence. It is played in the film during the axe murder scene.

The photo shows a picture of a Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter, nicknamed the "Huey", in medical garb. It was at one time designated the HU-1, giving rising to the nickname.
8. The band we are looking for here is an all-male Christian rock band from Australia that's been spreading the 'news' since 1985. With those clues and the photo clue, what is the band's name?

Answer: Newsboys

Initially criticised for lyrics with an emphasis on religious clichés, an image make-over and a more secular style has broadened their appeal and gained them more secular airplay. They were originally called The News but changed their name to avoid clashing with Huey Lewis and The News when they started targeting the US market.

A variety of musicians have played in the band over the years.
9. This British novelty band was formed in 1966 because the song "Winchester Cathedral", sung in British 1920s music hall style by a Rudy Vallée sound-alike with session musicians, proved to be a hit across the Atlantic and a touring band was required. Echoing this style, what was the name of the band?

Answer: The New Vaudeville Band

The American equivalent of British music hall entertainment was vaudeville. The New Vaudeville Band was put together by the song's composer Geoff Stephens. He initially approached the existing and similarly-styled Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, however they turned him down although one Bonzo member jumped ship. Several albums followed with some singles chart success, however they were in effect a one-hit wonder. The band survived until 1988.

Rudy Vallée, perhaps America's first teen idol pop star, was known for his crooning style often sung through a megaphone. This was in the days before electronic microphones. The original "Winchester Cathedral" vocalist (John Carter) used cupped hands to simulate this effect.
10. Another boy band from Boston, Massachusetts, this band enjoyed initial success in the late 1980s and early 1990s with hits like "Please Don't Go Girl", "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" and "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)". What 'new' name did they go by?

Answer: New Kids on the Block

Originally called Nynuk, NKOTB was formed in 1984 by the original manager of New Edition as a white counterpart to them. Their first album (mostly written by the manager) bombed and the second album initially fared no better. Columbia Records were reportedly about to drop them from the record label when a Florida radio station started giving their first single off the second album some airplay. The rest is history as they now rate as one of the biggest-selling bands ever.

They have gone on to form NKOTBSB, being a combination of New Kids on the Block and boy band Backstreet Boys.
